    Just wanted to thank you SO much for this video and all the steps! I had been so frustrated with VM's crashing almost constantly. I thought I was going to have to give up... But this video saved me. Thank you! Thank you! Love the HA videos, and I hope you continue to make them!

    A couple of comments - First, thanks for the awesome video ... Second, there are a couple of "gotchas" with older UEFI bioses. The first is that they default to legacy bios - if you boot to the Ubuntu live USB, the default may be to use the legacy mode - in this case, you can not install HA in UEFI mode - to get around this, when booting the Ubuntu live disk, hit F11 (or F12) to bring up the boot menu and explictly select the UEFI choice for your USB stick. Then follow the directions. You will then probably have to explicitly enable the EFI boot as specified in the homeassistant instructions using efibootmgr

      Good callout! I've done this install on several machines and haven't had that "gotcha" yet, but thanks for sharing the steps! Hope it didn't trip you up!

    • @ChuckBuilds
      @ChuckBuilds  Před 13 dny +1

      I use the proxmox one for this channel, not as my daily driver. I started on a pi but have since moved to hosting HAOS as a VM on Unraid. It’s not “better” it’s just one less machine I have running.

    Chuck, the timing is perfect. Today I received a usb to sata adapter and I'm going to give this a whirl. I do have a question about IP addresses. My intention is to set up a HA network in a motorhome. Sometimes it will connect with my home network, but when we are on the road I don't see a need for a connections. Being able to have a completely local "smart home network" is one of the main reasons I wanted to use HA. My question is, If for some reason I do need to connect to a live network in the future on the road will there be any IP conflict issues? We have not figured out our mobile internet yet and that will be down the road so to speak, for now it will just be cell phones. Again timing is perfect, saw your earlier video and kept checking back to see if you had an update to that. Definitely going to subscribe and like as soon as I send this, Thank You. John

    • @ChuckBuilds
      @ChuckBuilds  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey! Glad this got out in time, I’ve probably spent too much time editing. So I don’t have a perfect answer for this - networking is a bit of a weak spot for me. I think it should be fine if your subnet is different than the one on the WiFi you are connecting to. But your local ip shouldn’t be a problem when hopping around networks with a travel router, I wouldn’t think. I wouldn’t plan on connecting your HA directly to public WiFi without a vpn between the two though

    • @ChuckBuilds
      @ChuckBuilds  Před 13 hodinami

      Additional hardware. I have additional videos on my channel with how to set up but I prefer the usb dongles, even though there are other ways to do it - the dongles are straightforward and easily replaced if needed

      I did a quick search and it might be an issue with your system time not matching? Sounds kind of strange to me but make sure you’re connected to the internet when installing and possibly try again on a different usb drive. Keep me posted and I’ll try to help! Might be worth checking your bios time too

    I followed all the steps using Ubuntu with a Dell OptiPlex 3050 i3-7100T 3.4GHz 16GB 240GB SSD to get stuck after "Waiting for the Home Assistant CLI to be ready…” with “[WARN] Home Assistant CLI not starting! Jump into emergency console…” followed by a line beginning with # .
    I wrote the disk image twice on the SSD drive. Both times I got the same answer. I typed Login several times as suggested on other sites to always get the same result. I waited for long time home assistance will never load. Is there any command that needs to be used to initiate Home Assistant?.

    • @ChuckBuilds
      @ChuckBuilds  Před 2 měsíci

      That's interesting. I hate to say it this way but have you restarted it when that error shows? I've only gotten that once or twice and a restart resolved it. If you still don't have luck you'll need to access the log files on the machine to see what is causing it.
      Let me know if I can help, sorry that you're having that error.

    I have installed HA on my laptop without using Ubuntu. I used Balena Etcher to install it directly on the hard drive. Although I can access the internet through Ethernet, the built-in WiFi adapter is not recognized by HA. Do you have any thoughts on how to fix this issue?

    • @ChuckBuilds
      @ChuckBuilds  Před 5 měsíci

      It would depend on which dell optiplex you get. A raspberry Pi 5 would be a good host for a basic HomeAssistant install but you want to be sure to install it onto an SSD and not an SD card.
