Nice design idea. Almost pull this off, however the execution was very sloppy and rushed. It reminds me when I used to do this kind of DIY projects without putting the correct amount of thought and rush it to get it done.
1. He could have saved time, and a lot of aggravation and frustration by taking the time to TRACE the lines where the divisions were going to land and PAINT the drywall BLACK with a 4" wide roller and some black latex paint. In this case you don't even need to tape the dry wall because the panels will cover the excess paint on both sides.
2. For god sake man, sand the edges of the plywood correctly then SEAL THE WOOD before you paint over it.
3. ALWAYS paint the panels BEFORE you hang them. Painting them after is completely dumb, messy, inefficient and you will never achieve a good quality finish.
4. HOW TO AVOID EDGE BLEEDS WHEN USING TAPE ? There is a hundred ways to do this. The quickest and dummy proof?
- Put a tape about couple mills away from the edge of the face.
- Put WAX on the bare wood and cover the wax with another tape overlapping the one before (you need to use a STRONG TAPE don't go cheap)
- Paint and let it dry completely (read the instructions on the paint)
- Remove both tapes. The black paint will be seating on top of the WAX
- Now lightly SAND the WAX (150 - 220 grit) and it will remove the wax and the paint.
Always try to visualize the work flow and you may be able to come up with the correct steps.
Good luck

Love this man! Huge inspiration to all of us. Thanks for sharing your advice, knowledge and tips. 👊🏾
Cheers buddy! Check out Scott Brown's original for the true masterclass!
i’ve been looking for a video like this it came out beautiful it warms up the room
Next time paint the wall black first. However nice looking wall. I saw it on Scott’s channel too! Well done mate
Finished article looks great and that’s it mate. In the end it doesn’t matter if we make it harder for ourselves throughout the process of doing it! Kitten is lovely too!!
Cheers mate
Looking good!
My wife has done a lot of painting with different colours lately, and to get a sharp line with masking tape she paints the tape with the base coat first to saturate/"fill"(?) it. She suggests you could have varnished the edges and tape first and sprayed (or brushed) the black over it directly after it was dry.
In our experience there is no way to completely avoid masking tape bleeding a little, without this trick.
Nice! Thanks mate
Excellent job! Now I want to try this on my big shed. 😅
Thank you for sharing your efforts and a great job done. I’m a total novice and planning the same job. I would paint the wall roughly over the areas exposed and think it would save an awful lot of time. Too long explanations about taping over and paint bleeds, got your point right away. I will be varnishing so i’ll Get this job done before I install too. Thanks to the tips you have shown.
Great result, I usually paint the black onto the back board with a small paint brush, takes longer but less messy...
Nice job, it looks fab 👌👍
Cheers!
Nice job mate. It looks very effective
Thank you!
Looks awesome! Nice to see an actual DIY attempt at the SBC plywood wall, think others will learn a lot from seeing yours! I'd be tempted to vanish before installing the sheets and then spray the black detailing
Cheers, there's definitely a lot of merit in that. The varnishing was the easier part, but spray painting the wall and hand painting the edges before sticking them on, would have made life a lot easier!
Look great, well done !!
Cheers bud!
House is looking unreal mate
Thanks mate, getting there!
Looks amazing mate
Cheers bud
Outstanding!
Job well done 👍
Nice job👍🏾
What I used is a black u channel to form the lines of the shadow gap and this hides the ends of the ply after sealing then you can also put 10mm……3/8 polished glass in any of the horizontals for small shelves.
You could do some sanding as well aster the spray
If you watched the Scott Brown video im really surprised you didn't prepaint the wall and edges before installation. I head spray paint and it instantly filled me witg fear. Nice take on the plywood wall though 👌
oooooh new content. lets go go go. great stuff fella
Welcome back!
Nice design idea
Cheers! I saw it on Scott Brown's channel 👍
Well done my freind ive watched scott browns alot and vlog you said about plywood and blck paint! yours looks good but like to say as you have said in your vlog paint black on walls first the paint edges of ply later😎👍💗 as ive said to you your work is spot on well done my freind keep up the great work👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏💯%
Cheers mate
Nice !!
Still looks mint 👌
Cheers bud!
Real nice
Thanks!
it still looks good even though you messed it all up. lol the shodow overspray and bleeding looked pretty cool
I got a bit worried in the middle of the video when i saw the shadows. What a great finish!
Cheers mate, really pleased with the outcome!
May I ask what kind of stain and color were used on the wall panel? Thanks 🙏
I’m going to try that in my boys room cause sheet rock ain’t strong enough for these little angels but I will paint the wall black first cause I don’t got too much patience
Great idea! And you probably don't even need to paint the whole wall black. Just do a thick line where you reckon the gaps will be and you'd be covered 💪👍 hope it comes out well and they like it!
love the idea. but I would have to put LED into the gaps too. V ery nice job though.
That would look epic!
Using a small paint brush may have been worked?
Paint the wall and then use a roller on the edge before you put the boards up would of stopped the bleed
Paint the wall first and I think it would help using some kind of clear coat to fill the end grain before painting it black
I did strongly consider that, but figured I'd still have to paint the edges of the ply-wood anyway...I think a paint-brush would have been the best option!
How do you think it would look with the back wall painted, but not the end grain of the plywood? I'm leaning that way.
That was a strong consideration, the issue I thought we might come across, is that the shadow gap may not look definitive enough.
I didn't want it to look like an accident or as though it wasn't crisp...I think painting the back wall first would definitely have been easier and better though!
its probably better if you paint the back wall black and just add the plywood on top. that way it will have no bleed
Great stuff!...Wht r other plywood thickness u recommend for a feature wall? tq
To be honest I think 9-12mm is around perfect: a nice shadow profile, but not too expensive vs. 18mm this costs a lot more!
@@OfficeBoyBuilder thank you👏
No worries!
Great videos , can I glue ply onto ceramic tiles thinking of doing the bathroom cheers
With the right stuff you can glue practically anything together...ply is a great sub-base for bathrooms because it's typically hard-wood, and once primed with a bit of PVA is relatively waterproof and unbelievably strong.
You can then have your bed of cement over the top to hold the tiles.
@@OfficeBoyBuilder I want to glue ply to my tiles as I want to attach panelling to the ply instead of knocking all the tiles off the wall , cheers
Ahhh sorry. I understand now
If the tiles are sound, then I don't see why not! Once you've figured out your levels etc you'd have a decent surface to work from.
I would still be inclined to prime that ply with PVA, and then use a really strong adhesive like polyurethane or a polymer glue. Avoid the standard green or pink tubes of grab adhesive, that stuff is useless!
@@OfficeBoyBuilder I’ll do a small test and see how it goes and I’ll let you know cheers
Good plan! 💪
Nice work, great wall. But why not route the edges like Scott Brown? It's easy, saves you time with the sanding after the paint issues.
Yeah that would have worked, I was just a bit exhausted after doing it all! I would probably try that in the future 💪👍
Nice job. What thickness is the ply ?
Thanks! It's 9.5mm ply 👍
paint the wall black first. flip the plywood face down, spray all the edges leaving the front untouched
How's it holding up and did you end up sealing the plywood at all? Considering doing something similar myself. I'm concerned it would be hard to clean around the baseboard if it wasn't sealed. I have dogs :D
We're really happy with it. We sealed up all of it, and it has lasted great! Can't really comment about dogs though!
@@OfficeBoyBuilder Do you remember what sealer you used?
It was either a Danish oil, or a boiled linseed...I honestly can't remember which!
@@OfficeBoyBuilder Gotcha. I was thinking something that put a protective coating on it. Like Polyurethane or some type of finishing sealant. Thanks! It looks great by the way!
Shellac would be a good one for that too...I just didn't have any to hand!
What finish did you apply in the end? Must of missed it
I forgot to film that bit! I used boiled linseed oil...I absolutely love that finish, and it goes on really easily.
@@OfficeBoyBuilder looks amazing. Im always a fan of oils over varnish type products
I think im going to give it a go in the future.
Perhaps spraying some clear lacquer on the joints before painting black to stop it bleeding. Might help abit
What is this plywood wood paneling product called? Do you have a link to the product?
This is the stuff I used: www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Non-Structural-Hardwood-Plywood---12-x-606-x-1220mm/p/110401
lol you missed out the part I watched for 😂 what stain did you use?
Ooops sorry! Just black paint!
Why didn’t you paint the wall first ?
It would of been easier to paint the entire wall black before hanging the panels.
You could have painted the wall and vanished the panels then painted th edges, looks good though.
Agreed! If I were doing it again, that's 100% the method I would choose.
Personally I would have painted the wall first & left the edges natural.
Fair play! I did strongly consider that approach, but some of the edges had delaminated and I didn't want those defects visible, so the paint helped a bit.
I think painting the wall first would have helped for sure
why didn't you paint the wall the color you want before you put the panels up? lol
Yeah, Scott Brown, the inspiration, pre painted the negative gap
paint the wall first where your joins are gonna go
You could do something, put some wax, graze,
