  • Lantern Pike is the destination for this walk. The route most people are familiar with begins in Hayfield village. But I prefer to start from Monks Road or even walk from Coombes Rocks/Cown Edge. It's far from the tallest peak in the vicinity, with Kinder Scout being almost twice it's height, and just over the road (in a way). But it is a popular walk for a good reason! As far as the height-to-view ratio goes, it holds it's own against the biggies, whilst being fairly accessible... at least in terms of gravelly steep paths.
I waited a while to film at Lantern Pike as I wanted the walk toward it to be part of the video, which it is, but for it to be pleasant also. I think I chose a good day overall.. it was windy! (shocker). But the lanes are lined with Cow Parsley blowing in the wind, and the trees had made a decent return by this point.
Well the walk begins on an offshoot from Monks Road, which seems to also be called Monks Road... It's a very straightforward walk along Monks Road - The Sequel, until we get to a small parcel of moorland I know as Matley Moor. Cutting through here is a bit more scenic than circumnavigating it on Monks Road 2. At the other end of this patch of land we get to join the trail again, which after a gate is a very easy to follow gravel path. There's plenty of nice views out towards Cown Edge or Lantern pike itself, but the highlight for me is the overgrown sidings of the drystone walls.
Eventually we'll hit a multidirectional signpost, but none of these point out our destination, so we're going south(ish).
After that very next field we'd be hard pressed to miss the way up to Lantern Pike. We can follow the National Trust signpost and go as upwards as possible! Once at the top it's windy as usual... so we'll take in some sweeping vistas over Kinder Scout and Chinley Churn, before dropping behind the hillside a bit to wander around the cotton grass and wimberry bushes.
Once we've had enough of the peace and quiet we'll bob back up onto the hilltop and head back the way we came. The wind eased off a little on the way back and it's a bit sunnier for the return journey to Monks Road - The Revenge... then home :-D

I've considered doing that lots of times. I've still not decided for sure whether I want to, or whether to leave them as simple as possible.. just as a calm and no-nonsense experience. But I can still add the start points to the description for now until I decide once and for all!
