Roger DeCoster is the god of MX.
Copy that…
When men were steel and ships were wood. Awesome!
😂
That man made motocross what it is today I’ve been a fan since 1968 .
No he didn't. The dictatorship EPA made Motocross what it is today. Now bikes are too expensive, too fast, and people are starting to end their life on the track.
This sport has never been so dysfunctional, and RD had nothing to do with that. The sport used to be better, and so were the citizens.
@@EarthSurferUSA lol stick to your skateboard
Out door motocross kicks ass. Stupid cross is deadly
Mr. DeCoster WAS my Hero as a young boy who Loved Motocross!
It was a Pure Thrill to watch Him Master His MUDDY-Craft, a True Legend, & I Kept all my Dirt Bike Magazines he was in!
As that last feller said, He is a god of Motorcross!!! 🤙🏼👊🏼🇺🇸👊🏼
My all time Motocross hero and the reason I still ride today.
The GOAT ! No team members there to care for him right after the race, like hand him a bottle of water and or a towel and pour water on him trying to cool him down. I have said it before and I will say it again ,,,,,, You had to be a MAN back then to ride a dirt bike yet alone race one !
My first hero as a kid.The reason I started on the TM.
Tm???? Before Roger. After Roger?
RM! 😂
@@chriskernan TM 1970s.Before the RM.DeCoster rode them.
My first bike was a used (need some work) TM125.
Same here
My first MX bike @ age #5 or 6, was a 1970 Indian 50cc..grey and black...still runs, keep it @my parents place.. That little ripper, produced some unforgettable great memories for me and my big brother.
I heard this story of DeCoster showing how to ride the “slow” Yamaha decades ago, but had no idea there was an actual picture of the occasion - awesome!
He was my inspiration as a motorcycle rider when I was a 12 year old kid. Total class act and a great ambassador for motorcyclists and Suzuki. Envisioned myself as being Roger on my Suzuki 50.
The greatest of all time 🏆
A 1968 DT-1 was my first motorcycle. Innovative in their day.
When the DT1 came out, I scoffed. I was basically a Bultaco rider and later on OSSA then Suzuki. Years later, doing some recycling work for a salvage operation, I got a DT1 engine to break down and I was surprised at how well it was engineered and how rugged it was.
I got a DT 3 whe I got my drivers license. Loved it , road it to school and to the track and trails. Wish I had kept it. They’re like gold now.
I have a cousin who is now 70 that owned a Yamaha DT-1 Enduro with a white gasoline tank. I bet he wishes he still owned that museum piece. 😊❤
He is very humble, I have met him several times.
That would have been great to meet him . We hung out at the neighborhood suzi shop and they had a mess of his videos running all the time . Fun times . :)
@@user-kh2yl6nn3l I met him at the can-am race in copetown ontario in 1972. He drove himself to the race in a dodge van. Very cool person not like the high dollar racers of today
yep, he was always known for his good personality and just all around coolness . :)@@holmes1956O
But! Have you been managed by him?
@@uni-byte 👎
I came of age when he was at the top of his game, and it's hard to describe how amazing he was. In a class alone, and all you had to do was watch one race.
Saw Roger de Coster (along with Joel Robert in 1972 at Calder in Victoria (Australia) in an International Motocross series. Great event. I believe he was given the nickname Roger de Foster because of his fondness for the amber fluid!
Gosh, that takes me back to the 80’s. I used to go and see the Mr Motocross series with Stephen Gall YZ400 and Anthony Gunter RM370 at Tivoli QLD. Think DeCoster/ Mike Bell came out about that time for a round of Worlds (or exhibition) that I saw somewhere in Brisbane…. Pretty lengthy career DeCoster had when you consider the injury rate!!!
I remember watching wide world of sports and he was racing a Suzuki at Carlsbad and one shock came off, awesome guy.
I remember. Roger is a legend in what he has done for mx. I miss those days. Remember Bad Brad Lackey, Gohber? good times..
Had to add Malcom Smith..
@@biophillie "Roger is a legend in what he has done for mx." Yes he is. So sad kids today don't know what a Legend is, and they give the label to any Tom, Dick and Harry today.
I was at that race! He finished 1st
Bet decoster now at 75 would still smoke everyone on a vintage bikes vs. there new bike.
Jett Lawrence would like a word
One of my favorite memories is seeing Roger and Heikki Mikola (sp?) banging bars at Honda Hills just east of Columbus Ohio. Fantastic track. Loved racing there. So so good.
I remember that story from wayback.. Many pros taught classes in their spare time..
The old bikes with 6 inches of travel were made for old tracks. When one of these bikes is restored and ridden on the modern tracks you find out real quick how obsolete they are. I rode the old bikes and later restored one. It would bottom out and beat you to death on the new tracks. We romance the past riders and pioneers of the sport and rightfully so. I bought a book on how to ride by Roger Decoster. He is a true legend. But motocross then compared to now is like night and day.
Real riding,No pansie knee pads, elbow pads,or chest rigs just pure hard core riding
The 1st bikes were made before the riding gear.
As a kid I didnt race motocross but rather was into desert racing, so we always idolized our favorite desert racers. But Decoster was still a legend and I did have the Schwinn Roger Decoster edition BMX bike for cruising around the neighborhood with my friends. I won many wheelie competitions aginst my friends on that thing!
I got to see Roger at the Trans-AMA in Tulsa in 71. I’d been racing for 4 years then, first scrambles then motocross. Roger is sill in the game, now director of team KTM.
I was there too.
@@TXH1138 a friend of mine is the head suspension guy for KTM and works for Roger. I sent them some black and white pics I took in Tulsa, and got a thanks back.
@@tedecker3792 I've been searching for a long time to find anything about the Tulsa race and there's just nothing out there. I took pictures but have moved to many times to know what happened to them. I was beginning to think I dreamed it.
I loaded up my mom’s Mercury and drove down from South Dakota with 5 of my MX buddies. Saw On Any Sunday at the Tulsa drive-in. Those were the days!
Saw Him first in 1975,Casale Monferrato, meta Him in Genova Bavari MXVcircuit(testing RIBI front forks)and come near my Home(Genova) for meeting with Engineer Valentino Ribi and again in Genova 's MX Indoor, December 1982.Great Gentleman and Humble Person. He made me feeling good, as I was the real Champion. Thank You, Mr. De Coster.
I had one in the early 70s,loved it ,rode it to work, rode it in the bush .
Back in the day DeCoster was king . He could do anything but walk on water .
You know what they say bout conspiracy theories, only a matter of time before that photo of Roger walking on water comes to light. I think he could prolly do it. HE IS THE MAN.
The only difference between walking on water, and walking in water, is how deep the water is. :)
HAHAHA . :)@@EarthSurferUSA
Great to hear that DT-1 story. I always wondered what the heck he was doing on that bike...
My hero as a kid. Carlsbad, 1974.
I remember watching him at this time, I started racing motocross in 1974, Suzuki TM-125
I saw Roger at Sears Point around 76. A one time event. Fantastic
I won a race on a '75 YZ360B , in the classic scrambles. Had some time off and switched to a KX500 ' Brand new bike' in '99 . Never won a race on the green bike. Too much power and not much fun on the shorter MX tracks
Still got it in my shed. Thanks for the video.
Invetor of the 82 up CR dirt bikes. The man. 👍
I Did Not Know This But I Remember Bruce Brown Talking About Him In, 'On Any Sunday' 52 Years Ago. Thank You.
There's a name I haven't heard in a while.
I remember him well as a fellow Scrambler rider.
Only difference, I was a crap rider, but we had fun.
I think it was the MCA.
Happy days
lol, I think it was the AMCA
The first year they came out we watched a demo across from the dealership where it was ridden up a 20 foot tall boulder and down the other side. 😮that was amazing to kids used to street scramblers!!
I remember my friends Mongoose BMX bike with the Moto Mag rims had Rodger Decoster forks !
There must be a great documentary on Roger......l have to find it. I was riding small bikes in the 80s when l was a kid but my dad got an 83 4stroke 250 yamaha when l was 9 or 10 and l couldnt stand up with it so dad had to hold it up while l got on and started riding and when l stopd he had to do the same thing obviously but lve never had a brand new bike. The closest to new was in 2002 l got a 2000 ktm 250 sx 2 stroke. And l loved that bike more than any others id had before. But im ultra nostalgic about the bikes l had growing up. My best friend l rode with had a screaming eagle.....a 97 cr 250 with the aluminum frame which l hate aluminum frames. Too rigid for me. But he also had a 94 or 93 YZ 500 . Back when tney were pink. Now that bike was so comfortable.....the seat was like the softest bed ever and the suspension was amazing. So it was already 10 years old when he got it but it just never stopd pulling. Full disclosure....l have never rode any other 500s and lve never rode a 450 4stroke. Rode or ridden......im not sure which is the proper word but anyways. My whole life.....nothing has ever excited me like riding a dirtbike and to this day that still stands true.
Du vrai moto cross dans la boue avec des durs a cuir 👍❗
I saw Roger race twice at the AMA Winter Nationals at the Orlando Sport's Stadium track...i am going to guess it was '70 and '71 or possibly '71/'72...it looked like man against boys. He was definitely above the Americans at that time.
DeCoster was one of the best ever. Quite possibly the GOAT. Hard to say with the technology today. I would ride my Honda Elsinore for 30 minutes and would be beat to shit. I could go further, but I'd be slower.
In league with Roger was Joel Robert who rode 250s. Joel's physique was so perfectly matched to riding motocross. He used minimal effort from sit-to-stand on a machine and was so strong and quick. I rode two meetings during the Trans-AMA '67 tour (sponsored by Edison Dye, Husqvarna importer) with Joel and Roger who we had supper with on one evening with the promoter in Sedan, Ks. Dave Bickers was the third CZ team rider that year and they were amiable fellas to talk shop with.
Hey, I rode one in the Barstow to Vegas race in 71’ and survived! Barely.
My first off-road bike.
L'époque où le moto cross était dans la boue et vrais circuits 👍
Watching this and wandering if the legend Nicky Hayden ran #69 paying homage to the legend Roger or was he just being a silly kid. I never knew this was Rogers number but now that i do the question remains. Long live legend Roger Decoster and RIP Nicky, you are very much missed by millions.
My man Nicky.
That is why he is called 'The Man'.
I got pumped on motocross and rode my stock 360 Yamaha in a race in 72, all adrenalin and not enough talent. Still riding a Yamaha at 69. A 1986 it 200
I believe I had a model of that bike.
De Coster...... legend
The Man!
Roger and all the other Europeans came to Tulsa in the early 70's and raced a track in old strip pits. It was awesome, but I can't find any info about the race.
And they call Carmicheal the G.O.A.T, pfft!
RC is def in the pecking order.
@@knifelyfe6565 RC is one of the best, but the era in which the accomplishments were achieved has relevance.
@@tomdoe4295 100% agree.I rode a TM in the 70s because of DeCoster. He was my idol.Saw him ride two times in Texas.
@@knifelyfe6565 Those early TM's were ranked the worst MX bikes of all time. I had a TM 400 I raced it was awful.
@@bultacowally The RMs were a whole different bike.I started on a TM 125 in the novice class in the 70s.There were still some Texas guys who could go fast on the 400s and didn't get hurt.
he works for suzuki now in super cross , I saw him on TV one time
I saw him race the Trans-Ams at Red Bud. He won the second moto (if memory serves me correctly) He was so smooth, he didn't look that fast...kinda like Jett.
I saw him at RedBud in the mid to late 70's. Saw him last year at MXON. Team Manager.
The video in the mud (sand) is from Puyallup, Washington.
Hero
Was it DAVID BOWIE on those bikes.?
Those motocross bikes were no more than an enduro back then ..
CZ, Husqvarna, Maico, and Suzuki bikes were all specially made for motocross by the factories. Yamaha did stretch the DT1 engine to fit their needs but it's relationship to the enduro engine faded away in a few seasons.
When men were steel and suspension was wood.
Som boy Coster 👍👍👍👍👍👍🤛
Number 69?
Gees get some more protection
the good old days of the Belgian Motorcross... I was a kid back then... and I loved it...
now its not even allowed anymore because of the green wackos.... they destroyed all motorsports... because they hate people having fun...
Too bad you can’t hear the screams of those bikes.
That was before Ted Bundy quit smoking.
FULL OF BROKEN BONES AND METAL PARTS FROM MX...
