    Ugh, I am right in the middle of this. Thanks for sharing. I laughed watching you find that last screw in the middle of the plastic frame under that middle duct....same as me.

      Thanks my friend, I have a 99 Turbo Beetle that got water damaged (mold and rat nest) and the ignition will not turn into the run position, I'm going to gut the entire interior and replace the heater core and do some upgrades while it's torn out... This surely let me know what's in store... During the assembly process I will fix the ignition and do a double din smart radio and some soft LED lighting

    Good job! I'm going a little farther and opening the HVAC case so I can repair the blend doors... Big dang holes in them, Great idea VW! Lets put holes in wind diverters!

    I did this last Summer. Took me 12 hours but I was able to split the box, not touch the A/C and leave the steering wheel alone. Worst job ever but I taped up the blend doors and the heat is great now.

    There’s no way this side of the good Lords Heaven I’m going to do this, or pay somebody to do this. I will just figure out how to setup a Hair dryer to work off the cigarette lighter, AND if I can’t get that to work I will set a grate on the passenger seat and cover it in aluminum foil and build a fire, and use it also as a grill, that way I can have the best of both worlds aye?

  • @wizbang16
    @wizbang16 Před 3 lety +3

    Great video. I need to do it soon. I have seen some videos where they split the box instead to avoid draining the AC system. Any reason why you did not split the box?
    Also after doing this job is there anything you would do differently? Is the steering wheel absolutely neccessary to take off?

    • @mrtech9709
      @mrtech9709  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks. I didn't split the box because I did check condition of ac evaporator too. If I need to do it again maybe I would split the box. If you don't take off the steering wheel you can't take off a dashboard.

    • @Daileyandrew
      @Daileyandrew Před 11 měsíci

    lol... wow! I helped build Trident and 688 class nuclear powered submarines in the 70's and 80's and after watching this I now understand how they lost 2 world wars! it's like you just wanna slap every German engineer involved designing the location and accessibility of this heater core!! lol haha!

    I think there must be a way to unbolt the top of the dash, drill some holes in just the right place to move the dash bar, and drop the glove box to make room for the HVAC to drop.
    Anyways, I was stripping mine for a roll cage so I just used a sawzall for whatever had more than 3 screws.

    God help me. I’m getting ready to do this on a 2005 VW Beetle convertible. This is not going to be fun. But not paying a shop $1800 to do a 52 dollar part.

    • @kevinj6874
      @kevinj6874 Před 2 měsíci

      Update. Took about 18 hrs. I took my time and labeled everything and bagged screws for each part. The worst part is the driver side airbag and getting all of the plugs out of the turn signal/wiper/cruise-control to get the major large part of the dash off. Putting it back together was very quick only 2 1/2 hrs. I will trash this car or bypass the heater core if this happens again not going through this again.

      if no heat then sounds like something else... a heater core issue would cause a coolant smell when heat is on and also fog up windows
