The soft point ammo has a shorter overall length and the bullets move forward in the magazine. The modification to the BAR magazines that make it hold open on the last round, is by a lever protruding through a hole in the back of the mag. This usually happens when the follower passes by, and the lever is held back by the heads of the rounds in the mag. Soft point ammo moves forward just enough to allow the bar to protrude enough to actuate the bolt hold open.

What an absolute Beast. There's a lot to be said about an '06 even on the shooting range people shooting 308 to 5.56 9 mm and then someone breaks out the 06. It startles most people. You can see the grass in front of the concussion wave that it produces. Unfortunately ammo is insanely expensive.

People overlook older designs too easily.
Both the Soviets and the Americans shifted from belt feds towards magazine fed automatic weapons - the RPK & M27 IAR respectively.
The Americans now want something lighter than .338 lapua magnum.
...30 M1 was a 174 grain boat tail with a supersonic range well past 1000 yards.
In fact, the M2 was adopted because the M1 exceeded the safety range on all us training facilities.
Since then, the shorter, more efficient .308 could be loaded into smaller and lighter weapons.
The BAR was/is a long action weapon system - .300 win mag, .300 PRC, etc... in an automatic rifle that could be fired from the shoulder.
Those are serious cartridges loaded into machineguns - and every infantryman had a semi automatic fighting rifle chambered in it.

      Yes that is true.
It was a rethorical question but I guess the large calibre = powerful really comes from the world war time, when increasing (penetrative) power meant ever growing projectile diameters (Tanks from 20 to 120 mm over 20 years).
Until they figured out that sub-caliber projectiles have vast advantages in aerodynamics and penetration power.
However there are german anti tank rifles in hunting rifle calibre, which sounds unbelievable but utilizes exactly these principles.
Of course these have ridiculously large shell casings and powder amounts, but fit a 7,62 bullet.
Looks bizarre but the smaller the penetrator, the less armor has to be cut through.

The .308 and 7.62 NATO were designed to replace the "long action" Garand and 30-06 BAR with the "short action" M-14. The shorter cartridge and short action M-14 enabled squad riflemen to carry slightly more ammo and the action cycled slightly faster than the BAR. The M-14 was also several pounds lighter than the BAR behemoth. But there is a slight ballistic coefficient advantage of the 30-06 slug over the .308, depending on bullet weight. Also, the 30-06 can be loaded to higher pressures than the .308, resulting in faster terminal velocities, longer flatter trajectories, and several hundred foot/pounds of energy advantages over the 308. I own a Springfield M1A SOCOM but am also interested in the HCAR because for all practical purposes it is a replacement for the legendary BAR which is the beast that started all this. Also, sometimes when you can't find .308/7.62 NATO ammo, you'll always be able to find 30-06 ammo, because its been manufactured since 1905, albeit now with modern primers and powder. Finally, reloading equipment and materials for 30-06 exist almost everywhere in the US and this caliber is mostly associated (in the minds of ATF and gun-grabbers) as a hunting cartridge, and not as an "assault rifle" cartridge. So I think the 30-06 flies under the radar better than 5.56 NATO or .223 and .308/7.62 NATO.
Thank you for this entertaining and eye opening video! Really enjoyed it. Awesome!

Also, the 30-06 can be loaded to higher pressures than the .308, resulting in faster terminal velocities, longer flatter trajectories, and several hundred foot/pounds of energy advantages over the 308"
Everything you stated is right on the money. The 30-06 is, at least for most military and firearms historians, the most-significant center-fire rifle cartridge of the 20th century. There are other contenders, of course, for all of those fans of the 7.92x57/8mm Mauser and .303 British cartridges.... but the '06 makes a great case for itself. The BAR - which saw service at the end of WWI (John Browning's son, Val, entered the Army and taught men how to use his dad's invention properly), was relatively anachronistic by the time of WWII and Korea. No quick-change barrel, no ability to feed from belted or linked ammo, etc. - but that thing hit harder than a freight train. Which is one reason the GIs & Marines loved 'em.
The military never did utilize the extra case volume of the 30-06 - which is a long-action cartridge case - to its fullest extent, which is why the 7.62x51 NATO (.308 Winchester in civilian form) was shortened 12mm. Dues to advances in propellants after the war, the new M80 Ball/FMJ round matched the ballistic performance of M2 Ball/FMJ 30-06, both of which utilized 147-grain to 150-grain full-metal jacket projectiles at around 2,800 fps.
Modern reloaders and ammo makers, however, can do great things with the 30-06, if they select the proper propellants and bullet designs. Either for hunting or tactical use. Of course, tactical use is a non-starter since the Army has gone to 300 Win-Mag next up in power above the .308. But you can get near-Magnum performance out of the -06 if you do your homework. There's really not a lot the old girl can't do.....

@@brandonbowerstx I know all about the 35 Wheelen and I also build custom rifles with 25 years of this.
I also build custom AR 10 uppers in odd cartridges and have done AR 10 uppers in 35-284 win that can match the 35 Wheelen.
      I just did a AR 10 upper in 375-325 WSM .
I own a CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser that exceeded the performance of the 35 Wheelen.

The only reason I just did a AR 10 upper in 308 I believe sooner or latter America is going to have a civil war is coming so I want a 308 to buy military ammo that is easy available now.

I think it’s a great rifle if you have to worry about large intruders aka polar bears. Alaskans are known for favoring large caliber handguns like the .454 Casull and .10mm.
I think they should brand it as the “Alaskan AK”
