    ENG:
    Designed by Sir Charles Lanyon, Crumlin Road Gaol prison was built between 1843 and 1845 and cost £60,000. Built as a replacement for the County Gaol on Antrim Street in Carrickfergus, it was constructed of black basalt rock on ten acres at the bottom of the Crumlin Road and was one of the most advanced prisons of its day.
    The prison was originally built to hold between 500 and 550 prisoners in cells that measured 12 x 7 feet, (365 cm x 213 cm). It was the first prison in Ireland to be built according to "The Separate System", intended to separate prisoners from each other with no communication between them. Later, especially in the early 1970s, as many as three prisoners were placed in each cell.
    In 1924, Éamon de Valera (third President of Ireland) was arrested in Newry for "illegally entering Northern Ireland" and held in solitary confinement for a month in Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast.
    FR:
    En 1924, Éamon de Valera (troisième président de l’Irlande) a été arrêté à Newry (ville d’Irlande du Nord) pour "entrée illégale en Irlande du Nord" et placé à l’isolement pendant un mois à la prison de Crumlin Road, Belfast.

    I spent 2.5 years of my life on various wings and landings there, what they have done to that place reflects nothing of the way the prison was during the troubles, they have just carnivalised it and its such a shame.

      I was there last month on a tour.. I was surprised by how spartan the cells were. Especially being in use until 1996! I’m curious if they kept the loyalists and republicans in the same sections?

    • @formhubfar
      @formhubfar Před 2 lety +1

      @@GrnChli Loyalists and republicans were kept together on A wing and B Wing (2 and 3).., the reason they done that was to prevent either side launching mortars on either wing, back then our cells were decorated with posters and pictures of our families, we had cut up blankets for a rug and the rest was made into curtains, posters and photo's would be stuck to the walls with toothpaste, its a shame what they done to the crumlin road as its unrecognisable to me now.
