    To me, there is no greater music than Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto in conveying the sound of Russian classical music, with all of its grandness, joy and pathos. And it doesn't get any better than Evgeny Kissin's rendition here. Thank you to all the musicians who performed this timeless masterpiece in this video.

    The first encore is Rachmaninov's well-known Prelude in C# minor, sometimes referred to as "Bells of Moscow." The composer wrote it in 1892 and performed it later that year. It was the first of what would eventually be 24 preludes including every major and minor key. Rachmaninoff didn't think much of this prelude,. Audiences disagreed, and it was so frequently called for that he eventually admitted to being sick of performing it. That didn't stop him from making various recordings of it, including an Ampico piano roll.
    The second encore is Tchaikovsky's "Natha valse," the fourth of six pieces in Op. 51. The six works were composed in 1882, two years after the 1812 overture and three before the Manfred Symphony. The waltz is one of Kissin's favorite encores.
    Left to their own devices, the audience would have undoubtedly encouraged Kissin to play encores all night. Since the orchestra still had Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" Symphony (#6) (included in this video) to perform after intermission, Kissin prudently limited himself to two encores.

      This is just Your subjective opinion. Only composer himself could tell who transcribed his creation the best. Rachmaninov considered Arthur Rubinstein being the best, followed by Emil Gilels. Gilels admired American Van Clybourn, being the best of the new generation, following by Grigory Sokolov. All I’m saying that there are quite a few extraordinary pianists (and Kissin is one of them),whose artistry and talent we can enjoy on YT. YT allows to widen our musical horizons and improve our appreciation for the real mastery.

    This is a totally stunning performance by a fabulous pianist! Mr. Kissin truly captures the bold, unabashedly masculine style of possibly the 20th century's greatest pianist, Rachmaninoff himself.
    There are different approaches to the Russian piano music, but their own unabashed, bold colorful and romantic style of playing is unparalleled rarely by any other in the world. This whole performance is a very marvelous capture of Russian romanticism by a Russian pianist and French orchestra. I would love to have heard this one in person. Imagine hearing this concerto and Tchaikovsky's sixth symphony in one concert!! Thanks to these great musicians for not being afraid of heart felt passionate romanticism captured by two of the most romantic compositions every written! Love it! The violinist, concert master is a rarely handsome gentleman!

    • @stonefireice6058
      @stonefireice6058 Před rokem +2

      Rachmaninov was indeed one of the best pianists of the first part of 20th century and preferred to play his concertos himself…. Until he heard Arthur Rubinstein! Since then Rachmaninov preferred Arthur’s performing his ## 2 and 3, later followed by young Emil Gilels. Gilels brought to fame very young Van Clybourn, whose performances of Rachmaninov were absolutely incredible! Too bad his fame and appreciation of his talent in the US ended too soon.

    Прекрасно чувствует Рахманинова.... Порыв, великолепие к движению, эмоции.... Всё это есть.. Ноя помню его совсем ещё ребёночком кудрявым, очаровательным. Сейчас он так выглядит мощно, но, такой же ранимый, с детской душой, внешне закрыт.... Представляю, как это непросто выходить каждый раз к слушателям и исполнять.... Озорства и лёгкости у него в его природе характера наверное нет, я не знаю его привычек.... Но она бв ему не помешала... Когда выходишь на сцену.... Там должно оставить всё, что можешь каждый раз по разному.... Мне очень нравится дирижёр и его очень самурай ский вид.... А РАХМАНИНОВ.... ВЕЛИЧАЙШИЙ ГЕНИЙ О ОЧЕНЬ РУССКИЙ КОМПОЗИТОР СО СЛОЖНЕЙШЕЙ СУДЬБОЙ, МНОГО БЫЛО В ЕГО ЖИЗНИ СКИТАНИЙ. ВСЁ ЗНАЮТ, ЧТО ЖИЛ ОН ТАКЖЕ И В АМЕРИКЕ.... И НЕ МОГИ ОЧЕНЬ ДОЛГО ПИСАТЬ ТАМ СВОЮ МУЗЫКУ.... НО ИЗВЕСТЕН И ЛЮБИМ ОН ВО ВСЁМ МИРЕ И ОЧЕНЬ ДОЛЖЕН ПОМОГАТЬ ИМЕННО СЕЙЧАС ТО ПОНЯТЬ, ЧТО ОН ХОРОШО ПОНИМАЛ. СЛУШАЙТЕ.... ПОНИМАЕТЕ.... ДУМАЙТЕ.... РАЗРУШАТЬ ОЧЕНЬ ЛЕГКО.... И ЧТОБЫ ПОТОМ ЧТО-ТО ПОЛУЧИТЬ ЛУЧШЕЕ.... ОБЩЕСТВО И ЧТОБЫ РАЗБИРАТЬСЯ И ДЕЛАТЬ ВЫВОДЫ.... НУЖНО БЫТЬ ЛЮДЬМИ НАСТОЯЩИМИ....

    Bordering on the edge of Rachmaninoff.

      Вы молодец! Оркестр и дирижёр прекрасны! Как исполняют шестую! Без эт ого обычного грома и молнии , тихо и трагично, сам Пётр Ильич лучше продирижировать бы не смог! А к Кисину ещё не привыкла. У каждого музыканта своё понимание композиторов. Здесь и техника важна и, не менее того, очень тонкая чувствительная душа. Браво! Браво! браво! Кто дирижёр и чей оркестр - это не менее важно знать. Rachmaninoff, lo más selecto y emocional en música clásica, junto a Tchaikovsky, maestros plenos de genialidad, verdaderos embajadores de la cultura rusa. Siento una gran admiración por su hermoso talento y espiritualidad musical.

    It enhances this music to know how it came to be. Experiencing depression severe enough to make his 2nd piano concerto's composition unsatisfactory, Rachmaninoff underwent a series of hypnosis sessions during which the Russian psychiatrist Dr. Dahl kept repeating "You will write a wonderful concerto." The fact that during the many years I've listened to classical music radio stations I seem to remember hearing this more often than any other piece of music suggests that the hypnosis was successful. A haunting "reaching" sensation as some critics have described it...

    Listening to Sergei through this interpreter is a delight to abolish the surge of everyday noises and images to half-open the space of elsewhere where contingency and representation give way to the immateriality of the sensitive. The expressive power of the sound architecture breaks with any form of transcription of reality to attach itself to the expression of a fabulous universe where the color and the hythm of the compositions constitute an expiration which gives voice to the exaltation 🤠

    Mr Kissin is, as has been said several times here an elegant pianist, yet allows the tempestuous moments in this music their due. His playing is authentically, and unabashedly Russian, and especially in this case, letter perfect. Maestro Myung and orchestra obviously are in serious agreement, and the appreciation and affection expressed by the orchestra members is touching. Bravo all the way around.

      There is an earlier performance by Kissin of this concerto at the London Prom, must have been made about 20 years ago and his 2nd mov was always nice but in this he takes the emotional power to a whole new level with his slower tempo. Going from Chopin's 1st at 13 to this level of maturity in his 40's shows he's among the greats--a pianist's pianist.
