TOY (Thought Of You) Original Song - Shane | NEW MUSIC 2023

TOY by 'Shane' is a song about the progression of feelings from the beginning of a relationship through to its end. The song is written from the perspective of a former lover still harboring feelings for an ex partner who 'had to move on'. The beginning of the song sets the scene - a new relationship where both people are enamoured with eachother's company.
The lyrics in the chorus tell of a feeling of infatuation that hasn't yet progressed to feelings of love; he's not in love (with her) yet but he's 'in love with one day loving you'.
In the second verse their relationship has progressed to the stage where they're spending the night together, but despite his infatuation he momentarily forgot his partner's name, which serves to highlight how obsessed people can be with eachother at the beginning of a relationship, despite knowing the other person for such little time that it's still possible to forget their name.
By the third verse we're transported to two years after the relationship has ended. '2 years I'm counting what I lost out on, 'coz you had to move on'. He says 'that's alright by me (not really)'. It's obvious this isn't true; he's spent the time reminiscing about her, unable to move on - he still does his shopping 'in the same place, hoping we'll meet'.
By the final chorus he admits that he did end up falling in love with her, but it was perhaps unrequited. The song is a confession of love to someone who probably will never hear it.
