Elgg Castle

Elgg Castle in the municipality of Elgg in the Swiss canton of Zurich was originally built as a castle and is located on a hill in the south of the settlement. It was first mentioned in 1166 and was the seat of the Meier Elggs under the Abbey of St. Gallen until 1289. The Habsburgs held court here until 1425, before jurisdiction passed to the Zurich family, who used the building for this purpose until 1798.
In 1576 the castle was acquired by the Zurich bannerman Hans Heinrich Lochmann, who rebuilt it in 1580 and expanded it into a castle. He died childless in Padua in 1590. The Augsburg patricians Hans Heinrich and Hans Ludwig Heinzel von Tägernstein acquired the castle, but had to have it sold by their mother-in-law, Mrs. Magdalena Neidhart, in 1599. In that year the imperial councilor Bonaventura Bodeck acquired the castle and the jurisdiction. He died in 1629 and was buried in Elgg. In 1637, his son Melchior Bodeck sold the castle to the governor Peter Sulzer of Winterthur. His sons got into serious financial difficulties due to speculation and guarantees, so that by 1665 the castle was in a precarious state.
With the help of a fictitious promissory note, the Abbot of St. Gallen managed to acquire the castle. This sparked a long-standing dispute with the city of Zurich, which was only ended in 1670 when Herkules von Salis-Marschlins acquired the castle and was granted Zurich citizenship.
In 1712, the castle came into the possession of Major General Hans Felix Werdmüller, who was in Dutch service. In his will in 1712, he stipulated that the castle and the estate should remain in the possession of the Werdmüller family as an inalienable family trust. It is still owned by the castle today.
The castle's former tithe barn now houses an inn.
