- Pat Kenny is joined by John Mooney (The Sunday Times) to discuss last night's protests at a site that has been earmarked for housing asylum seekers in Newtownmountkennedy Co. Wicklow.
Five people have been charged following a protest in Newtownmountkennedy on Thursday night.
It comes after the Public Order Unit was called to a house in Co Wicklow which had been earmarked for use as accommodation for asylum seekers.
Six people in total were arrested last night following the deployment of the Public Order Unit.
Three men and one woman have been charged with public order offences and are due in court later today.
Another man was charged in relation to the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act. He is due in court at a later date.
A teenage boy who was arrested has been released without charge, with a referral being prepared for the Youth Diversion Project.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris spoke after visiting the site in Newtownmountkennedy where three patrol cars were also damaged.
"There were very unacceptable scenes seen here in terms of a protest, which then turned to violence," he said.
"We've seen an attempt to burn a small outhouse type premises, but also then disgracefully attacks on members of An Garda Síochána who were attacked with stones and indeed vehicles have been damaged, and one vehicle, the vehicle behind me, was damaged with an axe.
"As we can see with a normal patrol vehicle, both front window and the rear window have been smashed with an axe, not a hatchet, a full size axe.
"And also then we've had another vehicle lights broken and the Public Order vehicle with its tyres slashed."
Commissioner Harris said there were also "attempts to injure members of An Garda Síochána".
"Rubble and stones were thrown from fields and members had to deploy in protective public order equipment and shields to make sure that they could protect themselves from the assaults upon them," he added.

I admit I am a long way from the focus at NewTMK, but I do speak as one who has lived under many regimes, from 1st class democracies to the most degenerate / suppressive autocracies.
The people (the 'NOT-demonstrators'... see above) will get what they want; they will get what they select (paraphrasing ??), and if you select buffoons, you will get buffoonery. Simple as that.
I agree that being 'listened to , that old fashioned idea of democracy' is desirable.... in a democracy, which I understand is a status Ireland aspires to.
So, use the tools of old fashioned idea of democracy; ultimately in the ballot box. Democracy by definition does not offer a fast lane past the ballot box.,
Let me give you one example, and then I will have to have my breakfast.
In a similar situation... the 'people' (who had a similar problem) made a whole string of individual appointments with their representatives.
The queues were large, and persistent, going on over many MANY days.
Quickly the press became involved. And when that happens, you can not believe how fast things moved on. Individual politicians do not like bad press; political parties (like all groupings) can carry it better.
Use democracy.
Resorting, and even allowing, the force of the rabble, will only get you anarchy, and having lived in a democracy where the opposition openly professed and practiced anarchy.... you wont want that.... believe me.

People are living longer and having less children. What that means is the working population will shrink and will be unable to sustain the needs of those that don't work, ie children, school kids, disabled and the elderly. Because of the greed of corporate interests people have been reduced to nothing more than economic units and their sole purpose is to sustain the growth of those interests. People can't afford to have kids and that is by design because parenting is seen as a drain on productivity and growth. So the solution is Replacement Migration from poorer regions to maintain the illusion of sustainable growth. It matters not a jot whether people have a connection to the country because they are just economic units after all and can be replaced just like a battery as soon as the working life has been drained from them.
