A wonderful reading! Brought back memories of visiting Jackson, MS and standing outside Miss Welty’s home. My great grandparents were Big papa and Big mama. It’s a timeless story. I have a Stella Rondo across the road from me 😹

Hi Hannah, I read this on the internet a few days ago and just came up on your reading. I was brought up in Brooklyn but a lot of the residence and my project came from down south. So, kiss my foot and having a conniption fit was common conversation. When I was six I told her friend, you finished your homework my eye and she punched me in the eye lol. You read it beautifully and it was hilarious. I have to look up Eudora Welty. This was the first I read of her. Aloha

It would be well to let your listener know that you've taken it upon yourself to edit Welty and so provide an expurgated version of this story. If you're going to read it, be faithful; if you've got a problem with Welty's use of the word, "nigger," then you should choose something else to read: It's fine art; please don't try to make it into some personal ethical statement of position. And spare me any labeling you might direct at me for 'being racist." The artist is the one who always has to look, to see the world as it is. Art need not answer a question--simply raising a good one is quite enough.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I don’t agree that I should pick a different story rather than choose not to say the word aloud, but I absolutely should have acknowledged my elision in the description box. I have now added that in.
