  • Esperance is home to arguably the whitest sand beaches, the most crystalline blue waters and most magnificent granite peaks that you’ll ever experience. For Wayne Gill and his family, living here is just magic.
“The national parks, on the right day, are picture-perfect,” says Wayne. “If you know where to go, you’ll have an unspoiled beach to yourself.”
Inspired by his father, Wayne grew up caring for and nurturing animals, turning it into a career. “It’s a real privilege,” he says of his role as a conservation officer for Esperance’s Parks and Wildlife Service.
The big open spaces allow for a diversity of flora and fauna, many of which are nocturnal. “You don’t get to experience them unless you’re in a role like mine,” says Wayne. One year, for example, Wayne experienced an influx of honey possums (“they’re beautiful little critters”), while this year he’s catching bandicoots for the first time in two years. A wonderful time to visit the region is between September and November, when the wildflower season is in full bloom.
Wayne shares his love of nature with his family, catching snakes and going to the beach. As wife Lisa sees it: “The people are amazing, the beaches are great. My children are lucky to grow up in a town that has so much to offer them.”
