I love your groove....... you make it real....Keep going Chez, you are keeping people going playing and enjoying their beautiful instrument rather than hiding their sax in the loft, in the garage or under the bed :-)
Hi Chez I would just like to say I'm so pleased that I've found your site I've been searching for years to find an insight into chord progressions for improvising & your video on the subject is without doubt the best I've seen you also have a great talent for teaching because the way you have broken all the necessary information down into a simple format twinned with an actual demonstration is a masterpiece! Please come and tour the northeast of England & I'll definitely come to one of your concerts! A new fan Chris Adams. Middlesbrough
I watch a lot of wise grey or bald men on CZcams for the technicalities, But your vids make me want to pick up my Sax. Your unique selling point is your inspiring energy (and loose flab words :-). Thank you Your Royal Awkwardness.
This comment just made me laugh out loud on the tube like a crazy lady!! Thanks so much for taking the time to write. It's people like you who make me want to continue making these vids - they're fun but super time consuming. Thanks for supporting the channel and merry xmas you lovely person. Cx
Jonathan Ricketts thanks for taking the time to comment. Means so much to me. Love the sax community on the channel. Thanks for being part of the team jonathan. Cx
Hi Chez, great seeing you having this tips..I'm learning on improvising recently but I'm not really sure which notes to play or to start with. Do you mind to share how you determine which note to be played? :)
hey jimmy, Thanks so much for getting in touch. So glad your using the videos and getting into improv through these. Have you caught my video on How To Find the Key of a song? This may be helpful; czcams.com/video/52XwCJJfoUc/video.html Also, my boring video on scales is kind of vital too; czcams.com/video/SbW6PuTrLNA/video.html Hope this helps buddy. Let me know how you get on. Cx
Hey..yea i did watched your videos...they are really helpful...thank you so much! you are superb! I am the kind of people who plays with music...I play pops mostly..so i was thinking like what you said, i would probably start learning on improvising.. :)
Ha ha! Thanks for this hun. Yep, there are always going to be haters on youtube. I'm cool with it. Little bit of passive aggressiveness never hurt anyone ;-) Thanks for supporting the channel honey. Means a lot. Cx
chez taylor ..😍😍😍i've been plying alto sax for 8 years and learn from self study and now thanks for social media thanks to you ..but now im struggling to find 1920s for gatsby music can you pm me some of your knowledge to that music.. big thank you we have event this coming friday for gatsby party
Thanks for getting in touch Robert. I've touched on jazz and blue notes in my improv series but there's definitely a lot more to say so will build on this over the coming months. Meanwhile, here's a playlist with all my tips so far in improv which you may find useful; czcams.com/video/O1_WOAa2M1A/video.html
Hi chez, Your CZcams videos are boss thanks. In brief I've been playing alto sax for 4years, love the deep house sax tunes and have now started to try improvising with backing tracks, but finding it hard to find good tracks. Do you have any tips? Thanks and merry Xmas.
Thanks for your message and for supporting the channel. Do you have spotify? I find a lot of my material by the 'discover weekly' playlist it automatically makes for me. I also follow several facebook friends who have similar tastes and musical interests and often steal tunes off their 'recently listened to' playlists. Regarding edited backing tracks (ie without sax) mine are customised for me by a DJ friend so worth making nice with a few DJs and see if any of them fancy a creative project for you! Hope this helps and thanks again for getting in touch. Cx
Hi Chez First of all thanks for taking the time to make these great vids, it has inspired me to get my tenor out and give it another lash😄👍 Will these notes your using in this video work with my tenor?
Paul Finney think there should be notes down there for tenor as well honey. Hope you have fun with the video & thanks for getting in touch. Really glad to hear you're back in team saxophone again!!
I'd love to but I think it would just be too time consuming for me darling. Hope the videos are still useful for you though and thanks for supporting the channel. Is english your 1st language? I have been considering subtitles for my videos. Would this be useful for you? Cx
Hi , at first I thought.... This lady is as mad as a box of frogs ! lol. But I stuck with you and I'm glad I did. I love Funk/ Blues etc. Keep it coming, love your style. Be lucky ! Tony.
My issue is not knowing if the notes sound right I'm uber beginner and there seems to be a ton of honking Involved or what doesnt sound like the notes I've watched your embouchure video and still cant seem to get it right. Its really disconcerting
Hey chez love your videos ,thank you xx ... I'm having a little trouble with the reed closing especially when I try get loud , I'm playing a 6* metal otto link and play a carbon fibre reed m/h practicing and vandoran V16 size 3 performing , do you think I should try a bigger opening ? I've asked some of my sax friends and I'm not really getting a straight answer , thanks your are a superstar x
Hmm...sound like you have a tight embouchure. A harder reed would certainly help. Have you tried a 3.5? V16 do come up quite soft so even a vandorin traditional 3 might be the ticket for you. You may find this article useful; athomemusicacademy.wordpress.com/2012/02/24/a-short-explanation-of-woodwind-reed-varieties-and-strengths/ Also, worth trying a more "subtone" embouchure. Have you watched my video on this? czcams.com/video/e5YPda8GVUI/video.html
Lawrence Fairbairn it does indeed! You may want to watch my tutorial on "finding the key" & also my tutorial on "scales". So glad you're enjoying the videos. Thanks for supporting the channel! Cx
Antony Dann I do swap between 8ves yes. This gives you a wider range of notes to play with. I recommend 'smooth voice leading' though - in other words don't just jump between 8ves, make sure you lead by scale. I advise you begin with just trying lower register first to get a good sense of rhythm & style. Then play around with adding the 2nd 8ve. Hope that's helpful. Cx
Uciel Salerno Corral hey buddy! Thanks so much for getting in touch. So excited to have viewers from overseas. I've been thinking about adding subtitles to my videos. Do you find them easy to follow in English? Cx
Chez Taylor. Sax I can follow the videos because your English is very clear, but I think I'm not the only one from Latin America. We can help you with the subtitles if you want :D
Uciel Salerno Corral that sounds great! I'm entirely up to my neck in it in the lead up to Christmas but will put it on the New Years list to read up on CZcams subtitling & see where we go from there. Thanks son much! Cx
There is one effect that i can't do on demand but when it happens i love it. say you play a d without the register key and you play both high and low at the same time. is there a word for that effect?
chris evans ooh. It's a harmonic. Nice effect. If you watch my video on split notes this will help train this up to become more reliable for you. Thanks for commenting honey. Cx
lalo muro that basically makes you a beginner. Start by charting out the chord changes for the song you're working on, and then use the notes in those keys.
Alrukitaf it's in my music room which I. Use for recording. All thick sound proof double glazing and acoustic flooring, plus sound absorbers on most of the walls. It's so the sound you get is intentionally unprocessed & not all at disguised & enhanced. Just me & a camera. No frills for lessons. Do check out my promo vids though if your interested to hear how I sound by comparison after edits. Cx
Great lesson. Your other video for the sax line that you improvise over should be warning incredibly awesome. Do you have a tattoo on your wrist and did you get a haircut?
I had a fringe cut and am already trying to grow it out! It's constantly in my eyes and most irritating indeed. Ha ha! The wrist pattern is a henna tattoo I got at an indian wedding I played at recently. I do have several other much longer term tattoos though ;-) #misspentyouth! Cx

Chez, what made you select those 5 notes.. it doesn't appear to be a pentatonic scale...
