- Hi everyone!
Today I'm answering one of my most common knitting machine questions - can cotton be used in the knitting machine? This is literally my first time ever trying it, so let's find out together!
Enjoy!

I've had great success with 100% cotton on my addi 46. I love the effect that cotton gives. Just have patience and go slow. Even tension is required. Starting with waste yarn is a must, that will help with uniformity in the first few rows of the main body. Anyway, to each their own. :)
Thanks. Saved me from spending money on a knitting machine since I only knit with cotton.
I had no trouble at all with the Sentro machine and you could try weighting the first rows down with small weights or clothes pegs/pins
Bedankt om dit te delen, ik moet mijn machine nog ontvangen. Kom veel lezen hier. đđđđ
Thank you for showing us what precisely happens when you use 100% cotton. Really good to know!
Thanks so much for watching! â€ïž
I tried fine merino wool on my 48 knitting machine, and the result was similar to what you are showing. Then tried the same yarn doubled (feeding from 2 different balls of yarn) and the result was lovely :-). However, I am not sure if it's going to be the same with cotton.
I came across an Addi owner that actually had no problem knitting with cotton!
m.youtube.com/@YayForYarn
She used mercerized cotton crochet yarn (size3). This is a very thin yarn giving an airy end result that would be great for summer scarves.
Iâve hand knitted a lot with unmercerized cotton (to make wash clothes) and felt how strongly it sticks to the needle. Maybe thatâs why mercerized cotton goes well in the machine?
Iâm not good enough in English to explain my next point, but I believe that the lack of stretchiness in cotton, can be helped by the fact that you are using a much thinner yarn than you should. The thread have much more wiggle room on the plastic needles when itâs very thin, and I think thatâs why it works.
If only thin mercerized cotton goes with the machine, there are so much we canât make. I wish the manufacturers could solve that problem!
Donât use any tension on the cottonâŠusing tension is causing your issue, also static electricity is a bit problem with these machines.
I tried 100% cotton on my Sentro a while ago. Disastrous result, definitely wouldn't try again. Thanks for the great informative video.
My pleasure!! Thanks for watching đ
I just bought this machine thinking of using cotton but yeah it doesn't look good unless is a really thick cotton đ I'm loving to use the velvet yarns though
Can you test a luxe roving merino wool yarn?! For example malabrigo, ovciously a thinner weight but i use alot of yarn like that and am wondering if it would work! Thanks :)
Thanks for showing us this. JUst yesterday I asked about cotton yarn on a fb group some say you can and they make wash cloths and others say it doesn't. I didn't think i'd get a good result due to no stretch or bounce back.
Unfortunately I didnât have any success đđŒ
I made a small hat with cotton but it was very stretched out and not re-shapable - had to push the stitches down on the red bumps to prevent the dropped stitches
Wondering if it might be helpful to rinse the cotton ball in fabric softener diluted with water and spun and dried
I wonder if weights would help prevent dropped stitches?
I would love to see wool or mohair tested on this machine!
Do thin yarn use in knitting machine 48
I'm allergic to acrylic, polyester, nylon, etc.
I've been using cotton and wool on my machine and I use 4mm stranded cord.
Could you try 100% bamboo or bamboo mix? Also, what do u feel about cotton mix yarn?
I actually tried this last night. It's bizarre how different it looks to me, doesn't look like it's the same machine making it lol đ definitely a no for me
It would be ok for market produce bags.
I tried using blanket yarn and my machine had a really hard time đđđ now I know what not to try on my machine.
I use 100% cotton to make dish rags using my 22 Addi no problem.
Thatâs amazing! Which cotton do you use?
cotton is not stretchable, which is why it does not work on the machine, the yarn, for example acrylic yarn, is, which is why acrylic is excellent to use. with cotton yarn you can even break the machine. Fortunately, there is a lot of variety in yarn available other than cotton đ you can make masterpieces with the machine and the right yarn â€
Iâve tried in my sentro but it seemed a little spaced compared to acrylic wool. Plus too many dropped stitches. Bit of a nightmare
Hobbi HObi is a DK size yarn...what if you use a Worsted Cotton? or a Worsted Cotton/poly yarn?
I wouldnât recommend cotton at all because it has no stretch. A blend might be ok
I had the same problem with cotton yarn even using weights to hold it down. Not worth the aggravation..
I agree! Haha
How about a cotton blend?
I think a blend would work much better!
I also tried cotton and failed miserably I prefer using only Canon simply soft and lion brand basic stitch.
Acrylic is definitely the winner for me! đ
NĂŁo tem como fazer as legendas em portuguĂȘs
I have no problem using 100% cotton.
How does it go with 100% wool?
Iâll have to give it a go!
I too would like to try 100% wool but canât find any examples of it being used on the SENTRO. Iâm an absolute beginner.
Have you tried using a double strand?
I havenât! But I am very confident it wouldnât work haha
I tried double stranding but the needles don't catch both the stands at times. It ends up being a total mess.
I would stick to acrylic.
What made you feel cotton yarn would not work in the Addi King?
Itâs got no stretch so becomes very tight on the machine. I donât think cotton would work well on any knitting machine đđŒ a blend might be ok
@@Katieree : We can use cotton yarn when using a flatbed knitting machine.
