- Hammer Walking Cane - Birthday gift for my Dad. My Dad and Grandfather were instrumental in teaching me how to make things. There weren't any video game systems back then, so I found ways to pass the time and be creative. This hammer cane represents my Dad's desire to build and make things. I figured the hammer aspect was a good tribute for his skills in teaching me. Thanks Dad.

sir, watching you make that cane for your dad shows us how much you love him. and thank you for showing us a few ideas for making our own dads a little affection of appreciation. you don't get one like from me, you get one-thousand!
Wow, thanks for the kind words. It's nice to read encouraging and appreciative words for the projects I attempt.
A wonderful piece of work and your father looked really pleased. The music was fantastic too.
Thanks, it's good to know others liked this one.
Such a beautiful gift! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, for your kind words!
I think you dad is going to get a lot of use out of that great work young man just great. . Happy trails
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words!
Love the ZZ Tops...The cane fits the sharp dressed man perfect!
Thanks, I thought the song fit too, that is one reason I chose to share it with this project.
I think the comment got deleted...but, someone asked why I made this in 2 sections? The reason is that my lathe is only 18 inches wide, so in order to make the necessary length, I had to piece together 2 sections. Thanks.
was going to be my question, nice build
Just take the time and work it down by hand... Spitting it in two pieces creates a weakness..
I agree, I just really wanted to play with the lathe.
Maker956 love them bearded Brothers of the Blues.
Hello, do you make these to sell? That would be a very nice walking companion for my grandfather on his evening walks in the woods behind his home.
Fantastic gift for a man who gave you the ability to craft a fantastic gift!
Well said, thank you!
Loved the music, spot on.
Thanks, I thought it fit well for this accessory.
Looked like Dad was quite pleased with it. Awesome crafted tool. Cheers.
Ya, he was happy, which made me happy. Thank you.
Excellent idea and a wonderful and thoughtful present for your father.
Thank you! He really did like it!
Just awesome and so is your dad.
Thank you, that means a lot!
That's so cool, not only does it help him be mobile but gives him the feeling of security and strength to protect and defend that he had easier in younger years.... I'm more impressed than I can say... Well done sir!!
Thank you, I really appreciate the kind words.
Maker956 thank YOU for the inspiration
You are very welcome, I tell others the same thing all the time. There are so many great makers out there!
Excellent vid and a terrific gift for your Dad.
Thank you! He seemed to enjoy it too.
Looks good! If I carried it, people would be calling the police every 15 minutes!😁 I look a lot like Robert the Bruce of Scotland. You truly honored your dad.God bless you and yours. I am using a smart phone for the first time, I'm 64 years and it.
It took me 5 minutes to send this
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words! I'm 44 and I'm still trying to figure out my phone too!
Amazing work. Putting in time and effort sure makes all the difference. My construction teacher would be impressed
Thanks, it was a fun one!
What a beautiful piece~!! The practicality is limitless. Great Job!
Thank you, I appreciate it!
That thing looks amazing.
Thank you
Very nice. I have been thinking about making one of those out of a geologist hammer. It would be a cane/war hammer. Thor would be proud..
Thanks, a geologist hammer would be cool too.
Thanks for sharing your tricks of the trade 956. Cool stick, well-made video and thumbs up to you
Thank you. This was my first time in a really long time using the lathe. Glad others appreciate my work.
That's a beautiful piece.
Thanks, it was a pretty special build.
That would look AWESOME in my toolbelt at work! All the lads will be proper jealous!
For sure! For those hard to reach nails!
That was cool and thoughtful and honoring. Well done, sir.
Thank you, I really appreciate the kind words!
Beautiful & Functional. Great job..
Thank you, not the most stable connection in the middle, but it will do.
Excellent video, very to the point and concise. I wish I had a wood lathe.
Thanks I don't use the lathe much but it is fun when a project comes up for it.
Beautiful but the Hammerite spoil it, should have just polished the hammer, bet that paint has come off
Thanks, the paint is still ok so far.
Awesome cane! :) Your Dad will be walking around like Thor lol.
HaHa...Thank you, he would appreciate that.
You're welcome :) It really is a cane fit for a Thunder God ;)
Next time try a threaded dowel I like the idea of a hammer as a handle can be used for self defense
Yes, the middle connection was not my original plan, but the 1st idea didn't work out, so I went with the dowel. When I made this, I never thought about using it as a defensive weapon. It was meant to be a novelty gift for my Dad.
Yeah, I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought, "cane/war hammer". I myself have a sword cane so it's not out of the realm of possibility. And now I want to make this too.
Thanks, go for it, make everything you can!
Going to make myself a "hammer cane", I've used a cane since I broke my back in the army.I'm living in the Philippines now and it doesn't hurt to have a slight tactical advantage when on the street. Thanks for the idea.
Thank you. I'm glad I can help to inspire others! Sorry about your back, stay safe!
Thought it was a hammer! Great! I plan to make one for my self. I never thought of a hammer. Hey, happy birthday pop! 🎂🎁
Well, it was originally a hammer, but I re-purposed the head into a handle. I got the idea from somewhere online.
Very nice.. Great job and love the music.
Thank you, I really appreciate all the support.
The end was the sweetest thing ever.
It is. I'm so glad I caught that on camera. Definitely cherish that one! Thank you!
That was cool, your dad looked like he liked your gift.
Thank you. Yes, he looked pretty happy with it. He doesn't need to use it everyday, but when he needs it, he has it.
Jessie James sent me this link, very, very cool! Great job!....and your vid skills rock, too!
Thanks, I really appreciate your support! I'm still kind of new to the video making thing...but I'm trying.
Words getting out. Vid was great, have you seen some of the crap here on youtube? I check out a lot of firearm related stuff here and too much is borderline dangerous! Your stuff is easy to watch and understand, please don't try and go 'professional' with the footage, keep it 'home style'!
Later,
Lewis
I agree with you. I want my vids to be entertaining and inspirational, but trying to hard to be a big production type "CZcamsr" just seems to me extremely exhausting. Making things is relaxing for me. The videos are an added plus to share my projects with others. I like the 'home style' method too!
Your dad is a lucky guy. Cheers!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
That's really cool
I appreciate it!
I have a 42 inch Jet and make walking sticks.. great idea you have there. I'm planning on a 20 inch bed extension when I have the room for it. Will have to figure out some type of collet system for center support of the staffs I'll turn
Wow, that's awesome. This was actually the first lathe project I have done since High School (over 20 years ago). Still very new to the skill, so I'm really surprised to see such a great response to this build video. Thanks.
Gorgeous work!
Thank you!
You Sir are a very cool son. Nice job!
Thanks, I try to make my parents proud.
Very nice! I appreciate that.
Thank you.
Hope you don’t mind but I’m going to use your hammerhead idea for a handle. Unique idea. I like it.
Wasn't originally my idea, so feel free! I saw it somewhere and thought it was a cool idea too.
That's fantastic !
Thank you!
Loving the music choice!
Thanks, I try to use my old CD's if it doesn't cause too many headaches or issues.
Simply Awesome bro!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you!
That was awesome man!
Thank you!
Very good
Thank you!
Awesome !
Thank you!
Love it brother
Thank you.
Nice job
Thank you, I'm no professional, but it was more of a novelty gift for my Dad.
Fine....now I've got another project to do... Too cool!
Thanks, glad I could share some ideas.
Swing batter swing lol nice piece
Ha ha, I thought about trying to make a bat, but it would be a mini bat, thanks for the like!
Thought/hoped this was going to be a usage/technique video....started for that little old band from Texas. Great choice.
Thanks.
I use a stick everyday due to several spinal injuries I also have a small collection of sticks & canes but that one is pretty special.
I'm sorry to hear that. I agree, this one was pretty special for me. I'm pleased to find so many others find it interesting as well.
That's great for the rock Hound walking exploring rocks
Yes, it would probably come in handy for rock hounds.
That...IS....AWESOME!!!!!!!
Thanks, glad you like it!
Lovely work, sure it will last for generations, where i live in Scotland,if i was walking down the street with that,or anyone else, you would get about a 5 year prison sentence walking the streets with that. Not a Joke,if you have a small pocket knife that could get you a 6 year prison sentence. But still loved watching you create that thank you.
That's crazy! I'm in South Texas and I have always wanted to visit Scotland, it seem so beautiful in movies! Thank you!
I am so stealing this idea! Will use a different shaft, different hammer finish, but thank you for the great idea!
Don't feel bad, I stole the idea from somewhere else too, I thought it was a cool twist on a traditional walking cane.
¡Fantástico!
Gracias.
Well done. That looks amazing! Very practical and looks cool. Quite apart from the fact that if anyone tries to nick his wallet he can smack em with it. Job done!
Ha ha, thanks for the compliment. It's a multipurpose cane!
great job man keep it up
Thank you!
So... a warhammer walking stick. Sweet.
I think I'm out of touch with the "warhammer" thing? But it sounds cool! Thanks!
you do know , now i have to do this awsome thing
That's what sharing all these ideas on the internet is for! Go for it!
Great job
Thank you, I appreciate the support!
Yeah, nice.
But they’ll only let you take it through TSA at the Airport if you show your membership to the ACA.
(American Carpenters Association).
Thanks! 🤣🤣🤣
I got a lil Ballpeen I wanna do that with.
That would be cool, give it a shot!
Good music!
Thanks.
Looked good polished. That joint tho might be a problem in the future but its a really awsome piece man. Awsome idea!
For sure, the connection is not ideal, it was more of a novelty piece, definitely not for excessive use.
EXCELLENT JOB. EXCELLENT VIDEO . EXCELLENT ZZ TOP ❤👍!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Try heating the hammer head with blow torch to expand it and as it cools it’ll tighten on the shaft.
That sounds interesting. I didn't think about that.
Nice warhammer
Not sure what that is, but it sounds good!
Nice gift
Thank you, I appreciated it.
cool - cheers
Thank you.
Good job
Thank you!
pretty cool......I wouldn't want that falling on my foot, or someone else's......that is an outdoor cane
Ya, that might leave a mark, but thank you!
You rocks..
Thank you.
would this not just break in the middle the first time you hit anything with it?
I'm sure it would, but it's meant to be a walking cane not an actual hammer, just decoration.
It's kinda funny, I thought of doing the same thing with an old framing hammer.
Do it! If nothing else it will be a great conversation piece!
I love the "Hammered patina " paint on the head. lol
Thanks. This "hammered" paint is great and very forgiving, it helps to hide little flaws, but otherwise it just looks cool.
I have something similar I made, a walking stick with a 16oz claw hammer on it. I can nail a nail at 3ft
Go Go Gadget Hammer!
geez.. lotta work there.
i just stuck a hammerhead on the end of a cane. ( lazy old man )
Well technically that's what I did... but I did make the cane in my case. But thank you for the appreciation, it was some work!
zz top music obrigado Brasil
Great music!
im sorry you dont have the length in your lathe. I enjoyed your video and your skills.. thanks for the video
I appreciate the support, thank you!
Nice work, however I have several comments... First your choice in making it a 2 piece stick that is only held with a wood dowel looks like a mistake. If you had to make it a two piece, then a deep hole with a steel rod would have worked better. One hit at the union joint with a tree trunk will snap that clean.. Second, the tenon for the hammer joint was too small when you can easily push it down... You should make it snug so that you can hammer the hammer head down slowly with a piece of wood in between.... Also, you cannot expect paint (especially on smooth stainless steel, with no primer) to stick to the hammer head. That is a high friction area, where the paint will get rubbed off on the first hike... I love your woodworking, however...
I agree with your critique, although this was meant for very light "cane" use, not for use as a hammer. The connection was definitely bad, My original plan was to use threaded metal posts, but that didn't work out, so I had to use a dowel and glue in a pinch. Surprisingly the paint has held up rather well. But it was made more for novelty use than actual functionality. He shows it off more than he actually uses it. It was originally made to be a tribute to my Dad for teaching me how to make things when I was younger. Thank you for appreciating my attempt.
Good for self defence.
That's what a few other have said. Thank you.
Why the two piece handle ?
I was limited by the size of my lathe.
Excuse me while I steal your idea. It's way to good to pass up. That's a beautiful cane. I use one and it;s always better to hear "Wow, cool cane" than "sorry you need the help"
By all means! Please share the idea with others...that's what it's all about sharing ideas to help others be creative! I really appreciate the kind words too! It has been great to get such a positive response on this project.
Another inch and it would have been too short. Good job bro
Thanks, ya this was a coordinated effort over the phone with my mother to get the size right, very close indeed.
Sell them. Awesome job!
Thank you, but this was a gift for my father, but who knows maybe in the future.
Sword in a Cane please!!!
That would be cool. Check out Jimmy DiResta's channel - "DiResta Sword in a Cane" That is really cool.
This count as a warhammer?
Not sure?
Nice work, but that style of hammer might prohibit him from entering certain places. His first reaction was "Hammer" not cane.
Ya, probably, but he doesn't use a cane often, it was more of a novelty item for him, a way of me saying thanks to him for teaching me how to make things when I was a kid.
no offense but that big square in the middle makes it look like a table leg
No kidding! I guess I should have planned a better looking design. I kinda just made it up as I went.
I agree with the comment below mine you created a beauty, in my personal opinion I would have taken a ball peen hammer and a actually would have hammered the hammer instead of painting it .....
It was really just for looks and unfortunately I was in a time crunch, but thank you!
ZZ Tp: 😀🇺🇸
Yes sir!
This is illegal in The Great State of California... Jail time
Bummer...
Are hammers illegal?
isn't everything in Cali illegal except illegal aleins
Just OK for illegals!!
Quality work but I don’t like the design. That hammer head is ugly on the cane.
Thank you. Probably not the most functional handle, but it was meant to be more of a novelty than a functional piece.
Nice; what a great idea; I would be proud if my kids made me something like that. I particularly liked the hammer head when you stripped the paint off and polished it!
Thank you. I wanted to represent the time he spent showing me how to make things when I was a kid.
