  • Hammer Walking Cane - Birthday gift for my Dad. My Dad and Grandfather were instrumental in teaching me how to make things. There weren't any video game systems back then, so I found ways to pass the time and be creative. This hammer cane represents my Dad's desire to build and make things. I figured the hammer aspect was a good tribute for his skills in teaching me. Thanks Dad.

    I think the comment got deleted...but, someone asked why I made this in 2 sections? The reason is that my lathe is only 18 inches wide, so in order to make the necessary length, I had to piece together 2 sections. Thanks.

      Yes, the middle connection was not my original plan, but the 1st idea didn't work out, so I went with the dowel. When I made this, I never thought about using it as a defensive weapon. It was meant to be a novelty gift for my Dad.

      Words getting out. Vid was great, have you seen some of the crap here on youtube? I check out a lot of firearm related stuff here and too much is borderline dangerous! Your stuff is easy to watch and understand, please don't try and go 'professional' with the footage, keep it 'home style'!

      Well technically that's what I did... but I did make the cane in my case. But thank you for the appreciation, it was some work!

    Nice work, however I have several comments... First your choice in making it a 2 piece stick that is only held with a wood dowel looks like a mistake. If you had to make it a two piece, then a deep hole with a steel rod would have worked better. One hit at the union joint with a tree trunk will snap that clean.. Second, the tenon for the hammer joint was too small when you can easily push it down... You should make it snug so that you can hammer the hammer head down slowly with a piece of wood in between.... Also, you cannot expect paint (especially on smooth stainless steel, with no primer) to stick to the hammer head. That is a high friction area, where the paint will get rubbed off on the first hike... I love your woodworking, however...

      I agree with your critique, although this was meant for very light "cane" use, not for use as a hammer. The connection was definitely bad, My original plan was to use threaded metal posts, but that didn't work out, so I had to use a dowel and glue in a pinch. Surprisingly the paint has held up rather well. But it was made more for novelty use than actual functionality. He shows it off more than he actually uses it. It was originally made to be a tribute to my Dad for teaching me how to make things when I was younger. Thank you for appreciating my attempt.

    Excuse me while I steal your idea. It's way to good to pass up. That's a beautiful cane. I use one and it;s always better to hear "Wow, cool cane" than "sorry you need the help"

      By all means! Please share the idea with others...that's what it's all about sharing ideas to help others be creative! I really appreciate the kind words too! It has been great to get such a positive response on this project.

    Nice work, but that style of hammer might prohibit him from entering certain places. His first reaction was "Hammer" not cane.

      @Maker956  Před 4 lety +1

      Ya, probably, but he doesn't use a cane often, it was more of a novelty item for him, a way of me saying thanks to him for teaching me how to make things when I was a kid.
