in the war of 1990, we used oil, but instead of salt, we poured ordinary water, and we put a shoelace through the crust of bread as a fuse and put it on the oil to float, that's what we used instead of candles
Wow very interesting! Thanks for sharing.
May I ask what you mean by putting a shoelace through a CRUST or bread?
@@sarahsincerely2.0 I would guess the the actual bread crust, soaks up less moisture than the bread, but i am only guessing here
@@MindMoulder and bread crusts float well, as anybody who has fed ducks in a pond can attest.
Clever, or a slice of a cork from a wine bottle with a hole in it would do it. With a floating device and the twig underneath, you can pour a little water in the bottom, then oil on that. This cools down the oil so the glass wont crack. Also, its safe. When the oil runs out, the cork sinks and the twig reaches the water and puts out it self.
You don't need salt at all. Where I come from, years ago, we were losing power every other day, sometimes for days, so mom used to make candles using cotton and oil. It's just a piece of cotton soaked wet twist between two fingers and light it up. It will burn for hours. And we also had a lot of mosquitoes, so before turning the light on, my mom would smudge the light bulb with oil and then turn the light on. All the mosquitoes would stick to the bulb. In the morning, mom would just wipe the bulb off. Worked like a charm
That's the good news for mosquito prone areas. Thanks
Yeah, the salt is just holding the wick in position as far as I can tell.
Wow!thank you for the awesome information.
I love that tip about oil on the bulb! All natural! Thanks!
Sending regards to your mom
I've just tried it and it works!! 😊🌟🌟🌟😍💕🙏Thank you so much!! I didn't use salt, I just coiled a wire to sit at the bottom of a glass jar and used a cotton rope around the wire soaked in sunflower oil. At first, the flame made its way down slowly and I was thinking that it would die once it touches the oil inside the jar but no! The flame is now steady and it is a big flame sitting on top of the oil. (I tried it before with margarine but the flame just died as soon as it touched the margarine!!). I'm overjoyed that I have finally got it right!! I have put it inside my iron Woodburner and ill wait to see how long it lasts!! Thank you loads!! 🙏💕🌟☃️❄️🌨️ (as gas prices are up, I appreciate having a constant burning flame around the house!!)
Just to update you... I advise everyone to use these oil candles outside for the garden, etc. I used it indoors and this morning I found black soot in my nose... So, I will not use it indoors again with my son. But great for outdoor parties! 🎂🌟🎉🎉
Haha, that was funny. But you are right it has that black soot. Also your idea on using coiled wire was brilliant! I’m glad you found this video useful.
@@HungrySciANNtist2020 I wonder which metal works best for a coil and how yo make it?
Flicker of Hope ✨🌼🏵️
@@TheThreeMountains same experience here. And they smell too.
Oh my. A perpetual candle? Wow. Thank you for sharing this, ms Ann.
As a wick, you may use a piece of cotton shoelace
(not synthetic) stuck in a paper clip to keep it vertical.
Won’t a paper clip burn?
@@carlosonliones202 the paper clip is made out of metal usually so my best guess is that it wont
@@carlosonliones202and possibly release gases. Use pure copper or pure aluminum metal's which don't release any gas fumes.
The flame is restless and will smoke. The oxygen to burn collides with the hot air from the flame. Try a lower glass and let the wick stick out over its rim.Greetings
Butter burns cleaner then oil.
No black soot on wall's or ceiling's.
We have been using oil and cotton wick lamps🪔 in the Hindu & Buddhist Temples and also our homes for centuries in India and the neighbouring countries ! 😀.
The wooden stick in the wick is also an option if the lamp is so designed with a small hole to fit it in . Butter is preferred to oil as it doesn't create black soot in the ceiling or wall .
The salt is however a new concept .
Would this then be called a _butter lantern?_ 😊 When Queen Elizabeth II passed away, someone shared in a comment section that the king and queen of Bhutan had lit a number of butter lanterns in her honor.
WOW... I did not know you could use BUTTER... I love candles but the Black Soot kills me... gives me a terrible headache.
Thank you for this information...
I also know the WICK is important... Where can I buy Good Wicks?
Уље не ствара чађ већ лош фитиљ.
I totally agree with you. Salt unheard of. Its a simple diya and they made a video out of it.
Did you use butter or ghee?
I've used old cooking oil for outdoor lamps....one time my neighbor thought were eating a lot of french fries. 😅
😂😂
I used to get The Fray off of my jeans and then roll it in my hands dip it in wax and then pull it out and let it dry makes wonderful wicks
I THINK☝ A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL APPRECIATE YOUR VIDEO CAUSE OF OIL AND GAS CRISIS COMING UP..😄....I CERTAINLY LIKED IT A LOT CAUSE I LOVE TO BURN CANDLES AND SINCE CANDLES ARE ALSO BECOMING EXPENSIVE I LOVE THIS IDEA OF A SALT BOTTOM AND OIL + WICK GIVES U A NIGHT FULL OF COZINESS DURING COMING WINTER👏....😄😜...🐛🌷❤Si Netherlands
How extraordinary!! Loved this lamp
very useful..easy and quick to make
What a treasure DIY, Thank you for sharing this ❤
Great idea! Must have a try!
A brilliant video.
You can use marbles instead of salt too, they are pretty, infinitatly reusable, and then you aren't using up salt!
Oh yes I really like this one! They should catch the light and not only look pretty but help disperse it. I'm going to have to try this one soon!
You're telling me marbles won't crack from the flame.
Or perhaps pebbles?
Or clean dry sand?
Thanks Linking this to a Be prepared Video!
Great idea👍💡 thanks for sharing
😍
This is a life saver my power just went out im useing data right now. With this oil lamp i know have light
No need to waste salt. Just fill half jar with water. Next add oil. Oil will float on water. Insert small cotton wick and burn. 😄😄😄😄
Better still find a small round metal holder - a wick holder from a tealight works - and punch a TINY hole in it, just bit enough for the wick to come through. Then float that on the surface and it holds the wick in place. You can also use plastic, I've seen that done as well, and you can make very decorative ones with shells/flowers etc in the water [add food colouring if you want to] before putting the oil on top. They were very fashionable to buy/use about 7-10 years ago.
The plastic tape was a genius idea. Gotta love smell of it once the wick is half way through. lol
not good to inhale it.
The flame doesn' t have to reach the plastic tape and burn it as long as we have made sure it's inside the salt level. Of course using a long stick -if you can find one-is more convenient.
Would a wooden chopstick work?
Great idea, have to try it. Maybe layer different colors of sand to make it a bit more decorative.
WOW!!! Thanks keep it Simple Sweetheart
Thank you for sharing your video ❤
Hehehe good idea for stay in the farmhouse
SUPER IDEA...THANKS
Wow this is so beautiful idea
Yes😍
Lovely video
Used 80% water, and add 10Grams salt, turmeric powder 1taple spoon, after used, this is effective method and your house safe and remove all negative energy, every think attract positive engry .. all good successful in your life...
use a wooden barbecue stick, it's longer and safer compared to binding the sticks with scotch.
you can also roll all together a paper shit and a handkerchief on the outside layer: the paper will strengthen the wick and the handkerchief will absorb the oil.
know that used oil will smell a lot and your home will have a (fries or else) scent. but if it's an emergency just do as you can.
This is such a useful idea, Thank You for sharing✌
This is great its so much better than burning toxic scented candles.
Amazing will definately try
😍
Fabulous ❤️ Thank You 🙏

Excellent thank you. 👍 God bless you.
So Beautiful! Thank you very much!
Wow. Blessings

Wow supev
Very Nice that used salt and made that. Thanks to you
Nice job 👍
Clever idea
Good video, except don't use plastic tape to tape sticks together - it may produce toxic fumes when burning. Instead either use paper tape or use longer grill sticks.
Thanks for the idea. I’ll surely do next time.
Longer grill stick is banned by Donald Trump.

Thank you. Wishing the same to you.
good vidiyo tanks
Ah! the salt holds the wick
part up! so clever!
Wow Going to make one right now thanks
Perfection
🙏,for this idea.
Love it ❤️
Nice.
👏👏👏👏amei obrigada.
I liked it!
In an emergency, two of the most precious things - salt and cooking oil - used to make light. Clever trick, but expensive after a disaster! I'd rather go without that kind of light, than do without cooking oil and salt. Still, clever if it's in abundance.
Very good👍
Thank you!
Very good
Thank you so much 🤗🙌🙏❤🤗🙌🙏❤
Instead of wasting salt use cotton drawstring 2 inches more then the height of the jar.
make a tight fitting hole in the lid of jar from inside in X shape and bend the four cutting outward to top side of lid to secure the cotton drawstring wick fill the jar and light the lamp
What works really well for cheap wicks is the cotton mop replacements. I get mine from the $ store. $2 for a lot of wicks. Coconut and olive oil burn clean!
Thanks
awesome
Yes😍
you are great
Yes😍
Thanks 🙏👍
Great way to use up old oil!!😄
You can also make a pretty good candle by using an old recycled can, bacon grease, and a twisted up paper towel. It smells like bacon but burns for a while.
Thank you 🙏💖
Wow 😳
thanks 🙏
How ingenious!
I wonder if coarse sand could replace the rock NaCl if no salt was available? Will give it a try.
Ron Brown in his book Olive Oil Lamps says dry sand works well.
I turned this on with head phones thinking I’d walk away and listen to the instructions 😂😂😂
😂
We are doing that ever since, years ago....specially in typhoon times...
Nice
Yes😍
Very good work from you. 😉👍👍
❤️From Qatar
Yes😍
You can also use baby oil , as a wick you can use a rizla paper, screwed tight , soak most in the oil
Just leave alittle dry on top, you have a light and an air freshener 😉
( old prison trick )
Love and light ❤🙏❤
Why does it has air freshener? Is it because of the baby oil?
@@katrinaangelapurca4683 нет,эта свеча освежитель воздуха ( если в туалете зажечь спичку, или кусок бумаги ,свечу ,то исчезает неприятный запах )
mentioning baby oil and old prison trick in the same sentence might conjure up some images that you don't wish to? Or many you do?
This would be ok for short use during an emergency, but too stinky and smokey for prolonged use.
Depends on the oil
Thank you
How long it will last?
Kam raraba ao are I eta ami Channel aio very nice experience
I tried it without using oil it still works, salt is a good fuel
Super cool and immensely useful. Thanks for this👏👏👏👏👏
😍
🙏👏👏
You can also use a small cotton cloth and formed it into a string.
So the salt purpose is to support the wick
Good
I think the reason why salt is being used aside from oil is because salt drives away bad spirit😮
👍👌 may be addition of fragrance oils or citronella oil help in a way too
Please, be careful not to use synthetic fragrances as they could poison the air you breath, should you use the candle indoors… for example in the Northern hemisphere during winter.
