This line was spoken in a television commercial for a medical alarm and protection company called LifeCall, in ads that began running in 1987. The motivation behind these medical alarm systems is that many senior citizens today live at home alone, and may find themselves suddenly in medical danger with no one (and no phone) nearby to help them. The product addressed this concern by providing its subscribers with a small pendant, worn around the wrist or neck; when needed, the wearer presses the button on it, and he or she is immediately put into contact with a dispatcher who can send a paramedic, fireman, or other emergency assistance.
The TV advertisement featured, in part, a fictional elderly lady named "Mrs. Fletcher" who has fallen, with her walker, in the bathroom.
On its face, the commercial illustrates a serious situation for a senior with dire consequences (elderly people with no one to care for them may fall in their homes and be on the floor for hours or even days, unable to get help).
The "I've fallen and I can't get up" ad had the double misfortune of being unintentionally campy and appearing often on cable and daytime television. The combination made "I've fallen... and I can't get up!" a recognized, universal punchline that applied to many comedic situations. All of these factors made the ad memorable, ensuring the line's place in pop culture history.
I remember laughing at this commercial when I was a teenager. I'll be 50 in a couple months and I hope in my case what goes around doesn't come around.

As someone who has worked for personal care. They just die. You be surprised how many people just die because they are too old and alone.

It’s hard as a youth to imagine ever getting old, so it’s easy to be flippant about these things but elderly people being so socially isolated is a very big problem and this sad reality of social isolation in old age might touch any one of us one day. I’m looking into volunteering with the elderly some how, because they have the most interesting things to share if they are given the chance.

It’s just hard when they pass though, one special elderly friend’s passing recently is what prompted me to want to volunteer. He relocated overseas and I was organising to visit and he passed suddenly. I truly miss the amazing conversations I use to share with him.

I don't believe that this was in any way meant to be funny. Unfortunately, the acting is horrendous!!! I laugh not at what the lady said, but how she said it. The commercials today use this line, but the tone is much more serious.

I am so thankful for companies like this. I have Life Alert and it has saved my life. I was looking at apples at the farmer’s market when my shoes got caught on uneven ground. Down I went! My happy day at the farmer’s market quickly turned into my worst nightmare. Luckily, I pressed my life alert button and received help. I have a few bruises but will heal in time. I am forever grateful.
