- James Gurney embarks on an artistic voyage with Jeanette, Smooth, and captain Frank on a 1966 Glastron Futura speed boat, destination Middle Ground Flats on the Hudson River. The goal is to paint the moored boat en plein air, but first he has to overcome rain, wind, quicksand, and an engine that won’t start.
Gradients video premieres on CZcams September 10: • How to Light a Landscape

Painting, they said. It's a calming hobby, they said. It will help you relax. Yeesh! Nobody talked about the rain and the quicksand.
Or the squatters or getting stranded!
@@mechadebzilla
What squatters?!
Me: I can’t paint because it’s raining and it’s so windy
James: hold my beer 🍺
Practically every outboard boating trip I've ever been on right there. Way to keep your cool!!!
Exactly what I was thinking.
I yelled out for Jeanette when I thought that she was going to fall, lol! You guys are great and I enjoy your channel so much! Thank you. Julie 🥰
Boat that won’t start is such a childhood memory for me. 😄🥰 Thanks for the video!
Your perseverance is admirable. I love how you just won’t quit!!
I love the effort Mr Gurney puts into his videos, like with the stop-motion unfolding scroll giving the names of the paint colours used. Beautiful painting too!!
I love your work. That boat is a classic. It’s funny how a quick sketch/painting became cherished memorabilia. Your adventure with rain, wind, mud, an uncooperative outboard motor and a wet dog was a hoot! I applaud your positivity and outdoor spirit.
I'm impressed by this little Mazda pulling the boat out.
Saw that too
mr. Gurney you are is a true genius.
I always love to see the bespoke objects that churn away gently for the end of the video! Lovely painting, but also just a wonderfully creative person
So glad you got out of there! Thank goodness!
You did amazing in spite of the stinky weather...!
Hi James.... I really enjoy the way you set up your videos, very entertaining and educational. Thanks.
I believe the postal service's motto applies here with a few modifications: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays this artist from the swift completion of his appointed painting." :D
Lovely as always despite the obstacles. Love those water effects!
I hope Jeanette's phone is still functional! And glad to see Smooth wearing his life jacket.
Ready for the Gurney Journey!!!
......
Reminds me of Van Gogh, when he painted on the beach in the storm and there was literally sand that got into his oil on his canvas from high winds!
Thanks James ... WHAT FUN!
Brayer gradient instruction looked like magic; you just beep boop bop and voila; perfection.
THE BEST! no one has it all like Gurney!!
Quicksand, Rain, dropped phone, dead engine....excellent painting, expected nothing less.
After all the adventure, Smooth just wants to sleep.
Thanks, Master.
I believe Michelangelo said patience is genius....always inspired by your dedication James.
Oh My goodness, all the challenges . Your piece turned out Beautiful.
Thank you for sharing your family outing ❤️
Twas a pleasure seeing gurney jr
Hey he looks just like you and Jeanette!
Hmmm sounds like a good experiment.
Pulling a boat with a car, now that's the most interesting thing I saw in that video. I haven't seen that since steel frames went away. I had an old buick that would out pull any Truck today. Then again I have always loved on waterfront property with my own private 6 slip dock, so I don't have to worry about pulling boats. My father was a genius. He built in the old archimedes claw system. Which lifts the board out of the water so we can power wash the hulls. Set them back in and we are in business. A stranger pulls up thinking they are in a park the claw can sink them. Easy peasy
Wow!!! What a day! Looks like awesome books and info! Thank you
Glad to see this guy is living the life by going to different locations and painting such beautiful sceneries!!!
I love your genius...thanks 4 sharing 👍
I actually enjoyed those splotches caused by the rain drops.
Excellent painting adventure video, as always. !!
Your artwork is so good!!! Amazing Work, Thumbs up! 👍👍👍
love all your videos and techniques and your work is amazing! braking shades into color blobs and showing it was very helpful!.
Enjoyed the painting class but the 66 boat was absolutely wonderful 👍🏴
You (and your family!) are much hardier than me. I'd have bailed at the first drop of rain, let alone the wind, quicksand and cold! Hats off to you!
These videos are always so calming, thank you for making them!
😂
The brayer gradient is a cool idea. Reminds me of the tinted plastic overlay my parents had for our B&W television; blue at the top and green at the bottom for a faux color picture. Of course close-ups had blue foreheads and green chins but we didn’t mind.
This video has so much drama! Thanks for another great one.
Excellent recovery and challenging
En plein air, very interesting, thank you.
Hey, James. You guys go to great lengths for your Art. Ah, the suffering Artiste! I really liked the blue sky. But I realize that it’s the Artist’s personal choice. Awesome trip for an awesome painting. TY, again, James!
Many thanks for revealing the extraordinary in the ordinary.
I'm looking forward to this one! Loved the clip here and how you, Jeanette, Frank, and Smooth overcame the various obstacles.
What we do. for art - great job and I learn something new. Thjanks
Greatness enjoyed thanks for sharing
Such a fun painting adventure
Awesome, Mr Gurney!
You are just THE BEST!!!!
Watching your videos are very calming
No. 1! Woooo, You're such an inspiration Mr. Gurney!
Determined family! Great painting!
You're very patient! Fine work.
Glad to see you guys made back safely. Also another great painting as always.
It's an honor to watch your channel and be a subscriber. I'd love to get your books and learn more about your history in art. Thanks
”smooth, help me” lol
Looking forward to the gradient videos. Thank you.
I would have been sooooo discouraged! with that weather. Wow, just a great video of how to really stick it out though and get the painting done.
That was fun to watch…can't wait to add Gradients to my collection of your instructional videos…so great to binge on them all sometimes! Smooth has a great dog life, by the way!
And on top of everything else you get the greatest camera shots of your work. Amazing with the mud and the rain and you can still pull together the painting and the video. Bravo!
I quickly read that title as “sketching in a speedboat”. Quite the talent. 😁
You haven't seen the lady doing art while hang gliding??
I alway’s love watching you paint. Thank you for sharing
Yay! I've been waiting for the next installment of the colour in practice series for so long! Thank you James :)
HA! That was an adventure!!
one time when I was in school at new paltz I painted an exposed chimney near a seasonal goods shop on "Apple Hill Farm" and then it began to mist.
I was pretty proud of the result because all the compact white dots made the chimney popping out of the woods look surreal.
Awesome work under a bad situation
Glad you got her restarted, but oh my gosh this was the most enjoyable video I have seen, I felt like I was right there on the adventure too! Loved the boat and the painting too!
I like how he breakdown his ary while drawing.
Amazing style.
This is precious! thank you very much, God bless you!
The engine won't start......but let me tell you about gradient backgrounds. Too funny. Gawd, its good to laugh.thank you gurney family.
Wow! what an incredible adventure! Can't wait to download the Gradient video!
Super excited! I love how you painted the water.
This whole experience was beautiful ❤️
Wonderful 🌞🤗👍🏼👍🏼
It’s not a real adventure until something goes wrong 😂
Im so excited for the upcoming videos 🥺
the way he said he couldn't get the engine starting for 2 hours and then segues to the explanation emanates 'oh no! anyway' energy
Hai james. Nice video. Thank you
Classic #pleinairproblems 🤣 but beautiful result as usual!
Greetings, sir!
I love this video! I could almost feel the thrill of the experiences you shared.
Painting under the rain is not easy. I experienced it a couple of times these past few days. I have a similar home made easel based on your design, but it did not have the same diffuser. I used spring clamps to attach a small umbrella on my tripod instead.
I feel so stoked about Gradients! Will definitely get it on the day of its release. Learning something new from you is not only very exciting, but also very rewarding.
One of your biggest fan
That is amazing 🤩
great video, very inspired james!
COOL! Your son look like you!
You are proud of him!
Your painting is cool! 👍
Excellent painting adventure and painting! Loved seeing the Kingston Light House, learned to sail up there.
Miss your videos James, hope all is well
Good video! I'm great fan of your work. 😇👏👏
I want to paint my husband’s mistress, his 17 ft. Boston whaler. Your video is a great inspiration.
LOL, good idea!
Happy here been waiting for new videos, sir. Good AM your time, time for me to sleep. 😊 Be blessed!
George Carlin ask: "Why do you drive on the parkway and park in the driveway. I want to know why does a motorboat have an engine? Excellent video! I love all the add in information about the boat and your location.
ty
I'm glad all of you survived your ordeal. Doesn't sound like a fun day.
I love everything about your videos 🤣❤️
beautiful boat. Grew up on the Hudson River, so many better spots, better at higher tides. Too much muck/quicksand, lol! I’m from Coxsackie.
Painting along.....
Hella work you did there other than painting.....
… muy bonito 😍
I simp for your videos and you, sir.
居然能在这种环境下画水粉,不愧是大师
Hi James. Big fan of your work… still. Have you tried doing any digital art with an iPad? I think they are a wonderful tool. But I certainly understand if you haven’t, because you’re very masterful at watercolor and gouache painting. Keep up the great paintings and videos.
just borrowed a copy of your book from a friend i hope i will learn from it, any further tips in approaching your books???
