my experience getting off birth control pills after 10 years: mood, periods, and acne

  • I got off of birth control in October 2021 after I was on it for 10 years. I was prescribed the pill for my acne at 15 years old and decided to get off of it last year. This is my personal experience. Not medical advice, no shaming anyone on it. I think every person should make informed choices and no one should tell you what you should and should not do.

I’m 36 now and have been on birth control 3-4 times since 21. Main reason to go on the birth control was to prevent pregnancy. I was on it briefly between October - December 2022 and i can tell you there were major differences in my personality and mood. I felt like a different person when I was on the pill, I became very quiet, depressed, negative and low on energy. But when I went off it, I was always smiling, laughing, feeling optimistic, more energetic, eager, started running and felt more confident. The pill took my confidence away and my masculine side and I didn’t like it. 😮

Bro, being confident, happy, and optimistic is not "masculine". Bro, I can't with people who live their lives within the gender binary. Everything is "masculine" "feminine", and it's annoying.

I appreciate your honesty in this video! I was in a similar case of being on it for years and getting a pretty severe health scare and having a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in your lungs) as a cause of the pill I was on. I wasn’t properly warned about these effects either and was prescribed it pretty young but hearing about other women’s experiences makes me feel so heard! I wish you the best of luck with the transition off the pill!

Thank you Natalie for sharing! I’ve heard a lot of perspectives on this topic, many that haven’t been very humble and I have to say this is the most refreshing, honest and nonjudgmental one I’ve seen ❤️ there is truly so much beauty in being more in tune with our bodies and being able to make more informed decisions!

Thank you for sharing your experience Natalie ❤️ I also had a similar experience where I was put on birth control at a young age and wasn’t properly educated on what it does and how it affects our bodies. I definitely feel like birth control was almost seen as the “magic” fix for everything growing up (acne, cramping etc.) instead of addressing the root cause of these issues.

I suffer from anxiety and I decided I want to see if this could be stemming from the pill. Well, here I am now, years later, no periods, and STILL anemic. My skin has gotten better, but with all the possible negative side effects such as higher risk for getting a stroke, it can affect mental health etc, I'm leaning more towards getting off birth control and see how my body reacts now.

I started birth control two years ago when I was 25 and now I am 27. The reason I started was because I was dating someone, and we didn't want any risk of pregnancy. My periods before birth control, I feel blessed they were not horrible, but not fun either I didn't have heavy flows the only thing that I had was a lot of lower back pain and maybe some cramping. My drive before and even now on birth control was never really crazy high so I don't think that has changed much since being on it. However, since that relationship I feel so weird being on birth control because I am not active as of right now and it just seems weird I am putting synthetic hormones in my body when it is not necessary. Maybe this is weird to say but apart of me misses having a period because that is something normal a woman experiences and I feel weird not having one at all. I have been thinking of getting off it because of that reason and I am glad you told your story it really helped me get some insight and look more into possibly getting off thank you

Thank you for sharing. I got on birth control at the age of 13... which is so mindblowing. It was due to very heavy bleeding and bleeding for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. The pill did regulate my period and lessen the bleeding. I went off birth control around age 28 to try and get pregnant. I could not get pregnant, which I believe had more to do with my ex husband, but either way, when we separated i went back on birth control for 2 years and just came off about a month ago. I know I have awhile to completely detox and reset, but I started feeling very different pretty quickly. I absolutely felt like a zombie and feel more myself now. Both times i went off the pill in my life it has caused my emotions to be a roller-coaster for awhile. I also lost hair while on the pill and hoping to regain some of it now... its insane the # and variety of side effects you can have with birth control. I dont ever want to be on it again. Its mind altering and changes your personality

I was on birth control for a year and it made me emotionally unstable, I felt depressed a lot. On edge a lot. I gained a little bit if weight, which I didn’t really mind because I was previously underweight. It didn’t really help keep my periods regular often I experienced break through bleeding or spotting throughout the month. It did make me have a lighter flow. But I also didn’t like messing with my hormones by taking it. So I got off it for a year. Now I need to get back on it, but I’m not sure I wanna go back on the pill. I recently got off birth control ( pill form) after being on it for 9 years. I’m two months off and it has made me realize how bad I was actually feeling on it, depressed, moody, anxiety. I can’t speak for the acne issue since I never suffered with acne problems so coming off the pill did nothing to me skin wise. My periods are like a brand new experience, they HURT lol and are “longer” I went from what it was barely a period for two days to a full 4-5 day period , the cramps are intense let me tell you but not severe or Anythjng, just a new feeling. I got off when I finally reached the week of my period on my pack and then never took it again. My mood has IMPROVED TREMENDOUSLY. I’m 29 now and it’s like relearning everything about my body, hormones and mood. Weight wise? I didn’t gain on the pill and I’m not sure if I gained off, I haven’t weighed myself but I’m sure I have but either way I think I look great.

The only good thing about it is that it clears up your skin and keeps you from getting pregnant but it can make you feel suicidal and crazy

Birthcontrol was definitely a mood stabilizer for me I totally get the robot feeling and feeling more like myself and feeling deeper however, I like the feeling more like me but I’ve become a lot more reactive to things and situations and makes me feel a little out of control and I’m unsure of how to handle it. 10:34

I’ve been on it since I was 12.. I’m 21, I am terrified to get off of it. I read like you might not be attractive to your partner and i’ve been with him since 16. I haven’t had a period since I was 12. Im scared for a period and cramps because I’ve had such bad cramps in the past.

I don’t think your attractiveness to your partner changes, but your attraction towards them might. Because your hormone levels will change and we often become attracted to our partners because we like the pheromones they give off. That’s what I heard somewhere anyway. But you can give it a try and see if it affects you in that way. You can always go back on it. Not sure about the cramps though, you may want to discuss that with your ob gyn. For me it was mostly a better experience off it, but I’m now needing to look for an alternative.

update: right after I wrote this comment I got off of it. 3 months later I still love my partner. I’m actually 10x more attractive to him and see how he cares for me. My doctor told me it could take up to a year to get my period I got it 2 weeks after getting off of it. Cramps are bad, but they run in my family and drinking lots of water has helped. Overall, I feel like myself more off of it than on it.

I was 13 or 14 when I was put on it, and I regret it so much because there could've been other ways, but my Dr didn't even try to find another way. I was too young and shouldn't have been allowed on it til I was 18 and have seen a woman Dr and not just a primary/ped.

I was put on BC at age 12. I developed anxiety and dissociation at age 13. I am 21 now and every gyn told me it was not related and the pill has basically no side effects and I should keep taking it forever (cause I don't want kids). I have decided to FINALLY get off it. No idea what's gonna happen, I haven't had a real period in 9 years. I don't know my body at all. It's really sad and a little frightening, but overall I am really excited even if it will be a long bumpy road ahead

I'm a teenager now and i think i might be going on birth control to control my acne as a temporary " bandaid" so i dont waste these years feeling constantly insecure. I'm planning on stopping , maybe, when i get to college and can control my diet better to balance out my hormones naturally

I legit thought I was going crazy when I thought the pill was causing my hair to fall out. Tons of shedding for the whole 8 months I was on it. Went off a few weeks ago and only a few strands fall out in the shower now vs 100s

You are a doctor's client. You're their customer. They prescribe drugs based on the claimed effects by the creators and patent owners of said drug. This is huge business. Doctors do not even understand how most drugs function within our bodies, they simply know some of the effects (but not most of the effects), and how much money they'll make. Do not blindly listen to your doctor. They are most useful to go to for life-threatening or disfiguring traumatic injuries, not for wholistic health or for habitual advice.

i got on birth control at 16 to regulate my periods, treat acne and mainly prevent pregnancy. was on it for just about 5 years it did wonders in regulating my periods and preventing pregnancy but made my acne worse and made me gain a bunch of weight :( i stopped june 2021 and never looked back. my period stopped for about 4 months, then i had it for a week and a half every month, and it's now semi normal and on a schedule (sort of). my period is about the same heaviness and i have since lost some weight and it generally made me feel better (clear head and no headaches, which is something i didn't realize i suffered with until i stopped my birth control). i am now not on any form of birth control and use protection when having sex so i am still protecting myself, but it's obviously different for every single person and depends on what you are looking to get out of your birth control and what is more important to you!! plus there are tons of different pills or forms of birth control to try out if you have access, but it's not for everyone.

oral birth control reduces the risk of ovarian cancer SIGNIFICANTLY. The more time you've been on it, the lower your risk is, so congratulations! I have been on birth control for over 10 years (originally prescribed for acne), and have gone off for short periods to see how it felt. i'm not thrilled with some of the side effects. It's been helpful for me to remember that pregnancy (!!!) is far riskier than oral birth control and it's side effects. so even though birth control side effects can be difficult, oral birth control does amazing work.

@@npineapple3077 that’s good to know. Looks like the risk of breast cancer increases by very little. It is clear that the risks associated with pregnancy are greater than the risks associated with birth control. I just think this should be included in conversations about birth control, because so many women are scared of it but don’t sufficiently understand the risks of pregnancy. Birth control has saved a lot of lives. Risk of cervical cancer does decrease once people stop taking it, and risk of cervical cancer in young people taking it is low. I agree that we should have something better.
