  • TODAY'S VIDEO: The Beginning of the End for NCT: Why SM Entertainment is ending their 'infinite expansion'
Hey guys I'm baaaack! Time flew away from me and before I knew it March was over. This is a topic that came up while I was gone, but I didn't really see that many people talking about it which shocked me because I think this is such an interesting topic!
In February 2023, SM Entertainment announced that they would be ending their infinite expansions concept, meaning that there will not be any new members or subunits added to NCT after the addition of NCT Tokyo...
So in this video, we are going to be taking a look at what SM ending NCT's infinite expansions concept, what this could mean for the group and fans (both positive and negative), why SM are changing NCT's concept (or so they say), and why I really think SM might be doing this...
Please note that these are just my opinions on the topic, I am in no way affiliated with SM Entertainment, I'm simply just a fan of the group who wanted to share my opinion on this situation!
I am in no way intending to direct any hate or negativity towards our boys.
Thank you so much for watching, I really hope you enjoy this video! If you do, please give it a thumbs up, and I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic in the comments.

The limitless concept was a great idea like mixing members for NCT U makes things so much fun. But on paper, it’s just hard managing the overlap and you see it with Mark and Haechan. And it sucks that fans can’t ever experience NCT U songs live unless it’s SMTOWN because there’s no way to manage 23 members on a tour. Sad :(

As much as everyone blows on sm as a management company
they seem to be the best for idols for a long term career. They have the best resources for idols to branch out and see what their other niche is within the entertainment industry. Look at how many current and former SM idols are on variety shows as fixed cast, acting abd even solos

I think the positives and negatives go hand in hand for this situation. I'm not the biggest NCT fan , I would consider myself more a semi-fan than anything else. A reason for this was the "unlimited" members concept. I didn't want to wait for that lineup to be complete or change, so I just kept them at arms length. Even to this day, there are some members that I don't really know (and I use the word "know" in the realm of them being idols/musicians, not as I know them personallly). I know their names and their face, but that's it. Nothing else. Plus, along with the other groups I follow, it just wasn't worth it to me. But now that there's an "end" to the addition of members and units, I can look forward to looking into some members/subunits that I haven't got a chance to really check out.
But I disagree with the fact that NCT will disband. Is there a chance that memebers may leave the group? Yes, that's always a possiblity. However, I don't think it would happen that way unless something big happened to a specific member(s). I would honestly love to see more subunits created from the exisiting ones, like DoJaeJung, especially with members that don't have a lot of exposures compared to others. Especially since some members are going to start their enlistments soon. So, with their being no new members added, doesn't necessarily mean that subunits will stop being created, again like DJJ. Honestly, it's a double edged sword, but I hope that it works out for all the members involved.
Another thing is that with members starting to enlist soon, it would make sense that SME would start to look out for a new boy group. At one point, regardless of whether or not NCT had unlimited members, the general public would get tired of the concept and wouldn't give the newer members the time of day. And when they're added into pre-exisitng units, that's when the hate would ensue. So, with the concept of endless members ending, SM can focus on developing the new boy group so that they different enough from NCT.

I think nct infinite system was destined to end anyway. There are many reasons for it but the biggest one is, sm or any company can't handle managing a huge group like that. Maybe, if sm took lesson from their past and debuted nct under their own label (like label sj or label v) things would be different but for a major company with multiple groups, having a infinite group under their main label is impossible
Second one is, sm failed to notice this is kpop and not jpop, a group like akb48 wouldn't survive in this genre. Every new member came with hate at first, nctzens who witnessed 2018, wayv debut or 2020 probably remembers how every new addiction made fans uneasy, even angry. So to make sure they still got fans, sm had to put existing members in new units but then the new problem arises: members who are in multiple units have to overwork themselves and with common members it's not possible to keep multiple units active at same time. They either have to make permanent changes in lineups (ex: winwin going to wayv from 127) or overwork idols (ex: mark, haechan)
And third one, fans will only cause more problems as more units debut. Right now with 3 units there are already one unit stans who get angry when other units get cbs on and on while their favourite one barely gets anything, this is happening when the unit number is low and most fans stan all units. But imagine if there were 10 units, it would be impossible for a fan to love all units equally. And imagine the outcome from other 9 unit fans when one unit haves a comeback
The problem is, nct was soo man's strategy to global music domination with as little risks as possible. He knew a group with all american members, all chinese members or a group with all european members wouldn't survive (as it's tried before and failed miserably) but debuting them as a unit under nct was basically guaranteed support and already established fanbase. But now chris lee took the chair, his idea is very different and a never ending nct is not profitable for the "new sm" he wants to build
And my thoughts about nct's end is they won't disband, but will lost half of their members and the remaining nct in 5-6 years will be around twelve members. Of course I hope this won't happen but history repeats itself and probably many members in nct will want to have a career on their own instead of living under sm, a company that is infamously known for rejecting job offers without telling their idols and gatekeep group members

SM's "plans" for NCT won't benefit 127 and WayV because they already don't promote them well as it is in comparison to Dream. Considering SM is about to debut this new unit that's going to have mostly very young members, RIIZE, and a new gg and NCT is getting older, I can already see SM going back on their words and throwing 127 and WayV to the side since they already went back on their word about not kicking any members out and keeping nctzens happy.

I am just so worried for NCT 127. Thank you so much for actually talking about this topic. Not many seem to know about this issue.the last good promoted era of 127 was sticker and the last good designed and thought out era was kick it. The so called world tour was a mess, which was frustrating for the artist and especially the fans. To announce a concert 3 weeks in advance is insane, they can be lucky that people were even showing up. It does seem like SM has given up on 127...
They are so incidents of poor planed and bad organisation and negligence, it can not be a coincidence.
The last time the 2baddies album sales were updated was back in October and they are still in the album charts. We will never know their real sales. Besides they did not reported about the billboard entry of Ayyo.
The difference treatments of subunits does not help the case. It shows fans that SM is actually capable of treating and promoting them well but not for their own group.

@@banaduck2445 i meant that in general that all sub units get different promotion and not equal treatment. This one of the main reasons why unit wars are increasing. The common enemy should be SM but nctzen rather attack each other. It is just frustrating to see. Wayv especially is just a weird case, since they are managed by label w and their main market is not Korea. I hope their fan meeting tour goes well and that they promote well in other countries, since they not really doing something in China. The last comeback of NCT 127 was just frustrating in terms of promotions and quality since this might be the last comeback before the enlistment of Taeil and Taeyong. I just don't understand why it is so hard for SM to the bar minimum. All units should get the same resources and opportunities.

Whether or not the original concept is good in theory, SM has proven time and time again that they are unable to execute it well, so ultimately, I'm glad they removed it. Both the members and fans have suffered so much from SM's supbar management of the group and concept.
NCT DREAM is a perfect example of this. I've heard (and this may not be entirely accurate) that DREAM was a very last-minute decision, as Haechan was the only vocalist among the eligible trainees for a while, so when Renjun and Chenle joined the company, SM was quick to debut them before they outgrew the youthful concept. This lack of preparation and planning for the debut seriously set DREAM up for failure. For the graduation concept to work, they should have been a lot faster with adding new members and made the lineup more spread out in ages; this would prevent fans from getting too attached to a fixed lineup. Because of this lack of consideration, the members have all suffered a lot. Mark and Haechan have been overworked in two units, when they were originally supposed to graduate from DREAM, and the other members have been underutilized and forced to adjust to constant lineup changes due to the absence of Mark and Haechan during 127 schedules.
They also handled the other member additions and unit debuts very poorly. 127's many lineup changes have caused so much trouble for the members that could have easily been avoided with better planning. First, Doyoung's and Johnny's late addition to the group has never really been explained, but I'm guessing it's because they were supposed to debut with another unit that never happened (again a result of poor planning). I'm not sure how far in advance they planned to debut a Chinese unit, but the addition of Winwin to 127 seems counterintuitive if he was supposed to leave from the beginning. His sudden removal from the group caused so much pain and trouble for the fans and members. Also, I heard (again, this could be wrong) that Jungwoo's addition to 127 was a last minute decision, as he was originally going to debut in WayV, but that didn't work out (I'm guessing because of the political issues between Korea and China). Jungwoo received so much hate for simply joining 127, but this was made much worse with the timing of Winwin's departure, which caused people to accuse Jungwoo of replacing him.
Most recently, SM has failed again with the debut of Sungchan and Shotaro. It's ridiculous that even after 2 and a half years since their debut, they have no fixed unit and hardly any songs to their name. I feel like a lot of this unbalance in the members' schedules could be fixed if NCT U was utilized more. Despite all that SM has fallen short with, I think U is a great idea, but again, it's not being executed properly. With 23 members, there should be absolutely no reason why certain members are being overworked to the point of health issues, and others are sitting around for months on end with no comebacks or schedules.

I wonder what this new development will mean for Sungchan since 1) he isn't in a subunit of NCT, as far as I know he is only a member of NCT as a whole 2) he isn't ethnically Japanese so does that mean he'll be in NCT Tokyo? Also, I get why LSM's original vision was scrapped since it seems flawed. Considering how NCT already has 23 (?) members, plus probably a few trainees meant to be a part of NCT Tokyo, that's ample enough members to make other subunits like NCT DoJaeJung. Hell, they could've utilized NCT U much better than they have until now with the amount of members NCT already has. Still this switch-up does seems eerily foreboding considering a few members are up for enlistment soon. Hopefully they'll get their shit together by the time Taeil and Taeyong enlist.

I've seen NCTzens said "but it is fun to see new trainees getting added to NCT" "It is fun to rotate the members" and such. It kind of feels like they treat NCT members as if they are products only and not as real people who dedicating 1/3 or even half of their life to be debuted and spend the time in idol industry. It is crazy that they stan NCT because of the concept not the music and the members.

Sm has had a history of poorly promoting and not managing artists well, even though they have a goldmine of talent and the most well rounded and holistically trained artists , they couldn't promote them well . I am pretty sure if exo was promoted in the west and if their enlistment was planned better (like how hybe has done with Jin recently - even though he is not with the group, yet you get regular video messages from him every month, plus all solo albums , which makes BTS still very much active for the fans) exo could have had a similar fan base as BTS worldwide. Yes they are popular in Asia but to be known globally there is no choice but to promote in America . Sm practically fucked up exo and nct's popularity due to poor management. I think they are still working on the principle of just good music , not realising that k-pop is now half music and half PR . So what if u have good talent , if u don't promote them well, it's of no use . And hybe did exactly that , BTS are a bunch of very talented individuals but they are not the best in the industry, i can name many idols who sing and dance and rap better than BTS but are not as popular as them. It's abt promotions. The way sm treated nct, it boils my blood to see their fucked up schedules without a definite agenda it seems . If nct was promoted properly, even for the first 5 years, those men would have been at par with seventeen if not BTS . Take enypen for example, not even 3 years in debut and yet performed at Kyocera dome for 2 days at sold out shows ! Now that's popularity (they are under hybe group) , And nct gets to preform there after 7 years ! Are u kidding me ! & Not to mention new jeans & their popularity (another hybe group)
with the total amount of talent that they have , they should have won atleast a bbma or ama by now . But well ,.only if sm promoted them properly. The head of planning and a&r at sm should be fired imo . Bighit made a group of talented ppl into a supergroup not just by making good music right, it was also abt managing their activities. And look where they are now - one of the biggest the world . And sadly sm after having two very talented bunch of men - exo and nct couldn't do justice to the talent they have .
This is controversial but i was hoping that if hybe did takeover sm , they could have atleast appointed someone better for the groups' PR and Management since they have a a very well demonstrated history of doing that , but sadly ...
hoping for sm 3.0 to clean the mess that sm was before and treat and promote artists better and get them on the global map asap.

I think you're spot on. Lee Sooman enforced his idea but the company wasn't built to manage such a concept and the workers probably hadn't a single clue how to manage it (like not only Sungchan and Shotaro, but Kun and Ten stayed unitless for 3 years). So as soon as he was out, they got rid of it. I think they're still struggling with what they were left with. Dream was too popular in Korea to get rid of, the money maker, but then 127 also got popular with Kick It so they couldn't change their line-up either. Mark and Haechan got permanently attached to 2 units, which means that promoting one will harm the other. Since then SM always had to choose between 127 and Dream, pitting their fandoms against each other as a result. Given their age, SM should have taken Mark and Haechan out of 127 before NCT got huge in 2020/2021 (and put Ten in 127 to appease fans). The WayV members could have been added to 127 or debut with Shotaro, Sungchan, Eunseok, Seunghan... Like Ten, Kun and Winwin in 127. Yangyang, Xiaojun and Hendery in the new unit. The Chinese, Japanese, US units could have been made with the current NCT members for punctual promotions and fun crossovers. The infinite concept couldn't work with fixed units, because they would always have to wait for a decent line-up of trainees before debuting them, just like a regular group, so what's the point. The lack of vision in SM is appaling.

idk the way i see it is they need/want to remove lucas from the group but with it being infinite and the whole “no one can leave” thing with nct, they had to scrap the idea so fans and the general public won’t give sm backlash for going back on their word. the lucas scandal made a really big dent for nct as a brand plus he’s been on hiatus for almost two (2) years now, there’s no way they can just let him back on stage without a proper statement which they haven’t really given.
but since they got rid of the infinite concept they can remove him and have wayv be a 6 member unit officially and then debut sungchan and shotaro along with the 3 rookies by the end of 2023. i refuse to believe that they made the rookies film the whole welcome to nct thing for them to not debut as members eventually, it would be such a huge waste of money and resources.

Nct won't disband ... just because their expansion ended literally isn't way of making them 'disband'. Their contracts end in 2026. We really need to look into first before saying that their expansion will do so ... firstly taeyong stated that he would go and do nct for long term and that he would never leave the stage. Secondly if one member leaves (which I doubt they would do) they wouldn't create a domino affect. Thirdly they can't just leave the company. It's basically impossible to just leave. Fourthly everyone was thinking that exo disbanded due to the lack of comebacks, however this was only because of the military. We do need to look into it more, because people are spreading rumours about nct now and not looking into their contracts or their relationship with SM ...
There are positives about the ending of the expansion
    1. It gives a chance for the current units to promote more
    2. More content (like nct 2020) to happen
    3. Nct u, units happening - DJJ
    4. More solo releases
    5. More protection for the current members
    6. More music for the current units
    7. The nct members having a chance to create their music
    The list goes on ...
Personally I really liked the concept and I'm 50/50, because it was their concept from the start. However, SM was going to do this anyway ... We haven't had a new unit since 2019 with WayV, it was pretty certain that they were going to stop expanding. I think it is a positive, but it was their concept đŸ€·â€â™€ïžđŸ€·â€â™€ïž

It’s illegal for contracts to be more than 7 years. The contracts of members who debuted in 2016 are likely expiring this year, not 2026, so if they decide to not re-sign, they can leave. Idols (esp foreigners) have not re-signed & left SM before, or terminated, which is more difficult. There’s usually only an announcement if they don’t re-sign. If enlistment takes place before the expiration, the contract is paused, so seems longer than 7 years. It’s also not impossible to decide to sign somewhere else for solo activities & be part of group comebacks (Girls Generation). Idk if SM will put in resources to manage 20+ individual careers.

@@emily_taeyong_nct_dream probably not all members are on the same contract lengths. Some have joined new units / groups (Ten has WayV & SuperM) or there may have been revisions with changes to the group (graduation system removed). The arrangement may be different to someone who debuted in 2016 in with NCT U / 127 & hasn’t joined any new units or groups since then.

@@sorrywhooo ten, doyoung, Mark stated that the whole of nct are having their contract renewals in 2026. On twitter there is a thread on about the members renewals and videos showing the nct members talking about it .... Even if they had different contracts, their will be around 2026, because if shotaro and sungchan debuted in 2020 then their contract will be either in 2027 or 2030.

@@sorrywhooo It is technically 'illegal' but with the fact that there are no SM artists who leave the label in a good term except when they reach 10 years old like f(x) girls, Sooyoung Tiffany Seohyun, Lay, and the fact that RV girls still in SM without any notice they renew make me believe that SM still applying the 10 years contracts. Usually in 7th year it is mandatory to 'extend' their contract for 3 more years
