- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #567
Most of Death Valley National Park is in the state of California...but there's a little corner in Nevada, too -- and it's full of interesting history, like this abandoned summer ranch from the 1940s.

Caesar Strozzi wasn't Italian, he was from Switzerland. The family still owns the water rights. They are Shoshone. The family lived there until WW2, when all the boys went to war, and the government declared the ranch abandoned. Mary Strozzi, his wife, was a Shoshone woman. The family does go there every year. There are some living children and a very large family, all over the state of NV. One of his sons died in WW2. If you'd like more information, feel free to contact me.
Curious how a family owns water rights on a national park?
@@problu9586 I guess when you take native Americans land, you make a deal. I know for a fact that they own the water rights. That's why there are apple trees. The uncles planted them, because as long as they make small improvements, they keep the water. All I know, listening to grandpa, and uncles, they own the water.
@@mstrozzi1 Thanks for sharing those details. I was just curious.
With a name like Strozzi the family may have migrated from N. Italy into Swissland.
@@RagnarokArrives they share a border, it's quite possible. There are a few places in Italy where the name is common.
Strozzi Ranch is in the Grapevine Mountains north of Beatty, NV. It was the summer home of my grandparents Caesar and Mary Strozzi and their seven children. Caesar was a Swiss-Italian immigrant, Mary a Western Shoshone Indian. Of their children my mother Enes, and her brother Harry are still with us.
A few corrections and additions Wonderhussy:
My uncle Harry lives in Las Vegas, I believe, he is 95 years old. My mom just celebrated her 100th birthday May of this year (2021), and she lives in Beatty.
The apple trees were planted by my grandparents. There were also pair trees.
The dug out in the side of the hill is where my grandfather stayed when the family went back to Beatty in the fall for school.
The second building was indeed the chicken coop. The next building was the blacksmith, and that was the family brand. Later a diamond was added below the C becoming C Diamond.
The family had their last cattle round up, and sold the stock in the mid fifties, but still visit the ranch to this day. In the late fifties we still stayed in the main ranch house. One of my earliest memories in life is waking up on a cot under the window you see at the right side of the building to the smell of my dad cooking breakfast.
Mstrozzi1, which of my many cousins are you married to?
Reaching for the item by the structure is a classic snake bite scenario. Be careful Sarah.
Exactly my first thought. Right after she made the comment about snakes no less. Scared me watching her grab that bottle.
Mary Rose Stewart Strozzi is buried next to her husband in the cemetery at Beatty.
Jolly Time popcorn used to come in a can. I remember it from my grandmother's house back in the '60's.
Yes, I couldn't think of the name but Jolly Time was a blue and yellow can. I was thinking Jiffy Pop but that was the the one that came in an aluminum "pan" that you cooked over the stove. Memories...
Those look like cider apples 🍎 . They were important for making vinegar. They could be dried and used for cooking.
Good adventure in a remote area of Death Valley. Wouldn't it be interesting to interview Mr. Strozzi's son? The stories he could tell.
He has one living son, who just celebrated his 97th birthday. He's my husbands grandfather. If she caught him on a good day, he may tell her about growing up there.
That box label from Sears and Roebuck predates 1932 because 9th street was renamed Olympic Blvd for the 1932 Olympics.
Sears, Roebuck & Co. I remember them, they were the Amazon of back in the day…
@@jdmather5755 By last count there are about 25 remaining Sears stores. Each month it seems as if two or three close.
Was wondering about that. Thanks for the info.
@@jdmather5755 Man, there was nothing better than getting the S&R Christmas catalog!
Sears used to sell machine guns!!! Hell yeah!
Actually, a long time ago, they sold just about everything.
This has been my favorite place to camp for 20 years. I found it by accident while exploring. Definitely cooler when it's hot in the valley.
@20:00 just to the left of the super green area is a square area that looks like it was cleared for some purpose.
You have such a great personality you never run out of something to say and it’s always funny and always interesting all I wish you would do it once in a while when you get ready to settle down in your campsite you would let that beautiful hair of yours flow 😉thank you for another great video from the old retired guy👍👨🏻🦳👍
It must have been unpopped corn. As for the linoleum "rugs," there was someone on _This Old House_ a few years ago who still makes those.
I remember popcorn in a can. It was kernels you popped in a pan on the stove or fire. Before plastic bags
I know you've either started or are starting work at the compound soon so I just wanted to say Good luck to you and your sis! I really hope the Compund ends up becoming everything you've daydreamed it to be. I think You've bought a great place that with a little imagination and obvi some hard work could be amazing! I really hope you share some of the work and progress with us!
I love how you research and share. I'm always looking for a good story teller. I found one with you.
That 🍎 apple orchard growing there out in Death Valley is amazing! Oh watch out for them there Rattlers!
Love the little bits of history you bring to your channel. Apples in Death Valley, what a delight! Thanks for taking us along.
I think that might be the prettiest little hike I've ever seen! I sure hope you return soon to that location and take a couple of days to explore it. Perhaps you will need a break between the moving/landlording duties. (Think of your LasVegas abode as a 'safety'). That meadow is highly intriguing.
That structure constructed with rocks pre-dates Mister Strozzi by quite a few years . Good Video Wonder Hussy; thumbs up for sure.
YaaaaY... Another Wonderhussy video 😍📸
You're definitely my favorite urban explorer🤓My favorite explores is when you show us those old sheds and cabins🤠😎
Some of the structures look rebuildable and if the tank isn't completely shot up could be put back into service. Yes I hear you, that place has possibilities and with some modern materials it could be cozy. Water is always a concern so that would need vetting. Really cool old stuff there, at one time everything was new but time moved on. Love the videos. 👍👍👍👍👍❤🇺🇸
Are you married to a Debbie?
The Strozzi family owns the water rights.
Next time you are in Beatty you can stop by and visit Caesar Strozzi at Desert Hill Cemetery in Beatty. RIP Caesar
This has been an especially enjoyable Wonderhussy Wednesday. Two very interesting and intriguing videos. You always bring us good tales but both of these require further investigation and return visits. Btw, if you're taking a poll I vote for adopting that bikini as your official camping outfit. Stay safe Sarah.
Could be kind'a frosty in the winter.
Also where did you “put away your camera“ for the hike down the hill??
😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Under your hat?????😜😜🤪🤪🤪
Boots, Bikini, Babe! 😉
YES, as a child we purchased popcorn in a can. I can not remember what the brand was. I was born in 1948.
That is a nice hiking outfit.
Sounds like you have found the location of the next Wonderhussy estates.
Yes!
Man that Meadow at the end of the canyon is extremely intriguing. There is probably a ton of history back there. Can’t wait for you to go back. Great video!!
I watch her videos 2, 3 times over the years ,heck I don't care . Nobody tells a story like the one and only Wonderhussy!
Relatively new compared to the 1800's. Love the fact that those fruit trees are still bearing fruit.
Yes Sarah please go back to it and explore more of this area really enjoyed your video . Thanks lady
-> Yes, been following her videos, & am Now Subscribed.. My friends love watching them, so we all got interested in them!! Our teacher & Army Dad took us Exploring most of these places, CA, NV, & AZ, so, it's great to see them, again!! Bristlecone Forest, the Hot Springs, ghost towns, like Bodie, All!! 😌 Thanks to Wonderhussy!! Divine Angelic Safeguarding, Defense, Protection, Mercy, Providence, Good Health, Healings, & Many Blessings, ALL!! 🖖🏼📖🙇🏻♀️🙏🏼👼🏻✨🌄🌌🌟🌗
Another interesting exploration. Love all the historical trivia. Look forward to the next one.
That popcorn can came from Sioux City, Iowa - where I was born!
Cool hikes into Eastern Death Valley. You always do it right.
I love this canyon WH! I could live there. It's beautiful. J
Huge vast landscape is very picturesque/ beautiful… be careful out there.. best wishes to you..
The hot springs must be getting warmer with Wonderhusy around!
Great video! I would love another where you come back and stay a few days camping, using the spring for water, etc and videoing of course, like at lease a 30 minute video of your stay/experience I would love to watch! Who else is with me?
That was a great journey into the little-seen part of Death Valley National Park! I never imagined that apples would be growing at the park - interesting! You outfit in this vlog matched the theme very well, and the color looks great on you - it even matches your hiking shoes! Glad you took us along for the journey and hosted a great narrative! Looking forward to your next grand adventure! Stay safe, awesome, adventurous and smiling! Best wishes to you and your family! 🤙🧧😀
Pits looking fine!!
I just love your spirit of adventure. Being pretty much homebound it is nice to see places I probably never be able to go to.
Love when you look down and we look at those cute little rainbow Brite boots chugging along 😂👍
I don’t get why the NPS doesn’t view buildings like the Strozzi ranch as part of the cultural and historic record. The structures ARE historic and have a story to tell which you told very nicely. It’s similar to the park service view of the culturally significant trading post of Richard Wetherill they tore down at Chaco Canyon, just because it was a turn of the century structure. Thanks for this fascinating and fun video.
Two great videos and two songs-life doesn’t get much better Sarah-🇬🇧
Garmin In-Reach mini for dead cell zones! Small satellite GPS that includes texting ability and has a beacon.
Really enjoyed this one. Yes it deserves a couple of days to check it out. Take Care, Stay Safe, Be Well, Mac from Georgia
You bringing the dusty OLD interesting history, and love.
Thank you WH
I agree, Or maybe I should say I a-green with you about that vivid green area above your vehicle! He definitely deserves to be explored at another time!
Thank you for to thoroughly enjoyable videos today!
The area in death Valley you were at was absolutely gorgeous!
Interesting the American beauty box might be from the canning company in Austin Indiana. The company was founded in 1898 and still going today. Known as Morgan foods.
Damn, I hope you have a good first aid kit with you including a snake bite kit. Not sure I would want to be hiking around there in just a bathing suit. Thanks for the video. I appreciate the work you put into your videos.
Amazing video. Thank you for all the hiking there, and information. I'd love to visit and camp here in November. Great video, perfect work there on your part!
Sweets from the sweetest in such a deprived area of the past to see, love and feel for the future is always better sunshine.
Like the house with the nice fireplace no roof now. Cool tool shed I am thinking
I am happy you made it down safely and I enjoyed another Strozzi Ranch tour.
That was a great adventure with some really nice scenery WH, thanks for the share. :) NC
Your videos are a great escape from all the stuff happening in the world. Thank you!
Thanks so much for all you're videos, I love them all. I will always await you next video.
Simply magnificent share , was wondering when you panned left first peak was Grapevine peak , nice view from the bluff thank you good lady for a nice explore of D V northeast corner ,✌️👍💪🌹😸💎✨
I've walked on many a linoleum covered floor(8-). Great find, by the way. The ol' boy sure had a great view to enjoy after the day's work was done. Thanks for the hike and
what little history you were able to find.(8-) It can't always be east to find data on an abandoned place.
That's the wonderhussy I have not seen for awhile lol keep it up love your channel
Incredible! And beautiful! Amazing adventure and wonderful display of strength, beauty and intelligence, in your usual delightful way!
As always, thank you for cracking me up!!!!
Definitely You have to spend a few days there! That is Amazing!! Thanks! Sarah!👍❤️🇺🇸
Those apple trees would probably have better fruit if somebody pruned them and sprayed them once a year. The maternal side of my family was named Chapman in Ohio. One of the boys was Johnathan or "Johnny Appleseed" as he came to be known. He really did plant apple trees across Ohio and into other states, too. You can still see them today mostly in central and southern Ohio and many a hiker has stopped among the trees to have a nice red apple on a hot day.
@TheBajemo Hah. Good one. Maybe it was, IDK.
Ha! Yep I’m kind of related to those Strozzi’s. Loved seeing this video. Thank you so much!!!
You Need Taller Boot's and a hiking Staff, this time of the year in the Desert, Be safe WH
I love your videos! Perfect blend of humor and information. You are awesome!
Catching up on all your videos ,nice to see someone so adventurous thanks, from oregon
There was a popcorn called Jollytime that came in cans in the 50's. Never heard those linoleum mats called carpets before. Back then products made were constructed to last longer. Now everything lasts 3-4 years then goes to hell. Neat ranch and area.
It's awesome that you and your sister were able to find a place that you can share together and enjoy.
Although in the midst of Summer death valley can be very deadly the winter time May give you some needed relief.
Living under such extreme conditions you may be able to attract very talented geniuses that can give you solutions on how to survive in such a hostile environment.
You are the type of personality and intelligence that can accomplish this and I wish you good luck.
It would be an exciting adventure not just for you but for your fans as well.
Although you have this home in death valley, you will definitely continue to explore.
I’ve always loved your videos, but this new look is great
Love that old homestead good mix of features flat, hilly good mix.
Thanks Sarah for the interesting video, your a hardy character to be able to explore such rough places with…so little protection.
Such a awesome video& beautiful landscape, buildings
Love the two piece& hairy pits
Haven't watched in above 3 years way BETTER love it 💕
Thank you Miss Hussy!
“Very remote, very desolate, and thoroughly awesome.” Couldn’t agree more!
LOL! Canned popcorn, really?!! That had to be a can of kernels to be popped, judging from the small opening on the lid..
saving to watch later and later and later/////lol! this valley looks like fun to explore!!!
When you picked up that yellow broken pot and you said the color was so vibrant back in those days they put lead in paint and that would make it vibrant and it wouldn't dull out
That white glass was known as 'Milk Glass' and a lot of cosmetics came in jars bade of it, Face creams, etc.
That Bikini keeps you COOL but I would recommend BOOTS when you're hiking in those Hills in the summer time due to the indigenous Rattlesnake Tribes that hang out there.
Wow all that green in there probably water running!! Old cabin all that stuff precious 🥰 but please make sure close you car doors!! 😂🤭
Hiking with Wonder Hussey ... would be difficult to keep my eyes on where I am going ... 🤠 Great adventure and the outro was comical ...
It's always cool when you explore abandoned places and make up stories for us 😃
But that's a hella desolate place for a picnic 🍺
Looks like crab apples. They can survive just about anything.
Exactly what was planted. I knew Lois Strozzi. She was the first person to talk to me when I first came to town. Sweet lady with a heart of gold.
Yes I remember as a kid the popcorn and I can like that
Great video, I love this place, and you are looking particularly lovely
Great find and good video. I wish I could wonder with the Huss.
Yet another great video, and very fun too!
That was thoroughly awesome..really enjoyed that!
Wit woo that’s the best hiking out fit i ever did saw.. 😍
Hell, yeah.
There is a large reserve of rolled / riveted pipe that we saw on our visit in October 2018, like what was used as the fireplace vent. We wondered if it was made for irrigation. Place looks the same but you saw more apples than we did.
Amazing videos they are allways interesting. Love your perspective
how cool! Strozzi replied. I agree with past comment. Wouldn't it be cool to interview Strozzi on site. love your adventures and stories!
Very interesting area wish I was there with you. I think we all liked your outfit and would like to see more of it in future adventures. I would be very interested in all your homestead locations where exactly did they have water to survive in a desert
Or some less of it.
🙃🙂
Yes , it's very purty there 😃😇
Be careful, lilgurl...
Another great video 💖✌👍
You are awesome
Great Tour. Great hiking outfit. Play safe.
Great video Sarah
THANK YOU SARAH,VERY COOL..SAFE TRAVELS
one of your best vids yet. nice job
Growing up in the 60's , unpopped popcorn came in containers.
