On August 6, 1914, at the call of the Main Ukrainian Council headed by Kost Levytskyi, the formation of the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen began in Lviv - the first Ukrainian military formation in the Austro-Hungarian army. At that time, more than 10,000 volunteers responded to the call, but the government allowed only 2,500 soldiers to be armed. During the swearing-in ceremony, they all swore allegiance to the Ukrainian people.
The Legion of Ukrainian Riflemen became a real school of the Ukrainian military elite. Its fighters were the initiators of the November Order, fought in the ranks of the Ukrainian Galician Army and the Active Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, and participated in significant events for Ukrainian history. Women also fought alongside men.
The new historical video of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance tells about the historical phenomenon of the UCC and its influence on our history, past and present.
