Hey Alan I was the one that came up to you with my Mrs in the carpark before you left. About an hour after you left a a group of whales and a huge school of salmon came through and everyone was bucketfuls of 40-60cm sized ones for around 30 mins before a huge shark came through and everything quieted down. Half the pier was using the plastics you gave out, I head someone saying “I caught it using the soft plastics that CZcams guy gave us” 😂 Good to see you!
OMG that's crazy, shame we didn't stay to see that it would have been amazing. We moved onto a few of the beach and rocky areas and got a few but it was pretty slow. Wow I'm spewing we left now whales, sharks and salmon that's incredible. Was great to meet you guys !!
You can catch them on any lure when they’re on
What’s the white plastic you were using and the hook size
the excitement when the fish are ON is intoxicating… friends from strangers every time!
Very well said. Complete strangers connecting over the joy of fishing and catching. Was so good to fish with many wonderful people that day. Everyone helped each other and there was excitement and friendly banter.
I was smashing a heap of small salmon at Wyndham Harbour rocks a few weeks ago... a father and young son were bait fishing.. the son kept asking me "how many's that now???" I was up to about 10.. I asked the father if he wanted a few lures instead of bait.. I even went over during a hot session and set up a rod for the young fella... cast the first one out for him as an example of how to do it and BANG,...hooked up immediately and passed the rod to the kid... they had a great morning... every time I looked back over the camera was out and another fish.
Lol. mate the comradery of fishing is fantastic. Highs and lows spent with people who love the sport. what a pleasure to watch. This is what fishing is about for me. Made my day mate.
Thanks !! I agree 100% the best thing about that day was spending time with some wonderful people. That's why I kept some of that footage in as it shows people helping each other, the friendly banter and strangers coming together and sharing a passion. Thanks for watching.
Exciting time and good on ya for helping the kid.
Thanks !! Yeah we helped so many people on the pier that day, us guys fishing with plastics were catching heaps. We handed out heaps of plastics and jig heads and helped many with some pointers. Great to see everyone encouraging and helping each other.
@@fishingmad Fantastic. It did seem like everyone was helping each other like a bunch of mates. Bad luck to the poor guy who lost the fish with the net.
Hi Alan, what can i say??? Just fantastic, what epic session everyone having so much fun and fishing there shoulder to shoulder with you it's just a epic....😊😃💪💪🤙🤙🤙
Glad you enjoyed it, Yeah this was so good. Locals enjoying each other's company, friendly banter, everyone helping each other and some crazy good fishing action. Thanks for watching and supporting !!
When I saw, I thought it was busselton jetty, my local and the Southern Hemisphere’s largest jetty.
There are some amazing piers out there that's for sure and that one is a wonder. Getting so many requests to cover more land-based stuff so hopefully, we can cover a few more spots.
Great show Allen and great bunch of people bye the sounds of it would love to go there and have a go, if the locals help out like that it's amazing top show 👍👍
Thank you so much, I agree its so good to see the local fishing community working together
Mate that is awesome! My dad has been telling me we cant go fishing because Winter is not the right time. Little does he know I will be showing him this on Friday night! Great Video Alan!
Thanks !! Yeah 100% you can still catch in Winter just need to follow the right species and locations and the action can be lots of fun. Just wear plenty of warm clothes.
Love the fishing community best people around 😊
Yeah, it was so good. Everyone loved getting involved that day.
Salmon, the chicken parma of the sea, great fighting, great eating. enjoy
your drone footage seems to show a big ray @1:48 in the top right corner. Another great vid
Well spotted, your 100% right. I didn't notice when I was editing the vid but my wife noticed it straight away too.
Bro got an eye for detail
Good fun video, we are so lucky to have these fish in OZ, nothin better than a session on the salmon.
Lorne pier will be chockers this weekend hehehehe Great catches!! I've been catching 60 - 70cm salmon off the surf at Angelsea and Fairhaven.
Thanks !! Yeah i was very keen to try Angelsea and Fairhaven aswell. I stopped there last week on the way back from Lorne and managed a couple, but keen to give it a crack. I bought a new surf rod yesterday so that might be the perfect spot to break it in
I haven't fished off Lorne pier since the 80's. I think a trip with my son is in order in the upcoming school holidays.
Yeah, school holidays 2 weeks away so perfect time to get up there, its been fishing well.
Nice mate you guys killed it down there I fish there a fair bit it’s a great place to go cheers mate very entertaining
Love the crab pot "gaff", I'm off to BCF in the morning
Yep I bought a couple of them today as well. They make a huge difference when fishing of an elevated pier
Nice fishing experience, I just landed one at Batemans bay, I love this feeling.
Awesome !! Great to hear you got a good one at Batemans bay
Hi Alan, I have just started fishing with soft plastics and I was wondering where I should start to fish. I have a couple of marks up Altona way but they are all in 15+ metres of water and I don’t have jig-heads heavy enough to get them into the strike zone. Amazing Video!!!
Thanks, yeah 15M is way to deep, I catch the majority of fish with plastics in 3 to 7 meters deep. It allows you to work the soft plastic a lot easier and use 1/8, 1/6 and if needed 1/4.
@@fishingmad thank you soo much
No probs
Nice work I was there a few weeks ago and not a touch... I guess you have to be there when the fish are about...
Yeah, I guess so. Ive done 2 trips there in the last 2 weeks. Trip one was this sesh, trip 2 was much quieter but still landed some really good ones just not many
They are really fun to catch 👍
Yep 100% they sure are. One of the most fun forms of fishing.
man i feel bad for you guys in melbourne if thats considered a monster salmon ahahahaha awesome vid mate. gotta get to wa to catch a proper monster
Your right, that is a massive salmon for Vic waters, I have mates in WA who frequently show me ones much much bigger as standard catches.
I spent years on that pier, salmon is good for bait and thats about it! Amazed the seal wasn't there to ruin your fishing.
Yeah, I released the majority of salmon which i caught and kept a few for some locals there who wanted to eat them. I went back a day later and old mate the seal was there and the fishing was much slower.
@@fishingmad Salmon is the only thing you catch off that poorly design selfie spot! Should see it on a long weekend when every Melbourne and their dog turns up there...revolting
Salmon are great sashimi
Kiwi here. We catch a lot of these fish but we call it kahawai. If you bleed them straight away they are as good as any fish to eat.
You make fishing look sooooo easy
Thanks !! Love days like this when you turn up and the fishing action is crazy, there are often times with long hours on the water.
@@fishingmad I only catch saltwater fish on my uncles boat not on piers, love western port bay and port Phillip bay fishing
My old stomping grounds. I cut my fishing teeth in the Otways. Pier, rocks, beach, estuary and trout in den dam hills. Best learning grounds to grow up in.
Yeah its a wonderful region for fishing, the coastline there is mainly untouched because access can be tricky and a few ripping systems and estuaries. Was so nice to be back, I used to fish the area regularly and haven't for a little while.
@@fishingmad My folks are still in Apollo Bay. I'm due to get back down there soon. Might try to bother some Johanna giants
Yeah that would be amazing. I've been hanging to camp and fish on the beach at Johanna for a while now, target some big fish and Mulloway there has been on my todo list forever,
@@fishingmad We used to get pick up the occasional Mulloway fishing of a night in the estuary waters at Hordern Vale. Haven't done if for years, so not sure if things have changed
Looks like an epic spot for spearfishing
Thank you for the free soft plastic!!!
I love your land based salt water fishing ones. As that is the type of fishing I do the most, the yak wouldn’t be much good on those waves…….. what’s ur combo?
Love the work bro, tight lines bro 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
Thanks !! Yeah really hoping to do more land based stuff which can be pretty challenging to film at times. I was using my fav combo its a G Loomis NRX+ NRR model with a Shimano twin power XD 3000. Hope that helps
Good fun
Sure was, Thanks !!
Nice little salmon mate 🎣.
Hi Allen looks like you guys had so much fun, my wife wants me to take her there , just wondering what the plastic your using is called cheers
Combination of a few things, Keitech easy shiners 4 inch rigged on 1/4 ounce jig head, Squidgee 120mm wrigglers again rigged on 1/4 and the big one was caught on a lazy lures bomb squad pre rigged plastic in artic assasin
Thanks Allan love your fishing show
You should try beach fishing in Torquay or jan kick you get flatys at the surf beach and gummy’s at front beach and jan juck surf beach
Yeah that's a great suggestion and a spot I've been wanting to fish for a while
20 yrs ago I watched a fella bring in a 9 foot bronzy in the surf at Jan juc... never swam there again 😂
they are great smoked or gummy bait
Yeah its amazing how people have such different opinions on Australian Salmon. I know many that love eating them when prepared properly, I know many who only use them for bait and many who just release them
Awesome Salmon on the light gear, Alan! Out of interest, what rating braid and leader did you use? Thanks Evan
I was using 15lb tasline and 15lb shimano ocea leader, I think you would be ok with 10lb, but i like fishing heavier as salmon and trevally will try and get you on the pylons
@fishingmad Thanks heaps Alan! I think I'm definitely going to put some 10 to 12lb braid on one of my 2-4kg 2500 combo's for the bigger land based stuff. Cheers
No probs, yeah I love fishing finesse but need to be ready when those bigger models come on
If you want bigger australian salmon you need to come to the South West in WA😊
I know these ones are huge for VIC but prob tiny for WA a mate of mine lives there and shows me pics of how good the salmon fishing is that way.
Hey mate it’s me Linkin I’m the kid you spoke to
Awesome !! Was great to meet you, shame the salmon slowed down at the end there.
I'll be there from the uk beginning of October. Will the salmon still be there and is there any tackle/bait shops in Lorne?
Yay a land based vid! Thank you!
Hope you enjoyed it! Hoping to get a few more of these coming now
Some more land based content would be great for your channel as it’s the easiest way to get a rod in the water and probably the most common. And with the great knowledge you share it’s more relevant to the beginners that follow along.
Sounds good, its a bit of a priority at the moment. So hopefully we can do more land based stuff like this
Great video Allan long time follower Could I ask what tide do you fish and type of plastics also surf beach fishing
Thanks Rob !! Honestly with this vid we didn't even look at the tides, we just left in the morning and arrived at 8.30am and were done by 11.30. This time of year you often get good schools of salmon in close in that entire region, the plan was to fish there and if it was quiet try the beaches on the way back. I often fin the bite will go quiet slack tide but mid tide up or down seems to be fine when your well out on a pier and still fishing good depths. The plastics I was using were 4 inch paddletails in whites and natural colours rigged on 1/2, 1/4 and 1/6 ounce.
What a great video! Could've been scripted :)
Thanks for the upload.
Hey Alan, what rod length is best suited for land based Soft Plastics fishing?
In this video I was using 7 foot rod, But I have since gone out and bought a Shimano Dialuna 8 foot rod which I think would be perfect for this sort of stuff. Much of this will depend on what species your targeting and what plastics or lures your casting
Nice video mate keep it up where is the pier located?
Thanks, Its Lorne Pier
haven't been out for a while - was thinking of having a quick flick this weekend off a pier if the weather permits. Is it time to put the paternoster and the pilchards away and focus more trawling soft plastics or stirring up some gars?
Gars 100% are fishing well right now so that's an option, I've been doing a bit of land based fishing lately and the soft plastics have been far more productive on the pinkies, trevally and salmon., but I'm sure you can still catch plenty with paternoster rig and bait
@@fishingmad Thanks! Is the top of the bay still worth it or better to head further down like Mordy, Frankston, Mornington, etc? I had some good fun with pinkies around Webb Dock during the summer but don't know much about how far up the bay various species push when the water starts to cool.
Alternately, I am a Fishingmad Member if you can point me to the appropriate page 👍
Always feel free to send me an email directly yo alan@fishingmad.com.au and I can provide you with a really detailed answer to get you onto some productive areas, personalised to where you fish
@@fishingmad Thanks Alan, will do.
Any trout or Redfin spots near Melbourne that you would recommend
Heaps of good trout and redfin spots, which side of Melbourne are you on. Just as an example got places like pykes creek, Wurdibuloc res, Devilbend, lake fyans as some great options. Some really helpful articles on this on the FishingMad website.
Thank you, I’m in north Melbourne (Coburg) if that helps
Hi Alan, what the rod cast weight rating to get the most cast distance??
Its a really tricky thing at locations like this and much will depend on how you like to fish. I was using a light 2-5 kg rod and was really pushing the limits casting with 1/2 and 1/4 ounce which is really the max lure weight of those rods. You could fish like that which is really enjoyable or you could use a light surf rod which can handle heavier lures and long casting metals. After this trip I bought a Shimano Dialuna which is coming in the mail that might be perfect for this sort of stuff.
👍
What pound line and leader where you using.
Hi Alan really sad about Andres being killed on our Frankston pier how do we deal with this 😢
It's tragic, So sad. A valued member of our fishing community out minding his own business fishing on a pier doing what he loves, has his life taken in a completely unprovoked attack. My deepest condolences to his family and friends and hope this rallies the fishing community together.
When did musta fishing become Alan’s camera man
hey mate, was this at high tide? thanks
I honestly didn't pay to much to the tides that day. We rocked up around 8.30am, was slow for the first 30 minutes and then went berserk. This time of year should be plenty of salmon and trevs around
@@fishingmadthanks mate appreciate it
No probs !! As long as the seal isn't around it should fish well, and I must also say that those fishing with bait had very little action that day, so plastics well worth a shot.
Was this at high tide?
I didn't pay to much attention to the tides, its deep enough at the end. Just rocked up mid morning and fished for a few hours
@@fishingmad awesome, have a good one
Locals?? 😂😂😂 No Locals fish on the Lornr Pier fella
