As we all know, the "it was all a dream" cliche is the laziest thing a writer can do to a piece of media.
As Brian Griffin once put it, the idea is essentially giving the audience a giant middle finger
"It was only a dream" can work if:
- the characters are convinced it was just a dream, BUT audience knows otherwise (Deltarune chap. 2)
- the plot turns around the charcters emptional issues and inner demons (American McGee Alice)
