I've heard this interpreted many times over the years. French versions and all. As a musician, I have to say that this performance enlightens my ears. They are focused on the very playful composers antics with flutes, rhythms and harmonies of all kinds. The musician is top notch in all respects.

I wish all of the Markey Psallite recordings could be re-released on CD!

Brilliant. !!! Wonderful instrument. Glad you could feel like taking your time. There is a ancient melody here and yet Marcel composed these variation with a little sense of dramatic humor. Remember this… his students. Listen to the room. Each time, each year. This is one of the Great Master. Have a little fur every time you play it. Enjoy. Noel. Sent with love. CVD.

Surely Marcel Dupré along with Olivier Messiaen were the greatest composers for the organ since the days of J.S. Bach. A problem today is that so few people are able to appreciate usic of this brilliantly dramatic calibre most congregations would run you out of town on a rail, if you were able to perform it for them. Markey most certainly was one of the flashiest performers who ever ever lived.

+Hyramess Hiramess I agree with you 115%. GOD... WHAT a gift he had and what a gift he have left to us. May there always be students (of the Master) who rise to the occasion. From what I gleaned form these great teachers is that in their heart of hearts, they want their students to be even better than they were. What fun; what pure Joy... ever... in ascension. !! CVD

You actually think that the ink messy ain threw at some lined paper is music? Really? Try to sing or whistle it. what he wrote isn't even music other than the most strict definition. Trash. Try listening to some real fronch music. Masters like Franck, Widor, Vierne, Boellman, and hundreds of others who wrote music that could be enjoyed, sung and whistled byt he common man instead of elitist snobs.

robert shaw I see you have nothing more than a most basic understanding of music. The requirement that music be considered music only when it can be whistled is beyond stupid. Messiaen wrote music that is beyond the comprehension of simple melody, and should be understood as something complex. To call it trash just because you can't whistle it is incredibly infantile and shows very little regard or professionalism in an analysis of music. It's unfortunate that a 17-year old is more open to the writing styles of various composers, and people who I assume are "educated" dismiss something they find difficult to play or interpret as "trash".

robert shaw The fact that you even need to call Messiaen 'messy ain' makes it seem (or maybe even indicates) that you are not even mature, which also explains why you for some reason think that you have to be able to whistle or sing something for it to be music. Try to sing, or even better, whistle Widor's toccata. That's also pretty hard, isn't it?

The organist is dexterous, accurate and metronomic. I am a little surprised for I have heard markey perform with much more feeling. The organ is gutless, brilliant owing to a superabundance of Mixtures and lack of Reeds. This is French music and it is impossible to do anything more than play the notes on an organ like this. Compare this to a performance on an A.C-C organ and the difference is shocking. You can not make a silk purse from a sows ear.

I would agree to an extent: I don't think this is the ideal organ for either Dr. Markey or Dupre. However, Markey's playing is--as it always was--clear, clean, and musical.

  •  Před 5 lety +5

I think the organ is unsuitable to this music.

If this is the only organ one has at his disposal, then one must go with it. In the right hands anything is possible. The end of this performance is worth the wait.
