The hand gestures were to indicate that he wanted the two fielders close together. You will notice he has two catching covers not just Warner. If he wanted the fielder square he would make a T symbol with his hands.

@@sgtslaughter54 There are a couple of good videos that break down the sport in baseball terms. No one will ever fully figure it out mate, even sometimes as a lifelong cricket fan I occasionally am lost at sea when they start quoting obscure Law #41.412 written in 1803. T20 is the easiest and shortest format, the biggest comp (Indian Premier League) is about to start and only goes for about 2 months. I imagine trying to figure out whats going on it Test Cricket from scratch would be like trying to drink from a firehose.

@@goodshipkaraboudjan imagine a 1 inning baseball game where anything on the inside of the plate is declared a ball by the home plate umpire - utter shit, right? THAT'S T20 or 20 over cricket!
Think of the same but for 9 innings. THAT'S ODI or 50 over cricket!
Think of normal baseball rules BUT it's scheduled for 45 innings for a single game - 5 day test match. Connoisseurs of the game prefer this version.
T20 is "exciting" - new bums on seats and a result in 3 hours from the beginning. NOTHING tactical, just a slogfest, like home run derby.
50 overs is more tactical - Batters need to stick around to build their innings for the team to last 50 overs - does take up to 8 hrs though a result IS known on same day! In this and T20 teams wear colours and the ball is white - suitable for night time under lights
Test cricket between two quality teams is pure tactics, CAN take up to 5 days - that's what THIS game is the video is - this footage is from 5 day version of the game - day 4 which ended up being final day and Australia won. Easy way to tell is both teams wear white and ball is red - NOT suitable for night play! If playing at night they use a pink ball - I think white balls don't last 80 overs as well as red/pink balls when fielding teams gets brand new ball to use. Newer balls tend to be harder, fly through the air faster and swing through the air more - beautiful to watch.

Not to mention the game lasts for up to 5 full days. The weather, the condition of the ball and pitch are always changing. A brand new ball is smooth, hard and fast and skims through like a pebble, while an older ball is rough and can be spun to change the angle when bouncing. The fielding team will often "shine" the ball on one side, while letting the other side roughen up. This allows the ball to "swing" through the air as the rough side creates drag. Eventually though the ball will become to rough on both sides.

Look up "Shane Warne - Ball of the Century"
Fact: there are fast bowlers who use swing, seam, speed, bounce to BEAT the batter - this video is of a fast bowler. There are also spin bowlers who spin the ball and when it bounces if there's enough spin it can change direction WILDLY and deceive the batter. THIS "ball of the century" was a masterpiece that would be considered brilliant at ANY time but this was his first ever ball in England and COMPLETELY bamboozled a good player of spin. Warne's career was JUST getting started but this ABSOLUTELY launched his career and from that moment he was considered a magician with the ball! He singlehandedly changed the game - definitely for the better, he excited crowds - tragically he died of a heart attack last year but he will NEVER be forgotten by those of us who love the game.
      czcams.com/video/16mudGUYsBw/video.htmlsi=AYWf1gY1tEkfsKYk
      czcams.com/video/s3V-sYH0Sks/video.htmlsi=Ah4ovAoGJuD7mt_b
SO BEAUTIFUL! Not only does it spin hard once it lands, it swerves in the air before bouncing - a LONG way. Gatting (the batter) follows flight path with his bat and the ball spins past the edge of his bat and hits the top of the stumps - SO BEAUTIFUL to watch. THIS ("leg spin bowling") is the most difficult art in cricket and Warne MASTERED and redefined it.
Poor Stuart MacGill had the misfortune of mastering the same craft at the same time and rarely got a game because Warne was better on most occasions.
czcams.com/video/rnyQFWJTvQI/video.htmlsi=CbGpenvJBCIV9CY2 - SUPER slow motion - just track this delivery frame by frame. UNBELIEVABLE!

Love seeing you enjoy these moments.. Another classic move by Cummins was getting the 9th wicket where he bowled Hasan. It was the fast bowlers classic One Two punch. Good bouncer at the head followed by a good ball at the wickets (the bouncer makes them slightly more hesitant to get forward to the next ball), while only a tailender it's still a classic combo. The main problem these days is that, because they're playing T20s where scoring immediately/swiftly is essential, they don't check out a delivery or 2 before throwing willow at the leather! Rizwan also doesn't have the patience to think about exactly what Cummins is planning and batting accordingly. If Cummins doesn't get the desired result after 3-4 balls, he'd adjust his line and length and maybe give Rizwan smth to hit, or change the field and remove the 'danger'.

Cricket is the 2nd most watched sport in the World, so he didn't "save" cricket commentary. Test Cricket commentary is usually pretty good.
The majority of the newer commentators are former legends of the game, so you'll get alot of insight DURING the match itself (it's almost like having an MLB network segment on pitching with Pedro except DURING the match--the closest comparison I can think of is when Schmoltzy comes on and explains stuff about pitching..... but imagine if instead of one person doing it during the postseason/whatever game Schmoltz happens to be on, it's literally every single Test series and not just that, there's usually a legendary former batsman or two there giving counter points)
In all honesty, Test Cricket is the ultimate sport.
In terms of technique, concentration required, potential discussion points/theory involved, HISTORY of the game....
I mean if ur a fan of baseball history just wait till you start reading up on Cricket history and the history of the great players.

You will often see strategies like this one in the Test games. There was a very good one set by Pakistan in the Third (Pink) Test at the SCG. Pakistan set three catchers in positions between short cover and point. The Aussie batter, who I recall was Captain Pat, fell hook, line and sinker scooping the next ball to one of the catchers
Strategies and tactics like these have long been a part of the "heady" Test game but these are being eroded in the bash and bang abbreviated variant T20. The strategies involved in "playing for a draw" could also be lost given these other variants are often decided by mathematical formulae.

It's a poor shot selection rather than a bad general mindset. It would have been better to thread that ball more square, i.e. way to the left of Warner given that there was nobody there. That is what that ball really merited.

    • @neilpemberton5523
      @neilpemberton5523 Před 8 měsíci

That's true, but driving a full ball square is risky in itself. The batter has to hit more across the line of the ball, so perfect timing is needed to avoid a mis-hit. It was too wide for him to get his foot to the pitch of the ball, so he had less control either way. He should have just let it through to the keeper. Pat played it nicely and sucked him into a loose shot.

How is it that you could possibly miss my point by so much?
Top level, Major League Baseball players with a year's worth of training in cricket would have the best athleticism the U.S. has available, plus a bit more than minimal game savvy. They would easily beat the U.S. cricket team. The question is, would they beat any decent pro teams from other countries.
I'm not sure if you understand how skilled MLB players are at baseball, and how hard it is to be that good. Most of the skills needed to play cricket and baseball are similar, but just different enough to make the transition less than a certainty. Some guys would make the change with some practice, and others might not.
Nonetheless, if the U.S. outlawed baseball, and replaced it with cricket, and if the American public enthusiastically bought tickets, the cream of American youth would be diverted to cricket. That means a country with over 300 million people would be sifting through their boys to find the very best players. The U.S. would not win every world cricket championship, but other countries would consistently worry about playing them.
