Watercolor flowerpainting tips to take your paintings a level up!

- In this video, I will share some tips that helped me with the water control wet-in-wet technique I use predominantly for my florals. I am sharing a painting I previously painted and going back in to create some interest. When you master your water control, you will feel more confident in your paintings and painting with this magical medium.
The pulling and pushing technique is precisely what it sounds like, wet paint on dry paper, then pulling and pushing that paint to create shadows and details yet still with a softer edge. This can also be used to soften any hard edges you might want, because watercolor has a lot of soft edges.
Wet on wet offers soft edges, beautiful color mixes, and wonderful surprises. Wet on dry will offer you much more control, hard edges, and details. Having a good grasp of these techniques will give your paintings a lot more variety!
Play with these techniques, and practice them repeatedly until you get a feel for wet on wet. Remember, when I lay down a layer of paint, I use half water, half color; the paint should shine with no puddles. I use the wet on wet for my flower petals and leaves, dotting in browns, burnt umber and burnt sienna around the edge to create interest. I also will dab in a dark hue in the middle of my flowers while the petals are still wet; this gives a fun and interesting effect.
My paper today is a beautiful and thick @arches, Cold Press, link below, 140# with a lot of texture.
I am also helping the paint to blend by “pulling” the paint specifically in the petal I dab or dot in the Quin Magenta paint and then go back with a dryer brush with less water and help pull the paint into the lighter layer of Quin Magenta petal with the tip of my brush. This creates so much depth, interest and skill into your paintings.
I thought making these little practice paintings available for you in my Etsy shop might be fun!
This one is not in my shop since it is not a full painting tutorial, only a technique.
You watched me paint many of these paintings in the tutorials, and I priced them very attractively for you!
What fun, right? Your purchase will help me and YOU! What's included?
* painting from tutorial signed dated and tutorial episode name
* my pre-recording swatch I created with colors for reference (all handwritten)
* more pre-work, showing brushstrokes, descriptions
These are all my behind-the-scenes notes and prework.
Every painting is on different papers, depending on what I was teaching, different sizes, and meant for supporting you, although can be framed as well as a fun piece!

Thank you Ashley. What a wonderful message to wake up to this morning ng. I am so happy to be with you and share my love for this medium. It can be challenging and tricky at sometimes even frustrating and also the most beautiful, calming, magical medium! I hope I can continue to inspire you to pick up your brushes and paint with me!
I just found you and love the calm, patient, repetative way you taught the little lotus painting with the push and pull technique. Thank you so much!
Thank you Kay, im so happy you found me :-) I love that technique too. It is small but can make a big difference. I will keep bringing you these little tips I discovered over the years that helped me. Happy painting Kay!
I especially appreciated that you showed the pallet when you picked up paint so we could see that part, it was very helpful to me.
Hi Ronald, I'm glad that was helpful. I also have a video on just that, my palette, my colors, and variations. I hope it proves of value to you! Happy painting, and thank you for being here with me. I'm also on FB and IG if that's your thing too :-) czcams.com/video/ZRqGVdiIKHY/video.html
I'm stunned as to just how little the amount of paint and the tiny movements you make. It made me realize how why my flowers always look muddy, I'm impressed and encouraged. Thank you.
I love sharing these small, subtle tips with you that can make such a difference. Happy Painting, im thrilled to inspire you to give this a try Janis! Make sure to lay your paint down with a shine, a sheen, vs puddles and pooling pooling and puddles = blobs :-)
This was wonderful! I feel like I received “permission” to go back to previous paintings and give them some depth! Love this…you sparked my imagination…thank you!
My pleasure Renee! Im so glad you were inspired to go back and play with previous paintings, I do that a lot. I figure I might as well play with pieces I've created I maybe didn't like and experiment. Happy to have you here!

Thank You for no annoying background music. This video was lovely!!
LOL Sometimes the background music can be annoying cant it Libby? I use it in my little 60 second shorts, for fun, but not in my tutorials. Can be very distracting. For me anyway. IM so glad you enjoyed my video, I just love these little magnolias. Happy painting and thank you for being here with me as a Newbie I am on CZcams!
Probably many artists do this push/pull, but no one has explained it. Thank you.
I’m so happy this helped!
I try to think of things I have discovered over the years, that helped me.
I still practice everyday over and over and still discover things, sometimes through a happy little mistake and sometimes by trying something new! Thanks for being here with me I’m on and FB too if you love those places.🌸

Good morning Dilemmix, Im so happy to have you here and be able to inspire you to paint! My goal is to share those little tips that over the decades I found so helpful for me. Terrific Fran, I use this technique and wet-in-wet for most of my paintings. It's what I have found over the years that gives me the effect I like. Happy painting Fran!
Debbie this video was so helpful! With my florals, it’s the details that I struggle with. This video is exactly what I needed. I would love to see more videos like this! Thank you for such thoughtful content!
Glad it was helpful! That makes me happy. I will try to put some more together. Have you peeked at my florals playlist? There might be more helpful things in there for you.
I have watched a few of your floral videos but haven’t specifically checked out the playlist! I will definitely do that! Thank you!
@@estegman10 I hope they are helpful 🎨🙂
Bonne peinture mon ami.

WOW - this is really helpful! I have so many things I think are finished because they’ve dried and now I can go back and “fix” it. Huge!
Yes!! And you don’t feel like it’s gone and wasted I have done this in so many of my old paintings I pulled them all out over the years Have fun!
@@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy I already tried it! Huge changes for the better!! Woo hoo.,.. Thanks again!
@@normul5984 you are welcome! Inwill
Continue to share all my little things I’ve picked up over the years :) glad it was
Fun!
Just loved learning this Technique . Beautiful 😍
I'm so glad! I am trying to share some of those things, I might not think about, because I've been painting for so long. So happy I can share tips that are valuable for you! Happy Painting!
Thank you for sharing this valuable information. Tips like this are so very helpful ❤️
My pleasure Brenda, Many times it is the small subtle tips that can make a big difference, this was one of them for me long ago. I hope to continue to share more as this. Happy painting friend!
I just started painting and I’m loving it. I discovered that I absolutely love the Princeton velvetouch brushes before even looking at CZcams. It has a great balance and like allot of brushes either hold too much water or not enough, the velvetouch holds just enough and I can control the paint much much more.
Yes Princeton brushes hold water very well The round long brush holds even more but I like the regular length brush for myself.
I so appreciate your videos. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you for explaining this technique so clearly!
Aw thanks im so happy. Wait till tomorrow! If you are curious about the Filbert brush, please take a look, so easy, so fun, and you will love what your create~ So happy you are here with me, thank you Happy painting and mostly have fun
My first time learning from you. Appreciate the repetition of techniques- wet brush, dry some on paper towel, push, pull. Creates muscle memory for me❤️
Awesome! Thank you! I try to go slow, and slow down techniques I use in order to explain. I paint out of habit from the last many decades, so sometimes I forget about things I have learned and have to slow down and then share! Happy they are helping and hopefully creating muscle memory, confidence and fun! Happy painting!
Oh, by the way, I meant to tell you that I used to be the proud Innkeeper and owner of the Magnolia House B&B in Lexington VA. So, magnolias have a special place in my heart.❤️
Hi Deborah! I thought I responded to this, it sounds absolutely heavenly. What a fun and beautiful house. I googled it. I cant imagine how beautiful the Magnolias must have been there. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful memory. Happy painting friend.
Debbie, I am so excited! I just found your video for the first time after watching hundreds of other videos. I have been struggling to learn watercolor for the past 8 months. I have been an artist all of my life and quite familiar with charcoal, pastel, oils and acrylics. Took a very, very long hiatus to raise my family and work on my career. All of a sudden found myself turning 65 and physically disabled by several serious surgeries (cervical and spinal fusions, 2 hip replacements) and realized that my art would be a wonderful therapy to help me with my pain.
Silly me, I always have wanted to watercolor and decided, what better time to learn?
Your tutorial is wonderful! Fabulous example of the push and pull technique and slow enough to understand and follow!!
Thank you ever so much for sharing. New subscriber and following fan here!! Deborah 😊
Oh, by the way I forgot to mention that I used to be the proud Innkeeper and owner of the Magnolia House B&B in Lexington VA. So magnolias have a special place in my heart ❤️
OMGoodness, Lucky you! What a wonderful, wonderful position to hold. I will definitely be googling that in Lexington. It sounds magical. I'm so happy that you found me, lucky me! Im turning 60 in August, and I promised to learn CZcams, videoing, painting on camera, creating a beginner's online course(this one is a BIG one), and a free ebook. Wow, what a journey it's been. Im so happy to hear that you are stepping back into watercolors, I have found them so healing and nurturing, calming for my soul over the decades I've painted, can't tell you how many times I have sat up till wee hours of morning painting. What a wonderful honor to have you here, and I hope you are on the mend and having fun with watercolors, its worth the practice, and the occasional frustration. Did you watch my wet on wet and tips and techniques tutorial? They may be helpful. I Do my best to slow down and step by step share as much as I can of the processes. Happy painting and so happy to have you here with me!
Fantastic lesson, Debbie. Thanks!

Thank you!! I hope you give this a try, its a technique I use daily. Happy painting!
I’ve been a decorative painter since 1991. Have not done much in the way of watercolor. You make it look so easy! I actually haven’t done any painting since 2018. Been somewhat busy working, dealing with medical issues and cardmaking/scrapbooking and trying to figure out a way to make that a business. Who knows…….maybe go back to painting and try to do a business with that.
@@starrdustmemorieswithdiane934 wonderful, Love hearing that you’re coming back to it and listening to the calling That’s wonderful. Thank you, I have painted many in the past with much more detail and shapes, I did my best to make these easily doable by all levels. Im so happy they inspired you. Happy painting!
Debbie, I learned so much from watching this video. I cant believe how you made a painting on Canson paper look so amazing! You have inspired me to go back and do this to some of my paintings. Thanks for the great lesson
You are so welcome! I learned this in college "eons ago" and it just made sense nad has been a technique that has stuck with me ever since and I use in all of my paintings~ Im so happy it works for you too. Have fun, and enjoy t his amazing medium!
Found you today. Amazing. Thank you very much for this.
Hi Patricia~ Im so glad you found me and my teaching style resonates with you. I have been a serious artists for so long, now I paint for fun, teach to inspire and so glad
Lovely so informative thank you.
My pleasure! I Hope I Can continue to inspire you to pick up your brushes and paint with me. This is a valuable technique I predominantly use in almost all of my paintings. Happy painting Nancy!
Great teacher
Thank you, Diane, as a newbie here on CZcams and making Learning this tech, and video stuff a goal by many 60th bday in August, that is encouraging. I've always LOVED teaching, in all capacities and with new people whether it was yoga, meditation, and watercolors as well! I'm so happy to have you here with me! Happy patining, and ENJOY!
Looks like a great technique! Also seems like an advanced technique with the devil in how much water you have on your brush! I noticed that even you were left with two “blooms”, of course, maybe that’s what you wanted, I can’t say that. You can probably do this so very much better than I could, but I appreciate the teaching. Perhaps with practice!?! 😊
Yes this is a great technique, and truly, even when I paint, I get blooms, and happy little "mistakes" in every painting unless I am going for more of a detailed, look. Which I rarely paint in that fashion these days. I love the fun little magic that happens when I paint and it has been such a great practice for me, to love what I create, paint with no pressure, and purely for the joy of it! This technique I have used now for years, and helps me to blend those hard lines and create some interest and shadows. Once you can play with the water ratios you will get it, it takes very little water on brush, mostly just a damp brush to push and pull the paint.. I always say if I can do this you absolutely can, Im not the BEST artist amongst them all, and not my goal, but I hope to share with others to paint for the joy, paint for you, have fun, and not get caught up in comparing and judging what lovely things you create! And always create paintings that are you, what you see and how you interpret your flowers which is uniquely you! Happy painting so happy to have you here with me :-)
@@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy Thank you!
My pleasure Donna Happy painting!

Thank you GiGi Art Studio~ I will head over to your channel and see what you have. Thank you for stopping by :-)
Love to learn flowers
They are my absolute favorite and what I have painted for many many years. I try to expand a little with other things to paint, but I always come back to flowers. I’m so happy you enjoyed them as well. Have fun and happy painting 🖌️🎨🌸
On the first leaf you added the darker green color and it left more defined hard line stroke marks of green on the dry green. I have done this with some of my painting and thought it should have looked smoother but did not want to overwork it. Your touches look beautiful and have given me permission to leave my strokes as they are or to add water at the edge.
Good morning, I’m so happy you noticed something that makes a difference in your painting! Wonderful many times it’s best to walk away.. I have to discipline myself to do the same~ happy painting artist friend!
