  • LIVE FIX: Watt's up with Intel 12, 13 and 14 gen CPUs crashing games, getting hot and failing early?
Featured motherboards: MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS and AsRock
    Articles: www.anandtech.com/show/13544/...
On modern Intel processors, PL1 defines the lower limit of power consumption (watts), which applies when the CPU is under low load. PL2 is the higher limit, which applies when the CPU is under heavy load and is temporarily boosted (overclocked).
PL1 is the effective long-term expected steady state power consumption of a processor. For all intents and purposes, the PL1 is usually defined as the TDP of a processor. So if the TDP is 80W, then PL1 is 80W.
PL2 is the short-term maximum power draw for a processor. This number is higher than PL1, and the processor goes into this state when a workload is applied, allowing the processor to use its turbo modes up to the maximum PL2 value. This means that if Intel has defined a processor with a series of turbo modes, they will only work when PL2 is the driving variable for maximum power consumption. Turbo does not work in PL1 mode.
Tau is a timing variable. It dictates how long a processor should stay in PL2 mode before hitting a PL1 mode. Note that Tau is not dependent on power consumption, nor is it dependent on the temperature of the processor (it is expected that if the processor hits a thermal limit, then a different set of super low voltage/frequency values are used and PL1/PL2 is discarded).

FYI...on my Asus Z790 ProArt MB with a 13700k,in the bios ,under Ai Tweaker, the Asus Performance Enhancement 3.0 is worded differently than your MB.Its listed as Asus Multicore Enhancement....I changed from "Auto-Lets Bios Optimize" to "Disabled-Enforce All limits".Now everything is set to Intels limits. My PC never ran too hot with Cinebench, but its cooler now and im more comfortable running the Intel limits.

Had computers for 35 years, first one was an Atari 1040 ST ,built pc's for a long time.
    Built a new pc with a 7600x and a 7900xt last year.
After 3 months of flawless operation I had continually AMD GPU driver error messages.
Pc ran fine without a GPU , reinstalled windows, latest bios version.
Tested everything, cpu was faulty, probably the chiplet with the pcie complex had gone bad.
    Got another one.
Still works fine, but I don't touch pbo any more because my former chip did 5.6 easy out of itself with pbo,but at what cost, even with a beefy cooler.
    Then the gpu went bad.
In cyberpunk , my hot spot temps were around 105 °c,normal temp around 60-70.
I suspect the cooler not being mounted correctly and sag.
Had an anti sag bracket under it, but it died before I could even think about repasting or rma ing it.
2 AMD products died on me in less than 6 months
Got both cpu and GPU new,and they work as intended now.
I have had both AMD and Intel and never have I seen this happen.

I have i7 - 13700k and after updating the BIOS on my ASUS motherboard, the CPU stayed cool enough and haven't had any issues since.
The temps seem to cap in games around 80 degrees and no more crashes.
I updated my BIOS around the end of 2023.

I updated my ROG STRIX Z790-H motherboard's BIOS a few days ago and I get the same result. Games don't push over 80c for me. The only game that really pushed my CPU is games like Dead Space and Wolfenstein Young Blood.

Excellent video Carey. I checked my older ASUS TUF Gaming Z590-PLUS WIFI motherboard with an i7-11700K. According to Hardware Info it was set to PL1=4095.9 and PL2=4095.9!!! Thanks to your video I was able to set these values to their proper levels (125 and 229, respectively). I'm not a gamer and probably don't stress the CPU much but it's still nice to know that I now have these limits set to their proper values. Thanks again.

I have the opposite problem with AMD - pc freezes after idle, because the cpu start running too slow. It was a easy fix with the 5600G just disable c-state in bios (B450) but the same problems happens with 7600X and the B650 doesnt have such feature in the bios settings so theres no fix for it. I dont have a clue if these problems are cpu or motherboard related, or maybe a combination of both...

@@xismxistexactly for me as well regarding an AMD Ryzen 5700G. Maybe you can find a setting in AMD CBS (from BIOS) called Power Supply Idle Control and set it to Typical. That's what Gigabyte support told me to fix it. Maybe it works on AM5 also. Cheers! 🎉

This situation and lack of disclosure by mobo makers must be really dangerous for someone who uses throttle limiting software like ThrottleStop. Not knowing that mobo is feeding excessive voltage to the CPU and using software to disable or limit CPU's safety guards, that is throttling. This combination can probably burn a CPU real fast.

    • @adamsleath
      @adamsleath Před 19 dny

@@aolish there are a number of intel power profiles (specs) in their datasheets. which they assign to different sku's and different power profiles within those sku's. the power limits are in your hands. lower them (below 219) to what suits your thermals. is my suggestion. there are also current settings that act as another limiter on power draw, also within the spec sheets. the extreme profile for a 13900k from memory is 320A (not watts) Amps. some other techtoobers set this current limit to 400A which they can get away with on typical high binned chips in the 13900k/ks sku

@@MrSamadolfo They run just fine but can be unvolted if need be in order to run cooler and in a lot of cases even ran faster being undervolted. AMD tends to run hotter than intel but are also designed that way, so the upper limit temps you see with AMD will scare intel users and in most cases people think both platforms should run at the same degrees Celsius and that's not true.
