Thank you very much for this video. My HVAC service tech told me to keep replacement capacitors on hand because the price for him to replace a capacitor is close to $400. He showed me the service cost estimate. The capacitor in my unit has a label and I bought the capacitor for $14 off amazon about 6 months ago. Upstairs heat stopped working overnight. I tested the capacitor (after disconnect removed and breakers turned off) just like in this video. Capacitor was bad. Total time to replace was 25 minutes because I was being careful etc. I saved close to $400 and upstairs heat wouldn’t have been repaired until the service guy could get here in a couple days. This video is super helpful.

My Amrad 50/5 cap failed last year. It was 7 years old and I didn’t have a spare. The local HVAC tech had one on his truck $125.00. Believe me I appreciated him getting here and getting the AC fixed so quickly, and I told him that while handing him a big tip. However, I did order the exact capacitor on Amazon for $30.00 and will have my spare ready whenever this one fails. I really enjoyed the video and will honestly say you’re the kind of tech people want to work on their HVAC systems because you take the time to look everything over and see if any other potential problems are looming.

By spare parts I mean the common parts that go out, I once lost 600 dollars of food when my freezer failed because of a 26 dollar part and it took a week to get one in, no one in or near Omaha had one in stock. I have also had my kids needs parts for their ACs, I just happened to have one in my spares and then just reordered it at the cheaper price.

Great Video. I have a question.
I live in a 1500sqft condo in NJ. I have a central air. Rheem HVAC. It gets hot in summers. Especially, I have cathedral ceilings and sun-roof (skylight) in the living room. I set-up the thermostat at 70. And outside is 80. After running for almost 4-5hrs temp does not change. The living room is cool but the bedrooms does not get enough cooling.
    What could be potential reason
    - Air Filter (checked it is clean)
    - Capacitor
    - Dirty Condenser coil
    - Refrigerant.
Just wanted to know before I call a technician. To see if I can DIY. Especially Air Filter, Capacitor, Condenser coil. Last time, I called for maintenance it set me back $700.

For $80-$180 to our customers for a capacitor that only has a five year guarantee roughly the same life of a cheap Chinese capacitor is kind of pathetic. Even though you and I know on average they will last longer than this. Compared to the PCB Oil fill capacitors our grandfather and father installed that were on $2.75 and lasted 15 or 20 years. Situation. An AC unit I opened up to test has 2 capacitors.
    a Dual 40/5 uf 6% and a single 5uf 5%
The Dual only has connections on 2 of the posts (yellow on Herm, Orange and Purple on Common) and not on the 3rd post (Fan) that measures 5uf.
But the single 5uf run capacitor has 2 cables connected to it (brown and yellow).
My question is... Are the 3rd terminal on the dual capacitor (that rates 5uf) and the single capacitor interchangeable?

I.e. if the single capacitor fails, can I just connect the cables to the Common and Fan ? If so, which cable goes to Common and which to Fan?
Not sure if a repair guy took a shortcu there. But the dual capacitor was wihin range on both the fan and herm posts.

Great Scott, what is that cap, and how in the world do you short that puppy out for zap free insurance?
That thing is pretty cool and definitely reduces inventory!

is the +/-6% important? The one i want to replace has +/-5% but the replacement part i found says +/-10%, everything else is the same on both lables

I purchased a new 1.5 hp 110 volt replacement motor for a table saw from somebody on Craigslist. It would not run full speed, I checked the capacitors and the run capacitor was bad. I bought an exact replacement one off of eBay and put in it. I ran it without a load for about 2 minutes then it blew the run capacitor again. What are my options? Can I put a bigger one in? How would I check to see what is wrong with it? Thank you!

Hi. My window unit compressor was leaking. I decided to take out the fan for use as fan.I forgot the wire configuration and didn’t take any pictures. Could you please help me to connect the wires? It has 25/10+=60% capacitor just like one on your video has 4,3,and 2 prongs and a hi, low, medium switch.

Thanks for sharing this with us. I understand this video may hurts some ac guys but if you are good Tech you need to be honest. Don’t lie to customers. You can’t charge 400-500$ for the job cost you 20$ and 5 minutes.

The $400 is for the time of a professional technician to drive out, diagnose, repair, and warranty the repair, along with doing it while licensed and bonded in case an accident occurs. When a homeowner does it on their own they bypass all of that overhead and if anything goes wrong it's at their own expense.

A lot of hidden fees like liability insurance, maybe you want to retire one day.Gas for truck! Heath insurance ! Truck repairs! Disability insurance! Tools! and more! and the most important KNOWLEDGE! How would you like it if someone told you what your boss is paying you is too much.

When the capacitor is not marked on top with a single how do you know which wire goes where?

    • @DriveByReviews
      @DriveByReviews Před 2 lety

The top of the capacitor has markings by each piece for "fan" "c" and "herm", you can kinda see it in the video on the old one. Someone can confirm this, but the specific fork off of each top doesn't matter as it is one piece that transfers electricity.

It's on the top of the capacitor below where the terminal connections are

Thank you for your video. Question: If the capacitor labels 440VAC only on it, can I use 440/370VAC?

You can ALWAYS use a capacitor with a HIGHER voltage rating.

My HVAC guy replaced my capacitor and gave me the old one. Charged me $70 for the replacement part (plus labor). I then took the old one and did a google search. They cost 20 bucks... Bought me one from Amazon and will never use the HVAC guy again.

How do I find MFD specs for an old, old residential package unit in a old mobile home park when specs are no longer legible on compressor, run cap, rating plate, and cap MFD cannot be measured at all with a meter?
