WTF is a Crumpet

The top of a crumpet looks like the surface of the moon, and the bottom resembles a perfectly browned pancake. Once toasted, the exterior becomes crusty, while the interior stays soft and almost gooey. Crumpets can be covered in peanut butter, jam, and Marmite, but I favored the most common topping, butter. Pro tip: Wait until the butter melts through the top’s pores and pools in the crumpet’s center for ultimate glutenous greatness.

English muffins are just American slang for the crumpet.

Not really. They are similar, but there are differences. Traditionally, crumpets use only baking powder for leavening and English Muffins use yeast. This gives the English Muffin a much denser texture than the crumpet. Comparing taste: the crumpet is a griddlecake, the English Muffin is a griddlebread (the English Muffin tastes much more like bread than the crumpet). And the traditional crumpet is only cooked on one side while the English Muffin is cooked on both. Having a crust on both sides makes the English Muffin chewier than a crumpet. Crumpets are also only about 3/4 as thick as an English Muffin. So, English Muffins are thicker, yeastier, have a different texture, a different mouthfeel, a different flavor profile, and are cooked differently than crumpets. And finally, the English Muffin is meant to be split in half and toasted before serving. The crumpet is eaten hot off the griddle, or only toasted lightly to preserve its soft center. They are cousins, not siblings.
