And now he's gone. The music world has lost a giant. So grateful I lived in SF in the 1980s, where he lived, and got to see him often. RIP, Pharoah. Your music is an inspiration to millions.
It was this version, of this track, alongside 'Visions' by Stevie Wonder that made me listen to music in a different way. I was a child, and discovered both of these tracks around the same time. Stay blessed with our ancestors Pharaoh. 🙏
...awesome.... For me it was Ella.... Sounds strange yeah, sure until you learn what life for a coloured woman in the early 20th century was like. Such poise and humility these people have.... These are the lessons that we must pass on.
Pharoah Sanders - Tenor Sax Eddie Henderson - Flugelhorn John Hicks - Piano Ray Drummond - Bass Idris Muhammad - Drums Dee Dee Dickerson, Bobby McFerrin, Vicki Randle, Ngoh Spencer - Vocals
only 7200 plays? A disgrace. Wake up, people, and hear the pure sound of the great Pharoah - whose music truly is a healing force in the universe. Magnificent.
+megis ynynef People of Today is not in tune. Most people that listen to this music has some sort of Knowledge of Self and Culture. Keep Hope Alive though,,,
it's no understatement to say that Pharoah is a musical treasure of the highest & most sacred kind! Every time i listen to his music i am transported to a blissful realm where enlightenment and happiness exists in abundance!
We have lost another legend. Rest in peace Pharoah Sanders. Thank you for blessing us with such a wonderful body of work. Your music will live on eternally. I’m fortunate enough to have been able to see and hear him many years ago in Newark, NJ. Absolutely beautiful performance!🔥👏🏾❤
Only just heard of his passing. There were tears of sadness but also of joy knowing he left us with so many wonderful moments as he completed his journey here. May your horn blow forever with God and the angels in Heaven. RIP you ol fader!
Thank you Pharoah Sanders and company for this most delightful music ❤️ Thank you to my dear late brother Samuel for introducing me to this awesome music. Still my favourite. Music at its Finest ❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely Feel Good Music at its Finest, you gotta have peace and love to sit and Enjoy this Awesome Classic. Heavenly, Grown Folks Music all Day Long.
Man I didn't even know that was a thing! Took me down a bit of a rabbit hole. Seems both corny and a lot of fun, and weirdly authentic! I thought they had ditched the authenticity in the early 70s. Glad to see jazz lives everywhere
.... when I first heard this in 1993 .... when I first to could fully comprehend the depth of it all..... I knew at that very moment that my soul had evolved.
The "Brooklyn funk essentials" do a very good rendition of "The creator has a master plan" ... I get all of the young ones to listen.... Soul inspiring...
Cm9-Dm7-Gm7-Am7. Rinse. Repeat. How they manage to keep four chords interesting for almost severn minutes is beyond my comprehension, but they surely do. John Hicks (p), Ray Drummond (b), Idris Muhammad (d). BTW, one of the singers is Bobby McFerrin, a couple of years before he recorded his first album.
Yeah it IS amazing. Pharoah is a little like John Coltrane turned rock star. But I dont mean that in a disparaging way. Pharoah, like his mentor JC and many other predecessors, has a clear mission of carrying a message of spiritual uplift through music.
🇺🇦✌🏾💛We gotta’ have peace & love.... We gotta have freedom & more worldwide freedom for ev‘rryone! 🇺🇦✌🏾💛Many prayers of blessings along with lovin’support from the Lord-Saviour for our brothers & sisters of the Ukraine!!!
Just as the first note of this exquisite tune will continue to travel through space, backward in time, so too will our memorialization of it (on this thread). It will also mark our brief time here, sharing our appreciation of this gift, long after we have moved on. Much peace and love to you all, as we journey to the One.
First heard this on the radio going to work & wondered how could I have missed hearing this inall my years of listening. Pharoah wails.. love that opening tenor cry. Hick's as always plays beautifully. great track.
The best by a long chalk , pharoah reaffirms my belief in a being greater than humanity. By far the most amazing piece of dance music created. If you can't feel this you are dead. Love to the world peace
Man just the first 25 seconds affirms the value of life, Hicks has such fluidity, the voices and instrumentation are very complimentary, the flugalhorn is outstanding. Man, this stopped me in my tracks.
Pharoah Sanders held in very high esteem in the Jazz world as one of the finest ever, especially with his brand of spiritually etherall Jazz, always value for money, certainly one of the greatest saxophonists to have blown on the instrument, with tracks like the Gathering & Jitu to his bow, a living legend
Such a classic piece of all out happiness and celebration of life. This and Astral Travelling are Pharoah Sanders finest for me. In fact, the Thembi album is a masterpiece
Probably duplicating myself, bút what a phenomenal set of musicians! Truly reaches the soul! John Hicks is so energetic and lyrical, what a loss for humanity :-) At least recordings of his work are available to remember his contributions.. has a wonderful discordance that brings intrigue, the trumpet and flugelhorn solos are exceptional!
I remember when my dad brought this album home. He played this a few times and Think about the One. By then, I was really into jazz. My dad called this hard jazz. I think I was 11 or 12 at the time. Great times with AM radio WBEE in Harvey,Illinois. Wally Muhammad and Marty Faye. Smooth Jazz is great but this stuff here, fiyah...
Very sad. Even though Larry Smith continued playing at WBEZ the local NPR station until they decided to downgrade & eventually dump "jazz" . Mark Ruffin still swings on one of those satellite jazz stations & occasionally produces music. And it was Wally Muhammad who hosted a Saturday Jazz program.
God is so good!! So grateful I found this. Had been listening to ‘Think about the onez’ for so many years I never moved past it! Thank you Pharaoh for existing. And sharing your grace. 🙏🏾
And now he's gone. The music world has lost a giant. So grateful I lived in SF in the 1980s, where he lived, and got to see him often. RIP, Pharoah. Your music is an inspiration to millions.
Yes it's sad indeed - that's so good you got to see him play.... one in a million x x
lucky basterd! I can't imagine the atmosphere of his playing the pure emotion and energy.
@@MrOldmanjenkin1 Also got to see the Dead in the best venues.
That sax just SCREAMS out in pain, in ecstasy, in every emotion you could ever conjure up...
I don't like using the word "feel" in music but GODDAMN this has tons of feel
You are so right. Ecstasy and revelation and agony all at once.
Man, you totally get the piece!
Joy.
carves the etches of my sentient soul, music for the essence!!

Rest In Peace Pharoah Sanders. Thank you for all the joy you brought into my life.
I was lucky to watch him perform in Nigeria in the 80s
It was this version, of this track, alongside 'Visions' by Stevie Wonder that made me listen to music in a different way. I was a child, and discovered both of these tracks around the same time.

Damn! This is why some people love jazz. Sometimes magic happens.
This song makes me feel like I'm in church and Pharoah is the minister preaching the gospel. We want to be free.
He whom the sun sets free is free indeed
He whom the son sets free is free indeed
YES ! Gotta have peace and love!
I feel i am a gorilla scaping and killing people
God spoke to us through Pharoah's horn.

Pharoah Sanders - you helped to raise my energy over the years. I am forever grateful. Terrie
One of my fave piano jazz works. Though Pharaoh blew his heart out, John Hicks was just in another dimension.
Thanks for sharing the pianist's name

Peace, Love & Freedom. Values worth fighting for.
I never heard this version before today but it moved me to tears. Beautiful!
The best version as far as I am concerned
Man this version really caught my soul - that horn capturing birth's raw struggle balanced by the sweet background vocals hope and promise. Classic!

Alright, now say it again.
Anybody here from the indie game "ape out"? No...? This game introduced me to this awesome genre :D

I'm actually here from Jacob Geller's video essay on ape out. He expresses exactly how wonderful You Gotta Have Freedom is when it plays in the game.
