I’m glad Stephen allowed this guy to say how it feels to be his age right now. I have a 19 yo son and he tells me the same thing. He said that people his age don’t think they should have kids. They don’t think they can plan that far ahead or risk other lives.

the generations that grew up knowing the climate science - say 50 years old and under - know that things have to change. And we now know the clock is ticking - we have timelines. It can feel insurmountable, but I have been impressed with how many people are committed to transforming the system - look up circular and doughnut economics. Young people are making a difference - encourage your son to act and he'll find hope. there is so much innovation going on right now, but we need a big mind-shift and the political inspiration to truly make it work..

Honestly as a grandma, I'm terrified for my granddaughter and when my son and daughter-in-law said they wanted another child, I wanted to weep because we've just trashed everything for them and are doing nothing to protect them. I won't be here, and I'm responsible for this shit, too. What kind of lives are we leaving them? I hate us.

When I was very young I always wanted a kid myself, but around 18 I changed my mind seeing where the world was going. I'm 28 now and my boyfriend of years actually broke up with me when I said I didn't want to have a kid because I'm afraid for their future, so it's not just older people who are ignorant or selfish (big chunk though)

Excellent discussion. Climate change has been happening since 70s at least. We were warned then and started talking about it ..Sat in all day discussions/seminars as a young man in CA, lead by the best and brightest.... So few listened to the call to SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT. A young Jerry Brown was called Governor Moon Beam mocking him for his environmental concerns.... Now a crisis is unfolding at a more rapid rate.

I still remember back while I was in high school in the 80's, it was in the news that scientists had discovered a hole in our ozone layer. They said that it was caused by the things we were doing and using, and that unless we changed what we were doing, things like our climate would get worse. Well, that was over 30 years ago and now we are seeing the climate changes they warned us about but we are only starting to make real changes now. I just pray that it's not too late, or else Earth may end up harsh like the other planets in our solar system. Even worse, all humans may cease to exist.

I'm 36 and remember hearing about the rainforests being cut down at 6 years old and how we needed to recycle and all that...parents just laughed....when I was 19 got really into the earth and learning I used to recycle and "preach" if you will (not religious) about what we needed to stop doing to family again and just got political answers. Now, I still have some hope left but without people in power making change I doubt the younger ones will be able to anything but be pissed off before they die. Stop talking about it and act! If all did one or two good acts a day we could save the earth. This isn't about God. It's about the beauty and abundance we live on and could potentially have. Stay safe, be kind, peace yall

My only issue with this is that it's not going to take all of us doing a few things together; It's going to take all of us to yell at the politicians loud enough to tell the companies they have to stop what they've been doing for forever. That is where the hope is lost; we're hinging any significant action on a chain reaction of powerful people with a lot of money to lose. But it's money vs planet now, and it needs to be done.

I'm almost twenty years older than Mendes, and I share his position on climate and doom. I've been watching this mess go completely unaddressed for decades. I am largely sustained by spite, as hope has been off the table for years.

The biggest and simplest thing an individual can do to help fight climate change is to go vegan or whole food plant based. It's really very straightforward and lots of data to back up that animal agriculture as a whole accounts for more deforestation and greenhouse gases emissions than any other industry, even more than transportation. But that doesn't mean this other areas don't need addressed, but just recycling or getting an electric car isn't the answer.
