I love the softness of the quilts I’ve made out of shirts. We used to get a lot of clothes and things free from the leftovers after a big church school rummage sale. Since it’s humid here and hot in summer I’ve saved by making “summer quilts” with no batting. Backed with sheets or yardage and just turn the back to the front for binding. Flannel sheets or fleece on the back I get on clearance after the season. Tie with crochet thread from the dollar. You can do patchwork on a tight budget! Saves my sanity. Too, some days, haha.

Thank you for the kind words. When I started quilting, I used mostly fabric that was gifted to me, fabric I found at the thrift store, or any scraps I could find. I love teaching! Anyone can do this & sometimes we have to be extra creative to fuel our passions. Much Love!
I was just given SEVERAL shirts that were my dads. I want to make memory quilts for all the grandkids and this pattern and your #2 pattern are just wonderful. I can't wait to start cutting up the shirts and maybe (just maybe) having them ready for Christmas. Keep up the good work and great tutorials!

Love this!! What i am noticing though is the thrift stores are charging 7-8$ per shirt!! Thrift stores in my area have become a booming business and so there's rarely a bargain to be found. But i will keep looking!!! I have 4 shirts so far.
A thrift store group in my area has different, 1/2 price tag colors each week. Then, each Sun. that tag color is $1, Mon. it is 75¢, and Tues. is 50¢. Jackpot ! ! !
Wonderful! I will admit that I actually took 2 shirts out of my hubby's closet. I thought they'd look better in my quilt than on him. Shhh, don't tell...
what a good idea. If one use all white shirts for the long strips it would certainly be beautiful too, one would have bigger blocks because the original square would only be cut into 2 triangles and the the whites would not be so stretchy as they will be cut on the straight.
I love "plaid" having grown up in Vermont (the *plaid state* , so to speak). And, I once saw a quilt here on CZcams that looked like "Plaid" when completed. I didn't save it! I have made two quilts made w/plaids, am about to incorporate plaid in another quilt--but, wish I could find that particular quilt that, though NOT made out of plaid fabrics, ended up looking like a stretch of plaid fabric, wondering, with your sensibilities, can you imagine how to make such a quilt?

I get my husband's old shirts when he wears out the neck. Good cotton shirts, and he is a 3-4XL! So a LOT of fabric. A lot of his winter shirts (i.e., long sleeved) are plaids, so I was excited to find this tutorial. A lot of them are striped, however; in fact in my current stash of his old shirts I mainly have stripes, not plaids (there are a lot of plaids in the closet that I'll be acquiring in the next few years as they wear out). I plan to cut a few different squares including some striped fabric to do a "proof of concept" both of the idea in general and for stripes in particular, but what is your take on how well stripes would work in this? How about other types of patterns?
I think it would be worth a shot. The stripes might not always go the same direction depending on what your preferences are. This design would work with any type of fabric motif or pattern. Thanks for watching!
I loved this quilt when I saw it and am in the process of making one. Would you share how many blocks you used width and length and what size it finished? Did you make a scrappy binding from the shirts, too?
Greetings! The binding I used was from a solid cotton fabric, not from shirts. My blocks finished at 4.5" and it is 12 blocks by 12 blocks. It is square for me, but you can make it any size by adding blocks.
If you need it to stick better, stick it in the dryer a couple of minutes and it refreshes it. I'd especially do that when you 1st get it if you have issues with your blocks not sticking 😁
Oh boy love this block. I just cut up 49 shirts. I have 5” and 10” squares. And some strips. Do you think I could cut 2” strip instead of 3/4” because of the size of my blocks?
I'm still reading the part about 49 shirts! That's a lot of shirts!!! I can't think of a reason why you couldn't do 2" strips. Try a sample block and see if it works. Have fun!
I don't have a pattern printed out. I rarely use patterns for my quilts. If you follow the tutorial, you should be able to easily put this together. Each block is made the same way. Thanks for watching!
There are 12 blocks to a row & 12 rows, so 144 blocks. It’s 56” square but of course you can make it bigger by adding more blocks! Thanks for watching 💖
I absolutely love this quilt. My father passed away last week, and this quilt is perfect for the shirts my mom gave me. Can you please tell me about the binding you used. The great thing about it is you can use men's shirts in almost any scrappy pattern and it turns out fantastic! Make sure they are 100% cotton.

What you see is not the binding. It is a thin border made from strips of the plaid fabric.

Thank you for the kind words. Very simply, my design wall is a $4 vinyl tablecloth from Walmart. It has a felt back so cotton fabric sticks to it.

How many shirts do you need for a throw size quilt?
I think 6 would be plenty. I had a mix of sizes. You can get a lot more fabric from an XXL shirt than from a Med size.
