The Monkees contributed to a happy childhood for millions.I could never thank them enough for that.
...well, the creators of the first manufactured band did, anyways........the Monkees themselves were just 4 kids answering an audition for a TV show, rather than 4 kids getting together to start a band. But, they had some good songwriters and some good toe tapping records.

Yes.Couldn’t believe that Stephen Stills was a consideration to be one of the Monkees!😂
My dad loved the monkeys we all sat to gether and enjoyed this great BUNCH of guys!
I was a Monkees fan from day one. As an adult, I worked in the music biz with A-listers. Nesmith was not a jerk - he was protective of his family, his private life, and his creativity. He knew he was an expendable commodity. He tried to save his soul and earn a living. Add groupies, death threats, and loss of creative control over his songs - he got cranky. Because Nesmith could think outside the box, we have music videos and a whole new genre of comedy that is duplicated, even today. Maturity mellows us. Mike Nesmith is outrageously creative and an awesome nice guy. Good enough for Zappa - good enough for me!
One interview with him on TV some years back, he was a bit pompous which was disappointing. No more a fan of his.
@@TM-rv5ke i have few Nesmiths country rock albums from the 70s,shame these records are not more recognized while Gram Parsons became CULT figure
Very well said!!! 👍
I've always loved Mike and I always will! God Bless him!!!
He is an amazing, extremely intelligent, creative and talented man ... always has been and always will be!! 💙 MICHAEL NESMITH 💙
Best interview ever was when a Sirius announcer was speaking with Tom Petty and Tom mentioned how much he loved Herman’s Hermits and The Monkees. The poor announcer did not know what to say and blurted out “It’s true when they say you should never meet your heroes”. Say what you want, both bands had great songs and a solid production team behind them. They created several songs amongst them that have stood the test of time. If their music was good enough for Tom Petty, it is surely good enough for me.
Many people love the Monkees. I saw them twice in concert in 1967 in Detroit.
The girls in the audience were screaming the same as if they were at a Beatles concert. They are hugely popular.
RIP Michael, Davy, and Peter.
Condolences to our beloved Mickey.
it's a great band with 4 great personalities and performers. I love them. From Italy
Thanks, Monkees. God bless every one of you.
After being a fan for over 50 years, I just heard this song for the first time. Thanks for sharing.
R.I.P. Peter Tork(1942-2019).
@Wayne Pitty wow! Is there really a heaven? I thought it was a silly notion created by religious nutcases who believe the most ridiculous stories, no matter how silly and unlikely.
Martin Williams WOW! Are you really that much of a sour schmuck who could’nt help but try to spoil the positive comments put to such an enjoyable video. Whether there’s a God or not, you can’t prove there isn’t one either..

John 3:16-21
[16]For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
[17]For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
[18]He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
[19]And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
[20]For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
[21]But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
It's Tali I have some LP 's and CD of the Monkees I loved there humor they made people laugh through there fun and zany show that will all ways be remembered for years to come. They were so talented & Funny. I feel for Mickey that he lost his band friends he will all ways remember them and miss them. 💞
Gone but never forgotten! Miss all the talented artists we've lost since 2000! 😢
I ALWAYS LOVED THE NESMITH SONGS. HE WROTE 30 WHILE IN THE BAND. HIS AND MICKS HARMONY'S WERE GREAT.
I have not watched the Monkees in decades and at first I didn't see Michael in that older gentleman on stage, but then he started talking. It's not just the voice, but the cadence that is pure Michael Nesmith.
I was there that night. It was magical. When Mike said this, we all cheered and a few tears were shed. Love these guys.
I was lucky enough to be born in 1958 and everyday after school enjoyed 4 very talented, down to earth young men that brought me many many wonderful moments in my life...thank you boys you were far more loved than you know, and your contributions will eventually be recognized.
Just would like to go on the record as being once a kid on the fringe of the madness of 1968 and the Monkees helped me feel accepted, socially integrated and cheerful. Heartfelt thanks.
I was born at 1956 , so I'd seen Monkees TV Show, and got All Albums and Singles. They are my Most Memorial Group. They get Old and me too. I Like Mike's Songs ,so This Movie make me Happy!
I had such a crush on Mike when the Monkees came out, I'm 61 and still a big fan of the Monkees. Their music will never die
I had a crush on Mike as a 7 year old Monkee fan. His music was above the others.
@@79goldmaster1 Mike actually wrote some of their songs, and for me his voice was the best. He really could sing so well. I thought he had the most talent of the group for sure.
Mike Nesmith has the most emotive voice of the lead vocalists. Great singer
Rest in peace. Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith. I still have the ticket on my phone from when I saw Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz at the Majestic Theater in Dallas Texas on Thursday April 16, 2020 at 8 pm. After this show, I emailed Mike and Micky and let them know that I really enjoyed getting to see them. Also, I emailed Micky Dolenz in December and told him that I really enjoyed getting to see him and Mike Nesmith at the Texas Trust CU theater in October. Also, a few Sundays ago, Me TV 55.1 showed episodes of the Monkees tv show all day long. I really enjoyed getting to watch those!!!
I like in Grand Prairie and I’m 69 so you know the monkees were my favorite back in the day. Wish I could have seen them when you did. I used to wear a wool cap just like Michael and had my belt buckle on the side like Peter. Thanks for the memories 🤗
God bless them all, 66 and still love them. Micky must be broken hearted being the only band member surviving. I remember him in elephant boy, way before the Monkey’s ❤❤❤❤
It's been my pleasure to have had the honor of interviewing Davy, Mickey and Peter on my national radio show. Only Mike refused to come on.
The Monkees were a much better group than they're often given credit for!
@@jameslatimer1432 To be honest, the beatles where on a tier of their own with how much they innovated music. Monkees are close tho.
@@trumpetperson11 well the Monkees were created as a TV SHOW about a make believe rock band to actually compare to the Beatles. No mistake, the BEATLES were a legend. They had their inner squabbles and fights etc, but they managed to created GREAT MUSIC, GREAT songs. They were the tops during that era. but something funny happened with the Monkees.. even though they did not all play their own instruments at first.. 3 of them had a GREAT singing voice.. all but Peter. sort of like Ringo of the beatles.. talented but not great singers. but they started making these songs.. the songs were written I believe by Boyce and Hart and others. But they sang them very well.. eg The last train to clarksville and I'm a believer, Paupa Jeans blue with Mike Nesmith and many others.... people started seeing them as a REAL band and in many people's eyes, they became just that.
I absolutely agree. I'm an 80's kids (82). The Monkees were my dads generation. My dad had their records playing often and I remember watching the TV show, I believe on MTV, 20 years after it originally aired. The Monkee's have been a part of my life since the beginning.
It is VERY heartwarming to see guys in their 70's still rock and rolling! Gives hope to us all.
Yes it is ,..except to most of the assholes who criticized them for what they did or tried to do....at least they got some fame out of it....they din't play my kind of music ...but I give them credit for what they accomplished.
They accomplished nothing. Other artists wrote their songs and other musicians recorded their songs. The Beatles cartoons were more authentic
so- the Beach Boys never performed on any of their albums. Does that diminish what they did? The Monkees performed live for decades. They all played their instruments. Mike Nesmith wrote many great songs. Your reasoning is totally absurd.
God Bless Peter, sleep with angels and rock forever with the stars, I grew up with your music, tears will be shed but you will live in our hearts forever. MK
it's not all about staying young sexy and perfect. it's also about aging and getting warmer and deeper as fine wine. The benefit of age is getting more soulful and philosophical. youth appreciates and strives for the qualities of maturity. and the mature look back with nosalgia at the wasted times and opportunities of youth. And so, living life is a double-edged sword.
🌍 People spend half their life wanting to be older and the other half wanting to be younger
Mike was always my favorite. R.i.p. Mike, Peter and Davy. Keep on keeping on Mickey, we love you, we loved you all.
What a great songwriter! Much respect to all of them. No one uses augmented or diminished chord anymore.
The birds the bees the Monkees was such a diverse album. I loved it so much as it came out. To hear this cut sung live by Michael was truly a delicious treat. I'm 62 now vibrantly alive enjoying the hell out of the memories of the Monkees... ;)
Ah, Michael, thank you for that utterly inimitable voice! Where would the music industry be today without his ground-breaking Rio and its film clip???
The Monkees rocked my childhood and made it great
Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork are awesome muscians. Mickey Dolenz were accomplished actors who learned to be muscians. Headquarters is an AWESOME album.
Micky did have a band before the Monkees called Micky and the One Nighters.
Kathleen Wippel Yes, as most actors once were both of musicians, and acting. Tired of hearing he never touched an instrument before the monkees. The logic for some, is they asked 4 bums on the street, to pretend to be musically inclined, for a tv show.

MICKEY had a great vocal range, better than many of that time. All four blended quite well, too.
I Love The Monkees. Us 3 girls had a dance we would practice in the front yard for weeks. It was a Great time. God bless RIP Peter and Davy Jones are in Heaven. We Miss you and The Monkees
I've always loved Mike Nesmith songs, his songs and Micky's vocals. I love hearing this stripped-down straight from the heart version of Tapioca Tundra...just beautiful!

Holy shit!!! Are we that old?! Holy shit, I just looked in the mirror..... Ya, we are THAT old!!!
I was born the year that they broke up and it takes something like this to remind us how old we really are.
Man, Nesmith did not age that gracefully did he?
Well, he does look like a man in in his seventies which, of course, he is.
Happens sneakyquick!!!!! I'm still in denial ?!? but all the old rockers are fallin' fast!
I watched this show every week. I still remember the opening song.
Mike is a class act. Very talented.
Mike wrote so many Wonderful Songs,Ahh Tapioca Tundra!!Thank you Michael. Micky, I Just love you.. 💙💙🥰
Unforgetable! The Monkeys always in my heart ♥ .
Man it's hard to believe that was Mike Nesmith. I grew up in the 60s and of course loved the Monkees and everything that they produced: the great music, the cutting edge pop TV show, and the Monkees fashions - including Mikes toque that set him apart as kind of a rebel in my mind. (hey! I was a 10 year old boy! he looked cool to me!) Seeing these guys now is really bitter sweet and a reminder of how quickly our lives can go by and how, like Thomas Wolfe wrote, "you can't go home again." Still I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
I saw them in concert as a very young boy. I think I was 9 year old or so. I have always loved their music. The Monkey's were much better than they got credit for being. I love the music from that era.
Mike & Micky sound the same great times.
I still listen to the Monkees, and Mike's solo work. I love his song "Joanne"
Aging is a Beautiful process...I wish every human being could experience it.
And I understand. I wish every human bean could, too, Mr.All it know Tony B
Yes, I totally agree. You are blessed if you get a chance to reach old age. Many don't get the opportunity. These guys still have it and I' m so hoping for a 'Good times' part 2.
Yes, youth indeed is wasted upon the young... Only in the beauty of watching one's own body fall apart, item by item, virility to impotence, continence to depends, toned flesh to wrinkles, keen education and insight to forgetting where the front door is, can life's glory be fully assessed. Oh what a world. Enjoy!
No, it's actually a horrible process. I have arthritis in my lower back and it's killing me. Trust me aging sucks.
Thanks Michael. Some of us 'got' it.
We got to enjoy the Monkees tv show in first and second grade ('66-'67-68), and what a big thing it was! We were so well entertained growing up back then!
Mike's twelve string Gretsch so impressed me I went on later in life to buy one!
Great memories of them each time I pick up my Gretsch.
Thank you men. You helped make my grade school days sweet memories!
Wow, what a difference 5 years made between this and the last, last concert 11-1-21. RIP Nez 😔

Always loved the Monkees. Had dropped out of school and was working full time 6 days a week at 14 and took off on Mondays so I could watch the Monkees. In fact the 1st song I ever learned to play the chords all the way through the song was Door Into Summer.
50 years later and still sounding as great as ever. It's great to see people who are great at what they do and thoroughly ENJOY it.MONKEES,FOREVER!!!!! YEH,MIKE MY FAVORITE!!

Sadly, when that time comes, many of us will no longer be around for you to share it with us. Thank you Micheal and Mickey for sharing this moment with us. Davy and Peter, you are truly missed.

Rich Dart is so much fun to watch as he sings word for word , every song. Enjoys himself so much!
Thanks guys, you gave my childhood good memories.
wow. takes this 60 old back a few years. thank you all for the music, the tv show, it actually kept me alive there for a minute. real life back then was a real bitch, and the few minutes of fantasy was heaven for me personally. I met Davy and Micky down in Florida once. many years after the show, but I was thrilled beyond belief. Monkee's forever!
I always loved Mike Nesmith the best.Thank you.
I saw Micky Dolenz on Broadway in Elton John's Aida and he was excellent.
I adored the Monkees but adored Mike Nesmith more , that was wonderful :)
The Monkees introduced me to music, a debt I'll never be able to repay you guys are awesome!
So sad to see 3 of 4 gone now. Davy was local to me, and the entire local community took it hard when he passed away. RIP Davy, Peter, and Mike. Hang in there, Mickey.
Don't recognize this guy without a skull cap! Thanks for all the memories boys. Y'all done good!
I remember in '68 hurrying home (hitch-hiking) from St. John's HS/Toledo, got a hair cut enroute, did my academic homework, and then watched the Monkees TV debut with family. Dang good stuff, boys! Stupid as can be, but very entertaining!
Yes they originally called Mike Wool Hat instead of his name. It was his trademark for him.
I can't believe this song was written by Mike Nesmith. I totally love it , so many great memories from songs just like this one. This song shows the diversity of the sixties era, so many writers and performers were old enough to experience so many changes of great music in our past. This song calls out the roaring 20's and also brings us up to times at that period to now. A Classic...!!
I something like 10 to 12 years old when they came on the scene. They were fun to watch, the songs were catchy and will remain part of the soundtrack of my life. They were called THE PRE-FAB FOUR by critics. But does it really matter how they got together? If something is good it's good. That should be enough. There will always be a soft spot in my heart for these very good men.
Thanks for posting this.
Keep On Keepin’ On, Micky.🌹
Beautiful, I love this version of Tapioca Tundra! Thanks Mike and God bless!
I have every album that Michael ever put out . one of the best song writers ever!
Mike has no financial need to support the Monkees. But his loyalty to the original band keeps him coming back. He has the wherewithal to buy all of their records. He was the most talented musician in the Monkees. Keep on going on Mike. You are definitely a not has been. But a very talented musician and businessman...
He was not that great of a musician. Sorry. He STILL plays like a beginner.
None of these guys should have any financial concerns considering how successful they've been
Betsy, you DO know that Nesmith skipped many Monkee related events, right?
This would have been Peter Tork's final live show, not Mike's.
Peter passed over afterwards. I saw him perform in 2006 at a Rock n Roll Concert in Youngstown, OH. He performed alone. Loved them all......
I love you mike thankyou for all the memories in my life born in 1964 love the Monkees show as a kid
I can't believe Peter York is gone! Now there is only two left. We miss you both, Peter. And Davy.
I'll tell you , I saw the Monkees a total of 4 times, The first time, my Aunt took me and my sister to go see them. Those years, I couldn't ell you one song they did. All we heard was girls screaming constantly. Many many years later, they came to Pind Knob in Michigan. I went to see that. The next year, they came back. I saw them one final time at the Fox theater thinking it's not going to be the same without Davy. I thought they can't do :cuddly toy" because that is sung by him. I thought of a few more too. But they did do cuddly toy and it sounded good. And Mike was back so they did you just might be the one and a revamped version of sweet young thing. That concert turned out to be the best of the 4.
Yeah, sadly in this day and age a song like "Sweet Young Thing" sung by an older guy would raise some eyebrows, to say the least. I wonder if Ringo still sings "You're Sixteen" in concert these days.
I saw Peter Tork play in a small local rock club back in the early 80's. He had a backup band and it was billed as "Peter Tork and the Monkees". (No other Monkees though) I remember him playing Bach's Invention in F on the keyboard. He was a pretty good musician.
Once had DW Washburn on 45 RPM. As I recall the flip side is "It's Nice To Be With You".
Great to see Michael on here. Such a great musician. Always loved The Monkees. Thanks for uploading such valuable document.
God, so gifted Micheal, shame it took so long for you all? Love you! Dave, NJ

This year my dream came true when I met my fave Monkee Micky Dolenz at the Beatles Convention in Liverpool. I had a wonderful time. Thank you Micky for the memories.
Met Mike Nesmith in Texas a number of years ago. He was the friend of a friend..cool dude, laid back and humble..turned me onto Celis Beer [a Texas jewel]
Love the part Mike plays the guitar. Tapioca Tundra.
Thanks for posting, did not realize they did their last concert in 2016. WoW
Mickey Dolenz is Rock and Roll royalty. I got to meet him at a star studded screening of "Detroit Rock City" a few years back. I had come up to the film's writer, who I had worked with, and was telling him how great, funny and enjoyable the film came out. He was chatting up some cool looking dude in the lobby after the show. This cat was tall, had a long pony tail, was dressed head to toe in all black, and was as relaxed an' cool as a jungle cat. I was half-way congratulating my friend when my eyes strayed to this dude in black, and I realized ...it was Mickey Dolenz!
I'd worked in Hollywood for years by then, met all kinds of great folks, but suddenly... I started sweating, and tripping over my words, I was getting star struck! I'd worked with David Fincher, Rob Zombie, Ozzy, and many others...yet this was Mickey Dolenz: an idol from my childhood! Plus, Micky looked so awesomely cool, and he was politely letting me get my congratulations out, knowing this was a very big night for my friend (as it was one of his first big writing gigs that went all the way to release) and didn't need to hog any spot light. Real Class, this guy. I shook hands and left, an' Micky was so cool he did nothing to make me feel awkward, and smiled and nodded to me ( a stranger) though I could tell he knew I was starting to completely geek out over his presence. I'm sure he's had it happen so many times, he's an expert at making folks feel relaxed. Class-Act that Mickey Dolenz!
Tapioca Tundra, one of the best songs ever recorded
Love that song!! I always have. "The Birds, The Bees and The Monkees" is such a good album. I still have it. I am 55 years old.
I'm 69, and still trying to decide what I wanna be when I growup!!!
Good ol' Papa Nez... actually, I found nothing wrong with the original version of "Tapioca Tundra". But it's good to see him up there doin' it his way.
I am stunned to see Dr Hawking playing banjo
Yes, he changed his field of study from physics to neurology and cured himself after 5 days of study.
Hey...the banjo player looks a lot like Peter Tork. Ah...I just read the intro...it IS Peter. Man....age sure beats the Hell out of us, doesn't it?
That was a good song back in the day. It was rocked up. The Monkees were amongst the greatest music groups of all time. So many great songs. Writers, producers,. but they sang and brought soul to them. Mike wrote great ones too.
Rest In Peace, Dear Mike.🥀
Good to see Mickey belting out those vocals. Good job!
Sounds like you got personal. Anyway, he's been crying all the way to the bank.!!
A love song to the fans....Their talent, genius and gratitude is what has made them so extraordinary to the once "kids like me"....It doesn't get any better than this, does it?
for those of us growing up in those glory days they were the real thing and then they spent the rest of their lives living up to the hype and I respect them for that because that time did belong to and was part of us. It's part of me still at 63.
Mike...always the class act...
You know what sucks? Being a young dude and continuously getting your heart broken by your favourite singers retiring and dying
Say what you will but I'll forever be in debt to Nesmith for helping bring Repo Man to the world years ago
These guys were legends. Highly underated as musicians and vocalists.
Shirley, I agree with you INFINITE PERCENT. As I replied to someone else, if you saw VH-1's "Behind the Music," Micky Dolenz had clarified, "The Monkees were NOT ALLOWED to play their own instruments" during their prime. There's a HUGE difference between not being permitted and not having the ability, though I do know that Micky did have to take drum lessons for his part on the Monkees show...I've heard different versions about whether he was "forced" to take lessons--according to Eric Leifkowitz's book "The Monkees' Tale"--or whether he decided himself that it was in his best interest. I'll tell you that after reading the Leikowitz book that I just mentioned some 30+ years after purchasing it, I've noticed some critical remarks from the author...was it his job to tell history or critique? An example of this is when he mentioned the song "She Hangs Out" as "perfectly suited for (Davy)Jones' limited vocal abilities." As far as I know, Leifkowitz wasn't an expert as far as one's musical abilities. As a singer and musician, yes, I'd say that Davy's singing was more in the baritone range while Micky's range was wider: he could definitely be a tenor but had a wide vocal range. Between 1986 and 2011, I'd see the Monkees--Davy, Micky and Peter--NINE times and each time, I'd think, "And back in the 1960s, those critics slammed them for being untalented?" Oh, I also believe that Peter played about 6 different instruments. I think the Monkees should be inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.
COME ON! Have you ever been to a concert or seen live music? They are below average musicians. Honestly seen guys at Pot Belly do better than Mike does hear. And Peter over evaluates himself also. He and the band has no spark. Sure they play the song but it’s flat. All that being said the Monkees belong in the Rock HOF. There are other people in the Hall that did not play their instruments at all and the Monkees were Rock icons. How great of a musician were the Motown acts or Elvis?
Funny how these men outlasted all the mealy mouthed critics (that few, if anyone, can ever recall their names) that mocked the Monkees as being "fake" and presented the use of studio musicians as underhanded, when, for all intents and purposes, ALL bands make use of studio (session) musicians on their albums. These men shine on in hearts and memories.
Nonsense yeh we also use studios to record in but they were just actors in a comedy story line set to music!! Called theatre so the big wigs in broadcasting put 2+2 together and tried to make pop stars out of them to make more dosh ££ !!yeh was good TV entertainment for a sat morn in UK but that's about it ! Sessions players doing there albums and them in scenes holding instruments and not really playing them now come on get real lol r I p off
@@tonytotten408 Except Mike Nesmith was already a musician, Micky Dolenz had his own band "Micky and the One-Nighters"; Tork was a multi-instrumentalist (piano, harpsichord, guitar, banjo), was a part of the Greeenwich Village music scene, and a friend of Stephen Stills (who actually recommended Tork for the Monkees); Davy Jones the least musical, instrumentally, but he could sing, and was actually nominated for a Tony for his performance as the artful Dodger in the musical "Oliver!" on Broadway, having already played the part in London. I know this is two years late for you, but it might help correct your thinking.
DaCraMac. Actually Peter was amazed at Davy's ability to pick up playing instruments so rapidly. Davy played bass guitar, organ, percussion & drums. His rhythm was better than Micky's.
Mike Nesmith passed away in December 2021… RIP to a great songwriter and musician.
The fact that they can all still sing makes me so happy and proud of them for all they have done!
I was there that night....and I'm gonna tell you something...the minute Mike finished that song, there wasn't a dry eye anywhere in that room. It was very emotional, of course, no one knew that later on down the road that Mike would tour with Micky again...but this in the moment it felt like the end of an era and in a profound setting... this concert was a few blocks west of Sunset/Gower Studios where The Monkees filmed the tv series and several scenes from "Head". It was a celebration, but people felt sad. We all knew how important these guys were to us growing up and they will always be.
Cool, thanks for sharing.
