Got up early this morning to get my bath and all dolled up with my tiara on to watch trooping the colour. I was keen to see Princess Catherine after worrying about her for so long. She looked absolutely beautiful. She looked very healthy despite going through chemo. I hope she continues to do well with her treatment, and comes through the other side. Love and prayers❤ and prayers 🙏 to everyone going through cancer treatment.

We have a charity shop in my town. It was started in the late 90s by the local catholic church. It was manned my volunteers only. I used to be able to get some of the best deals ever there. Over the years, they began providing help to locals. Food bank, medical help, transportation, utility help, fire wood and so on. So the thrift store slowly became a "business". No more good deal and everything that is decent is sold on eBay. Professional managers run the place now and I rarely find anything there anymore. I wanted a small round end table for beside my recliner. I found one and they wanted $150 for it. Years ago it would have been $15 or so. So I rarely go there anymore. We used to also have several "antique" shops that were so great to go in and get lost digging around the different rooms full of treasures. Most of them have closed up as well. It is sad as I used to get a lot of enjoyment out of thrifting things for my home. Most items in my home have a story and I love that.

We had a Goodwill go in right next to an actual Church run charity shop.
Goodwill undercut the charity shop just enough that it affected business and the charity shop went under.
Once the shop was gone, Goodwill started slowing raising it's prices.
Now "Goodwill" has the gall to ask shoppers if they want to round up their bill at checkout, supposedly to "help their mission".
The cashier thought I was joking when I suggested that staff approach the CEO, who has one hella pay package and get him to donate.
It would be a better look than the one they are getting by currently nickel and dimeing people who are already having economic difficulties.

I donated a raft of silk tops to Goodwill post surgery when it left me with one arm paralyzed and I could no longer wear them. I couldn't put them on by myself and silk...thought I'd give back too since I'd shopped at thrift stores for my family for years when I was a struggling single parent.
The friend that drove me there went inside with me to look for some tops I could get on by myself and the tops I'd just donated were already being priced and put out to sell. Shocking to me to see were prices higher than I'd paid for them brand new! Equally as shocking were the prices on any clothing. She took me to WalMart where we found all cotton men's t-shirts for $4 each, much less than the prices at the Goodwill.

40 years ago when I stopped work to look after my babies, l was very grateful for charity shops to clothe myself and the children. Although I no longer have such a pressing need my occasional visits don't seem to yield such treasures. The reason I needed to buy myself clothes, was because the smart clothes I had, weren't suitable for crawling around on the floor after toddlers.

I worked for Goodwill from 2016 to 2020. It was the worst job I've ever had to take and stay at. Toxic, even. The best thing about the job was being the person who went through all the donations, sorted, cleaned, and priced all the doo dads that weren't clothing. I know antiques and I know vintage and the excitement of finding old treasures that were valuable to me (not everyone gets excited over a vintage diaper pail like I do) was what kept me going. Goodwill wouldn't allow us to buy anything we'd priced ourselves, nor were we allowed to buy anything unless we were off the clock and the item had been on the sales floor for an hour. There were cameras everywhere, and we were watched on a feed by corporate as well as our own store management team. So at least they had changed their policy of allowing their employees to have the pick of the donations by then. I still managed to buy some one of a kind (to me at least) items like an old steamer trunk, a cedar chest from the 30s and an antique chamber pot from the 1800s. That being said, I can tell you that by the time I left, Corporate had us looking for antique and vintage labels and manufacturers, and setting them aside to be up sold at their 'Boutique' store at headquarters. But they were also raising their prices on popular items like jeans and baby clothes. $10 for a pair of really worn hard blue jeans. I don't shop there anymore and I don't donate there either. I shop at Catholic Charities like St. Vincent De Paul. They do business like Goodwill used to, only they don't lie about selling rejected clothing overseas or hiring people with learning disabilities etc (Goodwill pays those people below minimum wage to do very menial dirty work only), and they don't pretend to wash the clothing like Goodwill does. They have a section up front by the registers where you can take for free, cans of food and day old bread. For FREE. I highly recommend shopping there. Scarves are only .99cents. When I left Goodwill their scarves were $1.99. Since they raise their prices every year, I'd bet those scarves are going for $2.99 now.

Sarah, thanks for that information and I agree with you completely. I've always liked Saint Vincent de Paul and now I understand why. IT was just a different feeling and I lived in Portland Oregon and I just adored that store. I used to find scarves for a quarter they were silk. THEY were very tiny . THEY were the type that you just put at your throat and tie a knot. Soon I will have an online store and start selling some of the stuff that I don't wear which is a lot.

@@SarahGreen523 Yes, the only thing holding me back is I don't even know how to do PayPal and I have to figure out how to manage the financial aspect of it and I don't want any returns. I don't know if eBay will even allow that. I really wish there were a course in how to sell on eBay. I remember decades ago when it was brand new people were giving courses informally-- although charging😊-- for how to sell on eBay. But now the people that do sell, all seem to know how because they're younger than me and very savvy. I'm very tech ignorant and I'm even not familiar with PayPal although I was told there is Apple pay and Google pay & there's lots of PAYS and they're all the same but I have to figure that one out. Also the last time, I knew someone who sold on eBay was probably 6 years ago and she did a very good trade and told me that as long as you make less than $40,000 off eBay, you would not owe taxes on it. I do not know if that's still the case. SO that is something very important I have to figure out. I thank you though for your encouragement.

Couple comments about Goodwill… disclaimer; I don’t know everything.
      1. It creates job opportunities for folks who would otherwise have trouble finding work - and it’s not just the stores. The guys who clean our work building are from Goodwill.
      2. Regarding the price of a t-shirt being the same at Target as it is at Goodwill, consider other factors such as quality, styles, and the environment. My sister loves getting vintage clothing at thrift shops in styles she can’t find new. The bonus is giving the clothes a second life and keeping them out of a landfill… personally, I’d prefer that to a cheap made in china shirt, which perpetuates the disposable clothing cycle. Also maybe consider sales - it’s been a while since I shopped at Goodwill but they used to deeply discount thing the longer they’d been there, something like everything with a certain color tag would only be $1, or sometimes everything you could fit in a bag for $5. Not sure if they still do that.

I used to LOVE thrifting, estate sales, charity shops & gttg good prices! I am on disability & it helped me AND the charities when I purchased items that I could resell for a little profit! Now I find that unless there is an error by those tagging/pricing the items, especially in charity shops , I can usually find it cheaper in EBay! I am so disappointed because I felt both the Thrift stores/charities & I could supplement our causes,( mine my household income). I have even seen items in places like the Hospice Thrift Stores find the highest asking price listings for an item & print the listings off & attach to that item. Imagine my surprise when I went to EBay only to find 10+ similar items much lower! I rarely can supplement my disability income now with reselling and not only did the small amount I made help with expenses but gave me such happiness in a at times painful, sheltered existence days normally 😥!

    Good morning, Sue!
I was never a big thrift shopper for clothing. I like to buy used books, mostly. When my daughter was younger, she enjoyed thrift shopping, especially when grunge was still a style. Now it isn't worth her time because there isn't much worth buying, thanks to the huge trend of resellers. They also go to stores like TJ Maxx, doing live streams, while their viewers claim items that are later mailed to them. It's a big business right now & people who are good at it can make lots of money. That's why some stores have such a sad inventory! There aren't any rules against it because the store is getting sales, so they don't care.
She still occasionally goes but says the prices are so high, it's not really worth the trip.
It's hard to imagine that thrift stores have such high prices that the people who really need to shop there can't afford it!
I never go to yard sales because I should have my own!!

Apologies in advance for writing a book here
Such a great video for me today! This whole resale racket, yes I said it, has been extremely frustrating me. Between the stores like Savers and also the charity stores such as St Vincent. Here are my biggest annoyances:
Cost going up in food, retail, etc. because of the transportation costs and overhead. Ok but why are costs going up at St Vinney’s , Salvation Army and the likes? They get the stuff donated, dropped off to them, and a lot of volunteer help. Why the sudden over the top price hikes?
About the surge in online designer fashion and accessories resale..As pointed out to me along time ago by a police officer friend a lot of that on line designer resale stuff-especially the stuff with tags is more than likely shoplifted. And that was before it was a huge thing.
Sorry for my rant..It’s just so frustrating to see what started out as a good cause for both buyer and reseller has turned into this.
    As always XOXO to Audie

Yes I know that yellow is for soldiers missing in action that never have been found even going back as far as Vietnam and who knows maybe World War II. I didn't actually realize it was for people who are having cancer until I began watching this podcast. Yes it is also being used by the sinus state for zionists who are still in Gaza. I'm not quite sure where the use of yellow came for and what is truly kosher and what is being co-opted by another group. I'm just saying because I really don't know how these things work. When Sue kept saying she was wearing yellow I hadn't seen her for a while and I didn't know what she was talking about. Take care. In Texas yellow is associated with the yellow 🌹 of Texas and it means a good thing. So there you go😊

I found them basically in the children's section and they just fit my head and they were so cute and now I find them at the dollar store. I wanted to send some to Lady c but then I thought&- hers r so nice she wouldn't like these but then again, I'm pretty sure some of hers are from the dollar store . IF you lookel at them up close ,they would be just all pretend jewels etc SHE does say straight up that only tiaras should be real jewels and everything else can be fake. SO there u go. 😊

I'm from South Africa, thrifting is so different here. We have many people who live on the breadline, one never needs to worry about who to donate unwanted goods to. We do have our RSPCA ( animal shelters) who run thrift stores too, but those have also become less reasonable in the last few years. We have car boot markets where you can sometimes find treasures ...those are usually folk who are really needing some form of income. We have local community WhatsApp chat pages and ours is very good, people either give or sell unwanted things on that. Love hearing about your little town and Audie!

Thought-provoking. For the most part, I avoid corporate thrift stores for shopping or donating. It has appeared to me that for some time, they are selling better quality items online & placing average items in their stores.
I donate goods to two independent religious thrift stores, a religious based, battered women's & children's center, and a wonderful foodbank that gives clothing to people in need. It took a while to discover these places, but I'm happy to help them because they do good work.

The so-so stuff goes to Goodwill now because I don't like the trend they have taken. Everything else goes into the trash as that is what goodwill does with it anyway.

Most Thrift stores have “volunteer workers.” Some paid/ some not because they get first pick of all the merchandise. It’s how they compensate for their time.
My mom volunteers for a Christian charity thrift store. The volunteers are responsible for pricing each others items for personal purchases. Name brand clothing & designers, art pieces, antique jewelry/furniture, etc. My hoarding mother gives everyone thrift store donated items. She gifted me an entire collection of a jewelry she “found.”
So if you want to sell for profit, you have to volunteer for it.

I worked as a paid charity shop manager, a big problem is that most of the (high paid) senior managers came from high street fashion retail and didn't understand the customers who shop in charity shops. The senior managers dictated minimum price lists based on what clothing sells for when it's new, not what the charity shoppers would realistically pay for it.

We live in a nice residential part of Toronto (north end far from the 'downtown') and my husband and I have actually found the very best 'bargains' at Yard Sales and also just walking the neighborhood and picking up 'discards'. We bought a gorgeous rosewood console type table at a Yard Sale for $30 and we found by the side of the road a discarded stone Urn (which was signed and numbered on the bottom) which we took home - it's beautiful. Last week, on a walk, my husband saw a discarded small and beautifully built small dresser - clean and like new. He came home got the car and went back and scooped it up. We won't take moldy or dirty items but we've gotten so many nice things over the years. This is Yard Sale season in our area so we will pick through those over the next few weeks. You never know...just ask the lucky buyers on the Antique Road Show!

The same in my neighborhood. At first I felt strange grabbing something up but I realized if I didn't do it fast it would be gone within minutes. THERE there was a really big round wooden table in very good shape as well as a long oblong table and both were made out of excellent wood and I knew I could only handle one so I took the oblong table. I do not have a car so I was dragging it for many many many many blocks and a young boy-- only maybe 8 years old but he looked like a 6-year-old he was so little &-he offered to help me which is very kind and very Christian of him. In Texas where I live I don't find any Christians-- I'll be quite honest-- except in church on Sunday but not when they're off of their duty! lol THIS little boy helped me carry this table-- @
a very long table out of solid wood --to my home, many many blocks from where it had been left on the side of the road. I went back moments later and the round table was gone. But that table would have been too heavy for him and me to ever have made it to my house. SO there you go😊

Sue, I’m a regular Just Chatting viewer but watched this episode. I agree with you that thrifting has changed! I no longer donate to Goodwill, nor buy there because their prices are the highest around. I switched to local charities, and more recently my hairdresser, who knows impoverished people in her church and will pass along clothing, purses, etc. When I buy, there’s a local thrift shop that doesn’t seem to mark things up. I recently wanted to replace some vintage Pyrex custard cups after my husband accidentally dropped 2 of them. (They shattered into smithereens!). I found some for $1 each, which I know is a bargain - and the profits are staying local. Good advice as always, Sue!

I got them sports equipment for a fraction of the price and if they decided they didn’t want to play cricket or go roller skating etc…then I hadn’t paid out much money. Over the years the prices have gone sky high which annoys me as the majority of the goods are donated!

Good afternoon Sue. I often change out buttons on my clothing. A great looking button can dramatically change the look of a garment. A few years ago I found a beautiful black cashmere sweater at a thrift store. I believe it was $10.00. Recent I purchased a cashmere sweater from an " up market" store, on sale of course, and the quality of the new sweater was so disappointing compared to that thrifted item. Quality is just going down overall. Cashmere, in my budget is a super, super splurge and I'm always looking for a good bargain. Like your hair band today. Much appreciation for all you do for us. Hey Sue. My daughter and I had a disagreement about what each of us thought about the reselling of items from thrift stores. She did not see my point at all, she said it's their money, they bought it, they can do what they want to with it. Yes she does have a point, but this is how I look at it. Thrift stores to me had always been a place where peaple that can't afford to shop at regular retail stores could maybe find something decent for their home or clothes for themselves or mybe kids. If resalers buy up all the things that are decent, then what is left for the ones that really need the things. I remember back in the 90's when my daughter and I was first starting out on our own. We didn't really have to much for our home and I didn't have a lot of money, I was unemployeed at the time. We went to a huge garage sell they have at the beach once a year. We were able to find most of what we needed for the house at low prices. I would hate to see how it would be if we had to do that now.

Donated stock, volunteer labour, discounted rent - not a bad business model. In the UK my beef is with books; most charity shops can't be bothered to rotate their stock and have a deal with World of Books to collect donated books to sell on ebay, Amazon etc. I'm sure WoB make a donation but many people use charity shops to cheaply buy reading material especially as libraries are closing faster than banks. It seems to be the closer the charity shop is located to the cause the more ethical the model. The hospice shops I visit still pass the sniff test but how long before a 'national' takes them over?
