These go to the return and go through the filter before returning to the supply side. Your metal duct looks exactly like this , and a good quality filter will filter out 99%.
..standard metal ducts look just as crappy inside.... you just need to clean them every few years if you have them....and don't locate the grills near the floor, raise them....the dust bunny's hover below 2 feet. The slick cardboard thermo pan works well
This is a big problem in my house. I have had the ductwork professionally cleaned many times and it still looks like this. But my hvac guy said he doesn't want to duct the returns because it's too costly. Looks like I'll have to diy this one...
Good luck with it. Look around for the Thermopan. It is a cold return liner designed to line the wall cavities to prevent this issue. Easy to work with, staples and knife or scissors. We used it on this project too, if you look further down the timeline of this project videos.

They clean ductwork with high pressure vacuums/ air. Can clean these spaces the same way.
That is true. Thank you for watching.

Thanks for uploading.
That’s a lot of build-up! Thank you for showing this real-world example!
Blame the spiders, their webs are catching the dust
