Build a Collection of High Quality Bespoke Shoes

- 12 pairs of good shoes will give you enough range for most occasions and will help you establish your foundation (sorry about that). But how much do you know about leather, construction, design and the skills of shoemakers in the market to make the right choice? One way (and of course AskOkey encourages this) is to go bespoke, but even if you are buying ready made shoes you need some knowledge to avoid buying shoes that end up on the cupboard floor. Okey goes through each of the 12 pairs of shoes in the capsule wardrobe and explains colours, styles, weight, fit, soles and details such as open or closed laces. Next time you are at a shoe shop, refer to Okey's wisdom and do not forget that shoes cannot do the job alone. They need trousers and jackets (ideally from AskOkey).

Edward Green produces ready made shoes to the most exacting specifications. If you want, or need to go bespoke, St Crispin's of Vienna comes highly recommended.

Explaining purpose, function and structure of setting up your shoe collection.
What's also impressive is how well maintained every item is. Not just the shoes but all the suits, coats and jackets we have seen. Half the battle, I am sure is buying quality but we all would benefit on learning on how to maintain wardrobe items to last.
Thank you brother Zaheer. Well, you been with me a long time so you know me. Indeed we shall look into a segment on wardrobe upkeep. Thank you for the suggestion. PROFF

Welcome to our CZcams Channel my dear
All the men in my family are into classic dress shoes. However, being the youngest of the bunch, I've learned to appreciate a more versatile collection shoes as well.
Mr. Okey Sir, thank you for these videos. I am 26 working on building a wardrobe. I have a lot of items some that are high quality some bespoke suits. I am trying to upgrade to your level one day with bespoke suits from Naples and bespoke shoes you have here. Thank you for your work. Us men appreciate it.
Hi H, thank you for watching and following us on CZcams. Dressing well is a journey. A rather long but delightful one if you enjoy dress. You’ve probably heard this a million times but it is true. Start slowly and develop your own sound (taste). You will learn so much about yourself and eventually arrive at your own “style”. Happy to be a guide as you embark on this journey. Hello my Brother! I am just now coming across your videos. And, all I can say is “What a Blessing!”
You definitely have old school GQ Style! I could listen to you all day talking about this!
Kudos to you! All the best!
Another masterclass helping to guide and inspire our sartorial journeys, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you John Andrew. More to come. PROFF
I have learned so much from listening to this man!! I have been searching for years for the type of clothing and shoes and ties that fits who I am as a person. I've seen nothing that I won't add to my wardrobe as a man.
I can’t think of a better set of styles to begin one’s journey into fine shoe making. Great picks!
Sir, you are a National Treasure.
Very kind of you Mr. Fluellen. Am delighted to be of service SIR! Welcome to AskOkey CZcams Channel. I know you well from our Instagram Account 😁. THANK YOU. PROFF

I admire the careful consideration that went not only into assembling the collection itself but also into selecting the final shoemaker. I think that adopting such a thoughtful approach to some other areas of life can make it a better experience. That said, I find it interesting that you are comfortable with the leather soles. I tend to add an additional Vibram layer for extra grip and security when walking non trivial distances in the city streets.
Thank you Mighty! It was quite an adventure over about 5 years putting together that collection. I even traveled to Milano to interview Marco the new owner of Bestetti (after Ricardo Bestetti passed away). He stood me up in the cold January snow!!!
So going with Phillip Car at St. Crispin was a NO BRAINER. And I’m glad I did. Phillip is a true professional. A bit rough around the edges but he always DELIVERS!
PROFF
@@AskOkeyInc Wow, quite surprising to learn that Mr. Bestetti stood you up. It's quite rude, but I suppose it worked out well since it led you to Mr. Car. Had the gentlemen at Graziano and Girling opened up shop at the time you began your search for a bespoke maker? If so, did you consider them?
@@ruliadultra Please let me clear this up. Marco Facchinetti stood me up. Mr. Riccardo Bestetti was a true gentleman and craftsman by all accounts.
Marco took over the business after Riccardo passed away and promptly ran it into the ground! He is everything Riccardo wasn’t. Wholly unreliable and not a craftsman but a business who thought he could make a quick buck off Ricardo’s legacy.
I tried virtually every Classic shoe maker out there to select a shop to commission my full wardrobe including Gaziano & Girling. I purchased their Rothschild Brogue on the DG70 last. A very well made Goodyear welted shoe but I found G&G lasts a bit too “sharp” for my taste.
St. Crispins last was perfectly balanced. A nice Classic round English last but entirely handmade and hand-welted with an inimitable shape to the last.
I am entirely glad I went with Phillip and intend to keep him as my shoemaker going forward since we’ve done the heavy lifting of perfecting my last on previous commissions. PROFF
Very solid piece!!!
Wow beautiful presentation. Im inspired.
Thanks for this video on shoes, can you also make a quick video on capsule shirt wardrobe and maybe even show some possible colour combination with suits and sports jackets.

Those St Crispin burgundy quarter brogues / Adelaide’s you brought out towards the end were by FAR my favourite. Absolutely exquisite footwear there my man.
Watching this really helped me today. Decided to take a breath, stop panicking about “not having enough yet / trying to get everything too quickly”. Slow down, map out what’s needed in what order and take my time in acquiring good pieces over the next couple of years.

You always have a great vocabulary I think the word would be “Ruggedness” I like to wear Oxford boots with my trousers ala Gianni Angelli!
Thank you Ricardo 😁. Oxford boots (meaning closed laced boots) are called balmorals. Most other dress boots are open laced like derbies. Balmorals are more “formal” and worn with suits and formal dress like morning dress.

Personally I do like espresso brown oxfords with navy and grey worsted suits, but it has to be understood it does level down the formality.
Really nice shoes, but for the average individual the price tag is way way to high. Looking on the website the price is arround 2000$ per pair.

The funny things about English men’s shoes 👞 you pay 💰 more than women’s shoes, but they will last forever ♾️.
I often used archer holders so the shoes 👞 will be comfortable when I decide to wear them. PS women will notice a handsome shoe respecting timeless fashion.
Gentleman is Always Sharp to a T.
I'm very interested in how you wound up wearing the burgundy suede derbies in a conservative fashion, that was like a teaser 😀
I love burgundy shoes!!
They are far more versatile than brown. I was them with almost everything expect Navy and Charcoal gray suits which call for black shoes
Ummmm , I'm uh have to disagree with Not wearing smooth Chucha boot with jeans... They are quite chic.. That smooth OG look..
No blue alligators or crocodiles
Okey, I really thing that flat waxed laces work better with any dress shoe. Even the Mink Suede would be better and look more refined. The round unwaxed laces you have on the Mink Suede really look poor. Please consider…
are they pronounced DARbys?
