The very definition of a “captive audience” … the actual inmates of Folsom Prison!

This was recorded at Folsom Prison not far from Sacramento California. This Prison is only about 8 miles from my house. We used to go there to the Prison gift shop were the prisoners actually worked in it some amazing things for sale.

That "crowd" is all prisoners at Folsom Prison. Hence their enthusiasm for the "I shot a man in Reno"... more than one of them had probably done exactly that. 😵

In 1956, when Johnny was on tour with Jerry lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley, this was called Rock and roll, and more specifically, The Sun Records Sound.

Steve Earl pointed out after being in prison himself that the key sound to this version is the concrete and steel. It creates a huge reverb sound on top of the reverb they used.

Cash wrote the song while in the Air Force in Germany, based on a movie he saw. It was on his debut album. (BTW, it seems unlikely you'd be serving in CA for a crime committed in NV.)

You are a well spoken, open minded young man. Passionate, empathetic, perceptive; all excellent character traits to develope and maintain. Just don't be so open minded you allow other opinions to echo in your skull until you can't hear yourself; always think, always reason, always double-check. Worse punishments my grandpa gave me were when I agreed with him without thinking or repeated his opinions without having my own reasons for coming to the same conclusions. He believed every man should think for himself, but heed the caution and advice of one's elders, consider their words while musing on what you feel, think, believe, and why you do so. The only time a man should act instead of think is a violent fight/life-death battle where freezing up causes most deaths, when that happens you decide what needs to be done in a split second and focus on doing that with all you have.
