  • MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE actors Rufus Sewell and Joel de La Fuente sit down with ComicsVerse's Jordan Parrish for an interview at New York Comic Con this 2018.
MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE takes place in an alternate world where the Axis Powers of World War II saw victory over the Allied Forces of the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Russia.
Rufus Sewell portrays the role of conflicted Nazi commander John Smith. Joel de La Fuente portrays Chief Inspector Kido. Chief Inspector Kido hails from the original Japanese motherland but resides in Japanese occupied San Francisco for more than a decade and a half before he gradually becomes more American than he wants to admit.
We also have an interview with Alexa Davalos and Chelah Horsdal here: • Alexa Davalos & Chelah...
Season three of this epic television show premieres this week! Not only were we lucky enough to see season three early, but we had the pleasure of speaking with both these actors about their characters and the controversial premise that MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE builds itself on.
In addition, we scored some juicy season three gossip as well as some cool insights!
How do you handle playing a friggin’ Nazi on TV?
Rufus Sewell: I said this before but it’s an object lesson in what happens to humans is our ability to normalize. One of the many versions of that is how an actor gets used to the mise en scene and the props, the costumes. When I first tried on the S.S. outfit it was quite a moment and everyone in the room, there was a pall of silence that came over. I remember going out to the corridor and people going, “Whoa! Okay, okay.” You know?
There was a palpable feeling of we’d entered into a kind of zone. I remember a couple of days later walking past someone and them going, “Cool!” And a couple of days later, “Hey Rufus!” It’s just your clothes after a while and you become swastika-blind. Because my office, in our last kitchen, in the Smiths’ last home, I didn’t even know that the linoleum was in a swastika pattern!
After a while this is what happens. It just becomes, that’s what floors look like. And we have to kind of decompress the end of a season because we’ve become anesthetized to it because that is what happens to your environment. What is today’s horror is tomorrow’s accepted reality and this is what happens to people. This is how Nazism can happen. This is how all sorts of shit happens. That’s my experience.
How does the inner conflict in Chief Inspector Kido manifest differently than in other characters?
Joel de la Fuente: For me, for season three, in particular, I think of Kido as sort of the accidental immigrant in a way. He’s been in America for 17 years. He says all of these things about his opinions about America and about westerners and the superiority of the Empire in Japan, but he’s that person who’s becoming the unexpected immigrant.
Suddenly his wife says you speak Japanese with an accent and all of a sudden he doesn’t like the food at home as much as he likes the food in America. Suddenly we realize the way in which he deals with certain problems are in a very American sort of way. In season one, he goes off and he takes it into his own hands. He shoots the killer, the attempted assassin of the crown prince because he thinks it’s going to cause war. That’s in direct contradiction to the way that you’re supposed to do things. To duty and order and the chain of command. It’s a very maverick American thing to do.
For me that’s the paradox that we’ve been thinking about in season three where he still uses it in service of his idea of the Empire but he’s become this strange hybrid of an American, this person who’s serving the Empire with American enthusiasm.
How do Smith’s feelings about the Reich change in season 3?
Rufus Sewell: I think it confirms fears and struggles that he’s had right from the start. He knows he’s made a devil’s bargain. He has tussled with the Smith that he might have been. That still exists somewhere in him, so even when he appears to be a zealot, he has doubts. He’s just dealt with them in a zealot’s way which is sometimes the doubting zealot’s the dangerous ones. So when things start to come calling for the prize there’s an inevitability, a kind of grim irony to him.
When he becomes aware of the existence, the possibility of a different reality in which he was unburdened by these choices. Where there’s a possibility that some of the things that happened didn’t have to happen has a powerful spell on him but it sends him deeper into secrecy. It separates him further from his wife. Ostensibly to protect her from something she can’t handle. He thinks that’s the reason. But it isolates him further.

You guys are harsh on Juliana :) i don't totally disagree, but she was a very good character in the 1st two seasons. They lost her way at the same time as everything else when they went too far down the multiverse path. If they had focused less on Nazi's going to the other world and more on their world, but with the mysterious films always manipulating characters, then I think Juliana would have been better used. Ultimately, the 4th season became the 'close Smith & Kido arcs' show. I was sad that the Trade Minister was written out of Season 4 too - this is what happens when a show is pulled and funding cut, but at least they finished it.

Even as a born rebel American, John Smith was injured by all the Reich did to him therefore, leading to the murder of Himmler. He cleansed what he saw as the evil, but didn’t realize he lost himself to them long ago. Perhaps, a balance in his mind that they murdered Thomas and also created the means for him to see Thomas again. Of the many things that bothered me about the 4/ final season, was the (SORAS) Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome they put Toru KIdo (Kido's first son) through. Unfortunately for the series, the characters had a very interesting backstory in the behind-the-scenes information, but they deleted it and did nothing with it. While one can still find it on the internet, I think incorporating the backstories into a more uniform story line would have made the characters more well rounded. jennacolemans.tumblr.com/post/183342877093/the-man-in-the-high-castle-character-bios
Takeshi Kido was born sometime in 1917 to a poor tenant framer, and was the 4th of 8 children. Given that Kido was the son of a tenant framer he had very limited opportunists, but was extraordinarily bright. The only way Kido could ever obtain social mobility was by running away to join the military at 15. That was how he was eventually recruited into the Kempeitai.
What bothers me about Toru's character is that, in Kido's character Bio, he finally marries Akiko (his wife) in 1950. With the series starting in 1962, Toru and Wataru (his two sons) would have been around 12-10 years old. Therefore, I feel like the actor who plays older Toru should have been a mental projection of Kido when he was at the Rape of Nanking. In public, Kido seems to be a very well-disciplined and frighting man, but he battles personal demons in private. Hence his increased consumption of alcohol as the series progresses. Personally, I'd have the alt-reality travel drop, because I (as the viewer) feel like I'm forced to watch two difference series: alt-reality sifi and an alt-period drama. The alt-reality could've just been a way for characters to explore their grief and reservations.
Even before I found this on Amazon's behind the scenes function, in season two, there was a feeling (to me) that Kido loved his wife and two sons [See S2Ep7 and the information about the boys from Kido's call home: The boys seemed to be like junior high kids and having interests and behaviors linked to that age group]. From his current post, however, he could not say no. Moreover, because of his military service at a young age, he may not know how to relate to his sons. Yet, his wanting to avoid nuclear war could stem from him not wanting his boys not to be forced into the military as young teenagers.Because of the crushing situation from the Great Depression, many men and teenagers joined the service for social mobility. Unfortunately for Kido, there was more than what he had bargained for.
Sorry for the long comment--I very much agree with you--but this is why Bio's in a consistent narrative are important. Heck! Kido could have made a deal with the Yakuza to see that he and his family could safely leave the JPS for something other than having the plot line of retreating from JPS territory.

This is a really interesting post.
In his performance Joel always gave the impression of a character repressing his own feelings at the cost of great inner conflict and in the last few episodes that a burden had been lifted.
It looks like they rewrote his son to be of military age to make his last - season arc resemble Smith's. I enjoyed it because I'd never got any previous impression of his family life or the age of his children.

    • @113-M
      @113-M Před 3 lety +2

@@alanpennie8013 Hm... "An arc to resemblance Smith's..." Well, the writers could have done that by showing the mental projections of '15-year-old Kido,' 'rape of Nanking Kido' and 'Solomon's Kido' (remember Smith's nightmares). Another element the could have used to resemble Smith's arc is have Toru & Wataru as child soldiers. I don't have much information on the subject, but during WWII the Riech (See, Hitler Youth) and the Japanese military did use their own children as soldiers. Now, given that Kido went to war at 15, and that his boys are almost as old as he was--Kido, now a husband and father--could not go through with it. Reinforce his desire to prevent war. What's the role of a shortstop in baseball again? That analogy could be used to show how Kido prevents war--or could be a military code word for something his son is doing for the Army! 🤮
Anyway, why did this upset me: Because season 4 was so rushed? Party that, but let me give another Smith example: somewhere in late season one John is looking at photos of his deseased older brother, to which Helen replies: Do you know how lucky you were to have a sibling? I grew up playing with dolls on my own. Then in season 4, she suddenly has a brother --that offers her and the girls safety in the Nutrality Zone, Montana? Convinient.
The series set a character rule, breaks it, but does not offer a logical explanation to replace it. Here's how you could do it: In her Bio, Helen's parents were academics, and the were shot by the Riech. During the chaos, Helen's brother was a soldier believed to be dead. Upon the murder of their parents, her brother flees to the Nutrality Zone, and Helen stays in the Riech. Could Helen's brother be used as a scapegoat to 'protect the family?'
Does my position make sense? Thank you.

Agreed, this is also amplified by the fact that the Nazis were also a complex and a sophisticated group of people- it’s not as black and white as history makes it out to be. Most of the time people think Nazi they’re actually thinking the SS and the horrors certain groups within the SS carried out or practice. Overall, in addition to being a political org the Nazis were also occult in belief, and extremely studious. This occult belief and their obsession in the search for esoteric and ancient knowledge and civilizations made then extremely advanced not just in technology. It also made being a Nazi more desirable as they were seen as the more enlightened folk at the time.

Kido-San gave Frank an honorable death by beheading him with the sword out of the public eye as opposed to having an entire squad of soldiers bayonet him one by one like that other dude. There was no way he could just let Frank go free given his code of honor and allegiance to the empire so from Kido's perspective he was really doing Frank a favor by giving him a death befitting a fellow warrior deserving of respect. It's the samurai way ;)

Sometimes the names, places, issues get a bit mixed up viewing this way, but it works out. I am surprised how I have sympathy or even "root" for some of the villains issues. Smith's marriage, his kids, etc. It def brings home the point that they are regular men who became monsters, perhaps for their own reasons or a new belief system. We'll see more of that.
