      Been around these things too many times. If you think this chamber itself is something worth then think again. Kudos for business acumen of this company installing this chamber for free 😂 this is like drug dealer giving you first time free. Only accessories will set you off hundreds of thousands like all rotational tables, myriad of antennas, etc… then all equipment which will probably take few mil. And then salaries of people who actually know what they are doing. This is the reason why you don’t see this kind of setups even in very wealthy companies. Anyone who makes any kind of electronic product whatsoever should be saying "oh yeah I can use that". Or, "oh yeah, we rented one of those". (The more likely case.)
      Yes, ALL (read: ALL!!!!) products should be EMC tested. However, sometimes they are made in China and violate this. Or sometimes they don't have any kind of RF receiver/transmitter, and the manufacturer is like, "eh, screw it we don't give a damn". But, unintentional radiator emissions is a thing.

      Those two people, if they're in the market for it, are the kinds of people who have probably been tearing their goddamn hair out looking for a company that can just do this one goddamn thing correctly. And seeing it done correctly is often a lot more than you tend to get from most businesses like this. Usually you get a spec sheet, some technical video full of roses and spit polish, maybe a written review from somebody you've never heard of... that's it. Industry folks usually figure out which companies to hire based on who their peers are hiring. In competitive industries, they'll even keep that info secret because they don't want anyone else knowing about their suppliers. So a sponsorship like this could mean bagging some big clients.

    This whole lab setup is going to be absolutely massive for consumer tech. With the industry being more complex and harder for the layperson to understand everyday, it’s also easier than ever for dubious claims to go unnoticed, and realistically not that many people without field specific expertise were asking for something like this. As an audio nerd I was giddy to see you buying top of the line measuring tools, but this is something I wouldn’t have even considered an option before today. My only rule for a router is no Broadcom chips as Broadcom has bad support for things like OpenWrt. I found a nice Qualcomm router which might I add is very overspeced called the DynaLink DL-WRX36, it is a WiFi 6 router with 1, 2.5G WAN port, a quad core Qualcomm IPQ8072A, 1GB of ram (doesn't sound like a lot but many routers have wayyyy less than this), 256MB Flash (again, might not sound like a lot but many routers have less), has OpenWrt support and have been running it stable for months on that (even though it is still on a snapshot release), the only caveat is that I would not trust the default firmware that comes with it just because the company is unknown so I would recommend installing OpenWrt and the most important thing (yes, even more important than these overkill specs) is the device uses Qualcomm and not Broadcom, I made the mistake of going for an Archer AX21/AX20/AX1800 (yes, Web UI, UART, and sticker on the bottom all said different model numbers) and it was painful, Dynalink has been working beautifully

    • @ccoder4953
      @ccoder4953 Před rokem +6

      @@Spushed Honestly, for most of that, just unplug any external cables and disconnect any antennas and it'll probably be fine. If you want details, well, they're actually a little hard to find precise details on what an EMP actually looks like and you start running into needing actual RF test equipment to figure out how good your enclosure really is. Also, exactly how bad an EMP will be in your precise location is a REALLY complicated question, even if you have the rest of that. RF engineering isn't called black magic for no reason - things like geometry, materials, and a whole lot more matter alot. A metal container will probably help (assuming it has no wires running in or out) enough, but most devices are designed with quite alot of tolerance to damage from high frequency RF. It isn't done for EMP protection, it's done for electrostatic discharge and EMI regulations, but for an unplugged device during EMP, that's really the parts you worry about. The low frequency parts of an EMP are mostly a worry for stuff with long wires or connected to the grid (which is long wires) which can act as antennas at those frequencies.

    Former USAF metrologist here. I did almost 20 years of metrology with 12ish years being in RF metrology. 100K for a portable spec an with reasonable specs is a pretty damn good deal. But we were doing stuff up into the 50Ghz range by the time I medically retired which kept our unit costs substantially higher.

    • @ccoder4953
      @ccoder4953 Před rokem +2

      Yeah, it's gotten pretty reasonable (for that sort of equipment). If you need 50GHz, Keysight has portable stuff that starts at $70k that can go there. If you don't need those kind of of frequencies, Siglent has some very well reviewed equipment, some of which is actually affordable to hobbyists (decent gaming PC sort of prices). And there's alot of newer equipment that isn't like the old boat anchors - it might not be a battery powered portable, but it's easy to pick up and move with one hand.

    • @tonymorris4335
      @tonymorris4335 Před rokem

      @@ccoder4953 yeah our issue was always the accuracies that we needed... frequency response/flatness was a specific one that was always tough when you went cheaper and more portable.
      Putting our consistent -10 DB signal in and then checking it you know every 200 meg they would all drift really badly at some point or another in the spectrum.
      If you just need one to do basic checks and looking for harmonics or signals you can get away pretty cheap. We rarely needed absolute RF power accuracy because every test we did needed an accuracy that required us to use a thermistor or power sensor but then we had to rely on the s accuracy to verify a signal generator all the way out to fifty for example.
      I'm guessing that these guys don't really need too much absolute accuracy since they only have one analyzer and they're not calibrating signals, only measuring for relative values. If they're off by three DB and measure - 30 instead of - 27 it's not going to change the outcome of their review when the other phone they're comparing it to would also be 3 DB off at the same frequency.

Just like Linus had to track down that Bolt through the means of the use of Resistance,it's the same method to track down that 1 Pesky Wire causing a Short !
