I wish I could find the commercial that appeared in a Good Times VHS tape that had Harry James and Betty Grable promoting the '55 De Soto. At the end of the commercial, Graucho Marx pops out of the back seat.
DeSoto had some serious problems, though. The first was spotty quality control. Its cars suffered from leaky windshields and rear windows, weak torsion bars that occasionally broke, splitting upholstery and flaking paint, and other problems.
"This car is low..." Imagine trying to use THAT selling point on a dumbed-down population that has to drive SUV's to feel "safe." SUV: Super Ugly Vehicle. That DeSoto is a really beauty, a visual statement of a great era in life that has faded away and is sorely missed.
He was talking about a 1957 Desoto. The last Desoto came off the lot in 1961, although they disbanded in November of 1960. So yes, Desoto was around 2-3 years later, and of course they still drive them today in car shows!
Who could resist the soothing tones of Groucho Marx?
You Bet Your Life was a likable TV show. DeSotos were certainly under appreciated.
"Just above the lowest"... give that copywriter an award ❤
Desoto...the car of successful doctors, lawyers and insurance agents everywhere!!
I miss DeSoto, Studebaker, Packard, Rambler, Nash, Kaisers, Willy's, and all the really cool cars.
Today we have plastic driving appliances.
Plastic appliances? Are you referring to those disposable Bic lighters on wheels?

So do I.
This is probably my FAV DeSoto/Graucho Marx ad or any sort.
The '57 Chryslers (DeSoto being 1 of 5 divisions) were truly ahead of The pack in styling but suffered from poor build quality

"And don't worry if it starts to get a mind of it's own, and starts driving itself, it's going to avenge you, by killing enemies".
That’s just the Plymouth’s….
DeSoto's BEFORE '55; AWESOME! DeSoto's POST '55, VERY GOOD!

you got that right. its all boring today, i think ill go to the dealer today and buy a new toaster.
Very prescient - cars *were* imitating DeSoto 2-3 years later. Unfortunately, DeSoto wasn't around to see it.

“And tell ‘em Groucho sent ya”
He convinced me.
How you go wrong with Groucho's endorsement?
Keeping the price low implied strong dollar and inflation issues for the almighty consumer. Weird ad but effective as cigar wielding salesman.
Groucho yeah
I would buy ice cream from Groucho even lactose intolerant.
He could sell a pork chop to a jihadi…
That car was built in the year i was born.
very convincing
You're kidding, it was terrible even for the time.
This was terrible even for the time.
DON'T clap at THAT - you fools!
Sure, it's a pretty sweet ride...but watching Groucho shilling for Chrysler is kinda like watching him take a dump.
