I've been an Oregon fan for more than 50 years and saw my first Civil War game at Hayward field. During these earlier (to me) years, Oregon had some wonderful players that were fun to watch. We all remember Mel Renfro and Dan Fouts, Bobby Moore and the "Flying Dutchman" Johnny Kitzmiller. They were great players but they were playing with just a so-so team. Oregon many terrible seasons in the 60's and 70's, yet I and many others stood, uncompromising as Oregon fans. In the 80's a change came to Oregon football. This didn't seem like the same 'ol Ducks. Instead they were winning a good portion of there games. Coach Rich Brooks had some good seasons but they got even better in the late 80's when he led the Ducks to four bowl games. When Mike Bellotti came in as coach in 95, the Ducks were a primed team looking for wins. They did just that as Bellotti took the team to 12 bowl games in 14 years at the helm. Those years with Bellotti coaching probably had the greatest impact on the team in it's history. Because of the winning, many of the best young players were now looking at Oregon. This was also the time when fans could feel a real change in mindset of the team. Oregon was a team to be reckoned with. No one knew what would happen when Bellotti retired and the fans were questioning the decision to bring up offensive coach Chip Kelly. Those questions were dismissed quickly as coach Kelly guided the Ducks to the four best seasons in school history, including four major bowl games which took the Ducks to the National Championship in 2010. The Ducks, with coach Mark Helfrich after signing a new contract with the school, are one of the select few who continue to be ranked in the top 10. Oregon offers some of the best training in the nation, with state of the art facilities and top notch trainers and experts to help with every player's conditioning. Now and forever, Go Ducks!
