  • Happy Spring Quarter and welcome back to another Weekly Couch Potato! This time I have my old friend RJ on to talk about his life at UC Berkeley, and why UC Davis is better than Cal! We discuss housing, dining, majors, greek life, culture, and a lot more! Either way the University of California schools are great!
    RJ: rjpimentel5
Update: I'll be posting my experience from the March for Our Lives this coming week!! It's going to be a 3 part series!
Trivia! If you read this far, comment your answer below!
Question for this video is: How many videos on my channel (not including this one) have RJ in it?
    Okay that's all for now!

As someone who transferred from a community college in Berkeley to UCD I can say I have a fair amount of insight to life on both ends of this spectrum. I was so back and forth on going to Berkeley, all of my roommates went there and most of my peers went there but when I applied it was actually not my first choice. To be fair neither was Davis lol it was actually my last choice. But when I got accepted to Davis I was weirdly overwhelmed and excited, and then I got waitlisted for Cal and was again conflicted. I ended up being rejected from Cal, so I accepted Davis over the other UC's and ever since moving here I can say the change in pace has been drastic. However, the quality of life is much better. The air is fresher, people are generally healthier, it's much more quiet and safe, and it's easier to get around. Basically in Davis it's such a small town that the only thing to focus on while you're in school, is school. I haven't begun my major yet and already I have so may new connections. To be fair I had connections in Berkeley, but those were previously established from my community college. I imagine it's much harder as a new student. In Davis I thought it would be more difficult to get to know people because of the size of the campus, but it is a college town and due to its small size you're bound to run into 1000 students on any day/night out. So making connections is SUPER easy. At Cal yeah its a college town and most of the students live in Berkeley, but they could also live in Alameda, Albany, Emeryville, San Francisco, Oakland, etc. They're much more spread out and it can be way more difficult to collaborate with your peers. Even at the community college level getting a study group together was a nightmare because we all lived in different cities. Public transportation is abundant but can be very unsafe, as well as biking or other methods. But then again having a car can be just as expensive because of tolls and parking. Essentially people go to Berkeley for prestige, but Davis is also an accredited and well-established name to have on your resume.

    Choose Berkeley if:
-You are politically active and would like to be exposed to them in your daily life
-You like the balance between city life and college life
-You are brave (crime rate is high due to their proximity with Oakland)
    Choose Davis if:

Eh crime rate is high cause it’s in an urban location. I grew up in Oakland and in Berkeley (right on College Ave) all the way till college. The UC Berkeley campus is not really that close to Oakland, and the area of Oakland it’s near to has one of the lowest crime rates.

Hi Pre-med here, graduated Davis 17' in Bio. The health internships that Davis has are stellar. Basically guaranteed experience on a quarterly basis. I've had experiences ranging from ER Radiology at UCDMC to Psych Research. The med student run clinics are extremely rich opportunities as well for getting community involvement. Davis has internship deals with UCDMC (including research divisions), Sutter, student clinics, private clinics, and the prehealth counseling services for premeds are top notch - some of the advisers have sat on admissions committees. Good luck! If you have any more questions let me know! Go ags!

Grade deflation is overstated. Usually, the curve actually favors students (e.g. a c+ student can get a B- instead). When you compare academic rigor across the ucs, you'll find little differences. Don't pick a school just because you think it'll be easier, esp. when comparing uc to another uc

UCD you’ll be paying double the tuition. Don’t buy into the UC is better than CSU propaganda. For your situation SJSU is a lot better of a pick than Davis.

sjsu may be a better school for your major, but the atmosphere there is not great. homeless on campus near student union frequently because you are in downtown san jose in a not so safe area, the main area by the gym smells from the sewage underneath, people are rude(home of f*ck bois), and the DINING HALL oh my god. Unless you are not a picky eater prepare to eat the same things and not the best food for awhile. I'm not exaggerating that there are constant sexual fondling (against women) on campus, that is what the universities emails call them, and there was an incident almost once a month. I'm not trying to shit on sjsu, I had an incredible freshman year only because I dormed with my best friends from highschool, but in my opinion don't take sjsu over Davis.

Joshan Dhillon I disagree that it's propaganda. Sure, for certain individuals, a csu might be better than a uc. Also, there are specific csus that are better than a particular uc, like sdsu is prob better than uc Merced. However, for the most part, I think most people would agree that the uc system is better than the csu one. It'd be hard for me to compare any csu to ucla or cal. There may be specific majors that are better at the cal polys, but in general, I wouldn't even compare any csu to a ucla or cal.
