I review the new golf driver from Mizuno, the ST-G which is their low spin driver option typically aimed at the lower handicap golfer or the faster swing speed player. This new golf club has moveable weights from which I test in this video. There is also a matching fairway 3 wood and 5 wood, the SGT Titanium Fairway, review video coming very soon.

Mike. I believe that a lot of success of the TSR3 has come from combining it with the Tensei 1K Black shaft. If you compare the StG to the TSR3, then somehow you’ll need to use the 1K shaft.

I love mizuno drivers. Had the st-x in the bag a few years ago and just got on with it so well because of its consistency and for a bonus it looked and felt great. Also reviewed the last ST-G 220 model and thought that was great as well, especially for the price you can pick mizuno drivers up for on the second hand market.

Yes definitely compare it to TSR3. I had TSR2 since December 2022 and last Friday I was custom fit for the 3. Much better sound/feel and performance over the 2. Traditional Pear shaped head over the stretched out 2 is confidence inspiring. So good I got the 3 and 5 woods also ! Much better than the Rouge ST max fairways I had.

Would love to see this vs the TSR3. Surprised to see the smash factor 1.42-1.43 with those center strikes. Seems pretty low given you were getting 1.48+ with the TSR3.

I switched to the STG220 this spring after gaming a TM R9 Tour for 15 years. Tried so so many drivers over the 15 years but never found one that outperformed my R9 until this Mizuno. Consistently outgrowing my playing partners by 20-40 yards every hole and hitting 90% of FW. Only time I really miss a FW is if I outlive a dog leg straight or try and play too much cut or draw which I'll land fw and roll to 2nd cut. Couldn't say anything bad about the 3 track STG 220 and think this will be my Gamer for next 15 years

  • @MichaelM-to4sg

I formerly played the previous generation G series, I recall it was called the ST220G. A very good driver but as a player who commonly keeps same driver 3-4 years, I only kept it for a single full year.
I got rid of the 220G for 2 reasons; one being the sound. While nowhere near as annoying as a Ping driver, it was a bit loud for me. The 2nd and biggest issue was the dispersion consistency. While I appreciated the tracks, the single plane hosel adapter required changing lie if I changed loft. In order to achieve my desired launch conditions, 12.5 LA, 2450-2600 spin, I found the -1 loft (8.5 net) was best fit. Every loft adjustment using that Mizuno sleeve makes the lie more upright. Net result is I had too many misses left.
I then went to a pro shop while visiting my son where he was getting fitted for new irons. They had the TSR’s in stock. I decided to give it a try. The sound at impact was just more solid, a few lower db’s than the Mizuno. More importantly the dual plane adapter allowed me to achieve the loft and lie that best suits me, resulting in ideal launch conditions and consistency where I’m not fighting a left hook. My ball speed is up over 160, not likely due to hotter face as they both are COR compliant, rather I can swing more freely because I’m so confident in the club. Fwiw, I play a 44.5” length, I completely agree w/Mizuno stock length being slightly shorter than current industry standard.
I would certainly watch the head to head w/TSR3, I however already know which is the winner in my mind.
I think the most interesting would be the ST-G Carbon, ST-G Ti and TSR3. Maybe your Mizuno rep has not yet delivered the Ti version for demo yet, if so I’d recommend waiting for it’s arrival. Mizuno is claiming the carbon version in this vid is ultra low spin, the full Ti version is low spin. I’d want to confirm that as well as compare the sound of a full Ti G to the Carbon crown version. Pitting both against the best driver available is always valuable content 👍

Sounds fantastic. When I’ve tried to be fitted into Mizuno drivers, they always seem to sit a bit open to my eye. As someone whom in the past has had an uncomfortable relationship with the right hand side of the course, I’ve never been too pleased with that. However, I’ve worked on this and it’s less of an issue so may look again.

Just bought one. But it's not that one. Must be a 2023 model. Bought it for a car salesman. Ordered the #5 extra weights from good ole China. Got him a pair of Callaway gloves and balls. He has been helping us throughout the years. Super nice guy. Hope he likes it...!!! He seemed kind of down. And I thought as nice as he has been to us all these years. Sometimes a gift can bring you back up out of the hole. Anyways I liked, puts you up to 500 exactly on the likes. Peace.

This driver needs more coverage on how forgiving it is. I am petrified when someone mentions low spin, better player etc. (sttruggle off 11) and have always had a weak slice as a miss. Bought this, can’t see me changing, I dont have a particular amount of swing speed that I know of, I have messed about and have this now in the highest loft and lowest spin setting (11.5, weights both forward) - its a cannon, when off the middle which isnt hard to find even on the smaller head it flies, you know when its caught, but the off center strikes are so much more controllable and the horrid slice/fade which on older “forgiving” models ive tried (Ping g430, Paradyms etc.)are so weak would go nowhere, with the ST-G these seem to not drop out of the air like before and and filter to the right side I presume thats the low spin element. I love the look, sound and feel, the shorter stock shaft helps me, now I tend to line this away from trouble on the right and I know its either dead straight and handsome or its on the right but not miles offline and still up there - its all relative, I had to hit a lot of drivers to go through this, Mizuno products and not just their irons are so good and 100% worth trying, i sed a 5 wood and putter as well from them. I’ve steered away from the marketing of the big brands and just going for it now with what i like. I feel the new ultra forgving models are so gimmicky and marketed in such a way we just believe themto be true, this years line up are just weird SIM 2 Max is probably the last of the all rounder, in truth we shouldnt be scared of something geered toward a “better player” and just have a go no matter what the handicap - it could work !
