    Info for the Hoff on tuning 4age20v. The logic that controls the VVT comes in three types for the 20 valve. To the best of my knowledge, silvertop 20v's pre May 1993 have the VVT actuate at about 4400rpm. Post May 1993 they seem to work on throttle position and ignore revs.
    The blacktops seem to work like this, as described on Club4AG -
    1. Starting. When you crank the starter there will be VVT operation until the engine fires up, obviously to allow more air into the engine to allow an easier fire up.
    2. Coolant temp. There is absolutely NO VVT operation when the coolant tempt is below 50c except for that brief moment when you operate the starter. Reason obvious, who want to stress a cold engine.
    3. Engine rpm. VVT will operate in any rpm between the range of 1500 and 7200 when the inlet manifold pressure is right. The min and max range can be a little out because I was reading from the car tacho. Trust me they are very close.
    4. Engine load/inlet manifold pressure. This seems to be the single most important parameter controling the system. The VVT will NOT operate if the inlet manifold has more than about 5 inches of vacuum (can't get the exact reading because everything happen so fast. It's very close.). This is very close to zero vacuum which is atmospheric and that is about the maximum load the map sensor will read to tell the engine in an NA car. As you can figure out the throttle will usually be in the more than 3/4 position for this to happen.
    5. VVT will work without the speed sensor.

    Gonna do the typical CZcams comment here: Al does make a good point... There is no point revving the engine past max power when going for power numbers.
    AFAIK, it can be beneficial when on a circuit as even though you start to lose power, you may still have more power than the next ratio.
    Power curve depending of course
    As always, love the videos guys. Definitely, a video to watch with headphones on!
    HRRRRRUUUUUURRRRR!

    • @ROGUESPIRIT_
      @ROGUESPIRIT_ Před 4 lety

      Plus the fact when you change up your power put down is dropped by the gear ratio.

    • @helplmchoking
      @helplmchoking Před 4 lety +2

      Absolutely, high revs are only useful if you can keep throwing fuel, air and spark into the engine to keep up, otherwise you're just leaning on the engine way too hard.
      And you're right about circuit driving. It depends how far apart the gear ratios are, but generally if you're not gaining any power by revving higher, you're out of the engines efficiency band and changing up should drop it back in

    • @NBSV1
      @NBSV1 Před 4 lety +3

      Usually you want a run or two past peak power if you expect to rev it that high racing so you can figure out where to shift. Ideally you want the most power throughout the curve. So unless if falls off quick after peak you’ll rev it past peak so it doesn’t fall to low when you shift.
      And, hopefully the higher gears are a closer ratio so you’re keeping it closer to peak power.

    • @goblinphreak2132
      @goblinphreak2132 Před 4 lety +1

      to add to this, back when I used to go to the drag strip as a noobie, I kept being told "never redline the engine, most engines run out of power before redline, so shift at the end of the power curve" BUT, this resulted in 16.4 runs in a 1993 honda del sol which "factory rating" for my engine model was 16.8.... running it to the redline and ringing it out, I ended up hitting 15.9.... which I was told should be impossible because of the stock rating for that engine with no mods. now some have argued "clearly there is power all the way to redline" as an excuse, but it doesn't. the fact was, shifting right when power ended resulted in dropping below the power band, and having to "chug" your way back into it. the idea that an engine revs "more free" at high rpm than low rpm.... so by going to redline, you have an easier time getting through that extra space, and when the rpm drops from gear shift, you get put RIGHT INTO the power band. every single car ive ever taken to the track, I would look at where the max power was and shift at that point, vs shifting redline, and redline racing has ALWAYS resulted in the fastest times. even going through 4 different vehicles I have owned, 3 different brands too with all of them having massively different engine designs.... of course someone will probably get pissed off reading this then give me a ton of shit for it. but ive lived it. not just a keyboard warrior XD

    E85 has higher octane but lower energy than 98 octane. This means that more fuel is used for the same power production so technically less power is being made. But because higher boost and more aggressive timing can be used the engine can be forced to make more power than it can on a lower octane fuel, if a fuel with as much energy as 98 but much higher octane was used even more power can be made with less fuel burnt.

    Damn Woody that is one tidy MR2. Brilliant resto. I love the wheels but agreed with Al the fitment isn't something I'd go for. I would still be pretty happy to own that though 👌. Great job and great series.

    The vvt on the blacktop is only for the mid range rpm. It should be off at low engine speed and turn off again at high engine speed. Could that be the reason why the engine is not making power past 7.5k rpm?

    • @michelledrent5400
      @michelledrent5400 Před 4 lety +1

      Factory ECU uses a load point to trigger the VVT. The trigger range is (as tested so known) 2500-8000. To replicate this test, simply do a A/B test of VVT on and off. To disable the VVT solenoid, unplug it.
      The factory load point is unknown. From what I have seen, a good trigger point for aftermarket ECUs is using the Throttle Position Sensor and setting it to activate the VVT at 20%.
      Restoring the VVT activation at low RPM produces much greater torque for greater acceleration. Its activation advances the cam to increase overlap and close the valves earlier thus creating and trapping more mass. Due to how it works, torque gains are larger at lower RPM, trailing off to nothing at peak RPM. In my opinion, switching off and on during an RPM is not fully utilising the benefits that the VVT was designed for.

    A 40 year old 1.6 liter NA engine making 160whp? I am very impressed. It sounds sick and probably gets better mileage than my car with 1 less cylinder and half the power.

    I reckon that engine's got a bit more to give on the internals you've got. 150's typically what you'd get out of a moderately-built 16-valve Redtop; a Blacktop with modest internal upgrades is probably good for...oh, about 170 on 98-octane pump gas, I'd wager. Still, I know this engine's not in the greatest condition (though I've seen worse), and discretion is the better part of valor...or a thrown rod.
    Woody, I want to thank you and Al both for doing this. This isn't quite how I would've done my own MR2 if I had the time, money, and skill to devote to it, but it's pretty damn close. I don't know that I'll ever be able to get another AW11, and getting to watch one get brought back to life in a spec very similar to what I wanted to do with mine is...well, it's cathartic. So...thanks, guys.

      The Hoff has a full house big dollar 16 valve engine in his circuit racing AE86 and it makes 185hp at 10000rpm. A std blacktop is not going to go near that.
