- Hello and welcome to SHOP MAD,
In this video I'll show you how to make a simple self centering marking jig. Easy DIY project.
You can make it as big as you want but in this video I made the marking jig 100 mm long.
Materials used to make the self centering marking jig.
2 x 8mm x 40mm dowels
Wood 100mm x 25mm square
and A pencil
Firstly markout your peice of wood to 100mm long and cut it, then measure in 15mm either end and mark a line. Using a marking gauge scribe a line through the center of the wood and high light with a pencil.
You should now have three centers marked on the wood. Drill out the two end holes to a depth of 15mm using a 8mm drill bit, Then drill out the center hole using a 7.5mm drill bit this size depends on the size of pencil you are going to use. Using wood glue apply to the two outside holes and install the two 8mm x 40mm dowels, wipe of any glue with a damp rag. Install the pencil into the center hole to the required depth.
The self centering marking jig is now ready to use.
Place the jig over the work peice you want a center line on and twist the marking jig until the two dowels touch and then draw the jig towards yourself and you should now have a center line marked on your work piece.

Thank goodness for a no nonsense straightforward video on making this jig that doesn’t require a fully equipped workshop or the need to jump up and down and wave your arms around. Thank you Anth Wood.
Thank you much appreciated. Cheers Anth
Thank you. Will make one today!
Love your straight forward approach. I find this aesthetic rare in CZcams these days.
Thank you I try and keep it as simple as I can
Great idea ( The K.i.s.s. System) never fails 👍
Too right cheers Anth
It's good to see a woodwork video using metric instead of imperial.
I grew up using imperial and then switched to metric and must admit I prefer metric.
Clear and simple, Sounds like you come from the area where I grew up, The North East of England
Yeah I'm from a little village close to Durham
Thanks, really clear instructions, no useful waffle.
Thank you so much for the comment your support means a lot.
This is one of the best vids I have seen on a center marking jig. Simple and to the point.
Thank you so much
Loved the video step by step proper instructions thank you so much works a charm.
You're welcome! And thanks very much for your feed back. Cheers Anth
Nice useful video. Thanks!
Thank you Mike
Came back to watch again
brilliant Thank you for sharing
Your more than welcome Annie be sure to subscribe for the next video
first for me seeing a vid using metric. its so much simpler. thank you for the vid. im gonna make one for inserting dowels as i feel they are stronger than using biscuits for joining colour ends
Your more than welcome. Dowels are stronger than biscuits are good for alignment of boards to help with glue up example a table top. Dowels can be used for joining two pieces of wood together as well as alignment. Hope that helps. Cheers for the feedback Anth
@@AnthWood i made an eye level oven unit recently after watching your vid.2 metres high with pot draws n microwave compartment n storage.used the birchwood dowels abt four per shelf on each side n the result is amazingly solid
using a center marking jig to make a center marking jig

This is a really old post but I just came on it today. Here's my take on center finders...
The simplest way I know of to make a center finder is to use a pair of dividers to make 3 marks on your finder stock:
1. Score a line on the face of the finder stock.
2. Put one point of the divider in the score line at around the center of the finder and make a mark with it.
3. Swing the divider around from that spot and make a mark at either end.
These marks are perfectly spaced. Drill for the pegs and marker and have at it.
Thanks for the comment I like the calliper idea thanks again. Cheers Anth
2:42 thank you....OCD kicking in
Thank you
If I have a marking jig why would I need a centering jig...dont the both do the same thing
Depends on the marking jig also the time it takes to set it up for different stock. This jig doesn't damage wood fibres as a marking jig would. I hope that helps.
There are a ton of these center finders out there. Is there a good reason they aren't made long enough to find the center of a 2 x 4?
Hi Jeff
You can make the centre finder as big as you like. The theory is the same behind how they work. Hope that helps. Cheers Anth
Is it possible to make a similar jig that divides the stock into thirds?
Yes of coarse you can you just need to even the spaces between two pencils and two dowels
go next step. Drill second hole between center and stop or one quarter to three quarters stop to stop to 'quarter' a board. drill a third hole in the other half at one third stop to stop to 'third' a board.
Thanks for your comment and a great idea and concept. Thanks again for your input 👍
Cheers Anth
