I'm a 70 + woman who started drawing at 17, but life got in the way, kids, husband, then working full-time after husband became ex, and I have finally retired, remarried an artist, and I'm learning all over again. I don't care what other people draw, I'm doing my own thing and experiencing it all. I enjoy it, even if I'm not so great. Just keep going and don’t stop. I think your art is very good.

Hi there! I'm from India. I used to draw a lot as a child but somewhere the rat race of engineering, job, research, adulting etc killed my passion. Recently at a friend's wedding, I met her cosin who I was meeting for the very first time. She used to battle anxiety & to tackle it she started nandala art alongside casual doodling. Over the years she became quite good at it & her anxiety is manageable. Thinking of picking up my childhood hobby again. Art is therapeutic & your video reinforces that fact. :)

thank you for making this video, i too threw away all my sketchbooks from since i was a kid thinking i get rid of the idea of being an artist, and thats my biggest regret i wish i keep it for the sake of remembering how much i love drawing. no matter how long i put it off, eventually my heart longs and itch to draw and paint. now at 30, im picking up my pencil and paintbrushes again and realized my ability to draw will always be there, i just need to practice to get good at it. now i do art because my soul craves for it speaks for it, not because i want to be a successful artist, i have my own career, art is my way to destress and enjoyment.

You talking about not needing to justify and give reasons to do something we enjoy doing resonated with me. I'm an aspiring writer who took an engineering degree to keep body and soul together as I (try to) practice my craft on the side. Whenever I would share my dream of being a writer with my friends I'd always be met with a 'why?' As my goals were different from theirs, they naturally wanted me to explain my reasoning behind it. But having to justify what you so clearly know to be true in your heart is exhausting. Its so much simpler to just act it out. This video reinforced that idea. Thank you!

Young lady, I can't offer you anything that you haven't already discovered or experienced on your own. I believe that you have the right mindset for furthering your ambitions relating to drawing and painting. I too, "thought" that I was a good artist. I grew up loving water coloring and drawing. A long story short (that probably nobody wants to hear) is that because of my enlisting in the USN back in 77, I had the opportunity to get involved in art classes in Catania, Sicily (my first and third tours), then off to Yokosuka, Japan and continued my love of watercolor there. Many years later and after retiring, I traveled to Tbilisi and Kyiv and tried to paint again (through local classes). I learned much but always felt deficient in my skills and disappointed. I'm now going on 66 and arthritis doesn't allow me long hours of holding a brush (or pencil). So I say to you: take advantage of your limited time while you are able and wanting, for time will creep up on you and you may face your past with regret. Good luck!

Many artists engage in art because they enjoy getting lost in the creative bubble…skill acquisition and growth dont matter. It’s not about being good but just in engaging with the process and using art as creative expression of emotions and life experiences.

This speaks to me so much!
I've been drawing for 3 1/2 years, and it's been a roller coaster of emotions and changing motivations. I got caught up so much in the practice, and wanting to "get there", that I forget to take time to just draw things for myself and what I enjoy in the moment. Granted, I have made progress in skill - but I've felt plenty of doubt that usually caused me to put down the drawing utensil for a month or months at a time.

I am an absolute data-and-facts person and spend almost the entire day in front of the computer for my job. Since my family is similar, I was never introduced to drawing and creativity and never had the chance to explore it myself. Now, approaching 40, I’ve realized that I simply enjoy it-whether I’m good at it or not. I love the process, and I find the art of others beautiful and enjoy admiring it, so I just do it. As our daily lives become more stressful and computer-driven, I feel more and more that it would be beneficial for all of us to incorporate a bit more art, crafts, and creativity into our everyday routines. I want to give my own children many more opportunities to explore and try new things.

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. I began sketching and painting back in the 80’s. I painted with acrylics because it was during the wearable art craze and acrylic is washable. Recently, I found an old sketchbook from 1988 with a drawing of a rose that I love. There are other drawings too, but that rose was special though I don’t know why. I just know that I turn 70 tomorrow and now do watercolor and sketching. I plan to trace down that beautiful rose and watercolor it someday. I was so grateful to find this piece. Someone made the suggestion way back then to save all of your work and I’m glad I did. Excellent that you have some of your previous paintings. Take it as a gift. Learn from the experience and save every thing going forward. You’re still young and your art journey is far from over. Blessings to you! 💗Rita

Like music, drawing is a "primary art" that opens the door to many other arts that depend on it.
Drawing opens the way to painting, sculpture, photography and cinema, etc; not to mention all the friends we can make in these fields as we evolve.
Drawing and making music should be part of every child's education at school in my opinion ahah
Personally, I'm taking up drawing now that I'm over 30 : I'd encourage anyone who's having trouble getting started or getting back into it not to give up!

Dude, you look like a nice, graceful piece of art yourself! At least, in today's attire, exactly like one! My story is somewhat like this too.. I'd always admired the kids in my class who could draw.. and I wasn't able to. Once I learnt Engineering Graphics in my college, my confidence boosted up. As it used technical tools, and mostly straight lines, I was able to draw very well and often topped the class. I figured that I have the idea, and not much skill with fluent fingers. I purchased that viral course from Udemy, and went along for like 4-5 videos, I think. I haven't watched the rest till date. But those skills really helped me understand drawing a little better.
Today, if I look at something, I'm able to slowly copy the ratio to the page and slowly develop it into a rough sketch. I'm not quarter as good as you, but I'm confident. I don't draw as often, either. But each time I pick up a pencil to draw, I manage to make myself happy and surprise myself. Drawing is indeed a happy habit!
Thank you for this lovely video!

I can relate. I won some art awards when I was young and then stopped painting and drawing, believing I was nothing special. I let it go for 20 years before I once again picked up a pencil and started to draw. It lasted a while and in the last 20 years or so, I have picked up my sketchbook and then put it away again countless times. About 10 years ago, I got in with an artist crowd on Facebook whose sole aim was to be a professional artist. Many said my art was great & I should be doing this or that. I disliked the pressure and stopped drawing once again. Now, I’ve recently taken it up again at 56 years old. I’m trying to do art for the sake of it but find it hard. And I think I’m too old now to do anything with it. I’m yet to get to a place where I want to draw just because I can, not because of anything else.
Thank you for the video. It’s made me feel less alone in my endeavours. ❤😀

Thank you. I often feel pressure. Like, if I'm going to learn how to draw it has to be because I am going to show people, or become an artist. But I want to take that pressure off and remember that I want to learn how to draw simply because it is something I enjoy doing. I don't even want to draw something in a necessarily realistic way; I like to draw interesting faces of people I see, but in my own stylized way. So my goal is really to develop my style, and to learn how to draw in a stylized way but still in a way that you can tell whose face I drew. I've been practicing with a pen only as well, so I don't get caught up erasing and trying again and never finishing it.

    • @GraceDeGrace
      @GraceDeGrace  Před 3 měsíci +1

I think it’s okay to start on an iPad! Digital artists are just as valuable as traditional ones to me I think the choice comes down to your art goals. If you’re interested in doing something like animation, that is much easier done digitally while a goal like getting into a gallery tends to favor traditional art.
