I’ve heard or read comments by parents whose children had a huge personality change, while in college.

I come from an immigrant family and I can confirm 100% that the narrative in our household regarding Americans was not one that established coexistence. It was about resisting YOUR western ways and making sure we preserved our culture and religion. My question to my family was often, "Why did you bring us to America if you were going to force us to live like we were in our home country?" The answer was, "Money, luxury, infrastructure." Can't get clean water or electricity in most places in the world. Why bother with infrastructure when all the money can be spent on defending your belief system? It's common sense. :)
