Nice video. I just returned a Samyang 85 after a month. I found the eye focus slow and hit and miss, plus it was very noisy - clicking - when filming. However with stills when it was worked it was amazing. It had amazing separation. It was running a previous firmware version so I’m wondering if that might have solved some issues, but then I’d have to buy a dock. I’m just wondering if I should try another one or go for the Sony. I’m also now tempted by the Viltrox!
Can't go wrong with the Sony, you know it's gonna work. I will say I've been using the Viltrox for months and it's been solid. Image quality is on par with the Sony. Totally up to you tho. It's a savings of about $150 bucks off the Sony.
I would probably spend the extra $ and get the Sony. If it was like the Fuji 90/f2 ($949) I would get the viltrox because it's less than half the price. Great job giving us the info that matters.

Music straight out of a John Carpenter 80s movie and I dig it. I've got the Sony but if the Viltrox had been out when I got it I might have considered going Viltrox with that cost savings without sacrificing a ton of quality.
The difference in AF is big and specially in accuracy. If you are doing pro work where you want to make sure you GET the shot, then get the Sony..$150 is not that much money in the end. Plus Sony is a proven lens and company vs Viltrox. If the Viltrox was maybe $300 or even $350 maybe it will be a more debatable decision but as it is, I dont see a reason to get the Viltrox over the Sony to save $150 and miss more shots.
Good points. I think after the firmware update (I mentioned this in the video) the Viltrox is a MUCH more capable lens. I'd trust it with a paid shoot. You do get the product support of Sony tho you are absolutely right, and they are a tried and true name, plus the native option. I respect your position 💯. Thanks for watching

Great review man! Have you had any issues with your camera freezing, turning off or having a black screen? Some people have said they’ve had this issue when shooting. It’s the only thing putting me off getting it as reliability to me is important as I’d be using it at weddings. I want the Zeiss 85mm but it’s too expensive😭

Hoping Nikon catches up to Sony on Auto-focus, brothers. Also don’t care about lens weight; I used to shoot using a Colt 1911 .45 in law enforcement - weight can be a blessing because it helps steady your aim! Dope as always, T! 💛😎
I landed here because I want to see bokeh of big objects like say full human body at f 1.4 from some distance and see how good the bokeh is. Small objects like leafs, lens, grasses are not significant as even a dirt cheap 7artisan 25mm can do better. For such type of lens like the 85mm clicking the open street or tiny object like leafs and face only will not justify these lenses. Seated a child or a person at around 20ft and see if it separate the subject from foreground and background and see how sharp it is,if the bokeh is high contrast or if it is not distracted. Those are the way lenses were tested back in those days.
If only the viltrox worked. The 85mm is notorious for failing, locking up, stop being responsive. I got one and i'm pissed at the lack of response from Viltrox for support. It's literally stopped working within a couple of months.
Same. A lot of times the contacts are dirty. I gave it to a buddy of mine and it wouldn’t focus. The first thing he did was cleaned the contacts and VOILA it worked. For some reason Viltrox lenses are really prone to malfunction once the gold contacts are dirty. Try cleaning them. Also, the first version of this lens caused a lot of camera lockups that I didn’t start to experience until after owning it a few months. I will say the second generation is MUCH better.
